Rank USO winners of recent times according to their level

Cut off around 1995 .

Inspired by an old thread here. While FO,AO,WB have more clear answers for these, USO is pretty interesting.

The other 3 slams have clear rankings over the course of 25 years?

Not absolutely clear , chose wrong words , meant to say more clear and less controversial than that of USO.

Curious to see how people rank Djokovic's runs in comparison to Nadal and Federer's runs .

I still give 2015 Djokovic the edge, but if we talk strictly about the final, it's close.
It's not close. Close is if we compare 2010 Nadal with 2011 Djokovic, that could be a very good match. But in 2015 Djokovic struggled against Bautista and Lopez during the tournament and would have lost the final if Federer wasn't choking like crazy during 3 hours and a half. Oh yes, 2010 Nadal (who was playing on a very high level) would beat this version of Djokovic in 4 sets. I doubt peak Nadal would choke on every big point like a 34 years old Federer did.

7) Del Potro 2009
8) Agassi 1994*
8a) Sampras 1995
9) Nadal 2013
10) Federer 2008

*I realize the cut-off is 1995, otherwise i'd have Agassi '94 at #8.

You have some good points here so I can agree with Nadal 2010 being ahead of Djokovic 2015.

So, from your point of view, Federer 2011, who almost beat Djokovic, is ahead of Fed 2006 ?

1) Federer 2005 was the best I have seen (unforgettable Agassi match). But I believe the conditions back then used to be quite a bit faster, so it's hard to compare.

2) The Safin match against Pete was very impressive, yet for me it's more about classic vs. modern tennis.

3) Gotta respect Del Potro's monster match in 2009, he was on his way out when thunder struck. Awesome stuff.

The rest is more about Djokovic and Nadal. I liked Nole best in 2011 when he attacked more, but his best stuff is still at AO. Nadal was really impressive in 2013, serving better and adapting his tactics.

The worst was definitely Murray's 2012 win, even though I was happy for him to break through. What a weird match!

Not really, I'm going by their overall performance/level (throughout the whole tournament). That SF in 2011 was the only close match Djoko had, the rest were dominant displays. Not much in it between 2011 Djoker and 2006 Fed tbh.... we're cutting it fine here. I would rate 2011 Fed at USO = 2009, and very close behind 2008 and 2007.

To much Fed at the top for my liking.

Nearly all USO champs struggled at some point. That does not mean 2015 USO Djokovic was not very good.

I agree. 2015 Djokovic didn't have to play spectacular to win the 2015 final.

People are probably impressed with 2007 because Fed didn't drop a set against 3 straight top 5 players. Would not have happened post 2009.

Hard to rank a lot of these, I just know that I strongly disagree with pretty much all the lists I've seen so far.

IMO Djokovic's USO 2015 run is a bit overrated. Compared to Wimbledon it was a drop in form. Federer really missed a big chance.

LOL. Like he really had any. Federer should have gotten it to a 5th but there's no chance in hell that Djokovic won't grind him down and raise his level , like he did on every single important point.

Also, Federer's strategy wasn't sustainable point to point. There is a reason he blew up so many chances.

A drop in form from Wimbeldon but not by a huge huge margin and still a high level.
Most people just put that victory as Djokovic not playing good and not his play on a lot of big points and Federer having it on his racket.....

Because it's hard to rank them? That's what I said right...I don't know exactly how I'd rate them but I just know I don't agree with what I've seen so far.

Would prefer a tier system or something to roughly group all the different runs.

I do as a matter of fact :-D

I guess my problem is that great levels of play like some of Sampras, Rafter (1998), Safin and even Roddick and Hewitt don't get a look in.
I knew it :D
I think the title is confusing because it says recent times then talks about as far back as 1995. For me modern would be no further back than when Federer starting his dominance if not the last decade.

Even with his list I might switch out the bottom four with some others and maybe switch 5/6 as well. Not seen a lot of Sampras in 1995/1996, would probably put 1995 on par with 2005 Fed and maybe the last couple of rounds in 1996 should be flirting with the top 5? Been a while since I saw them.

So yeah, obviously I agree that Fed's runs are pretty much all the best of the last 15 years compared to the other Big 3 but I'm not without some pause for that as well.

How would you rank them?

Yep Safin was downright Monstrous in that final. Sampras said something along the lines of that he never saw his serve getting bludgeoned back like that.
One year later he was punished even harder by Hewitt though. And he would have experienced the same against the Big 3 on many occasions.

It was just a sign of changing times in tennis.

See, we will never know that. Maybe going up 2 sets to 1 would have been exactly the kind of push Fed needed.

Federer 2006
Federer 2005/ Federer 2007/ Nadal 2010
Djokovic 2011
Nadal 2013/Djokovic 2015
Del Potro 2009/Djokovic 2018
Cllic 2014/Nadal 2017
Nadal 2019
Murray 2012/Wawrinka 2016

Federer had high peaks in 04 and 08 but Federer did not hit gear until the late rounds in USO 2004 and in USO 2008 he had massive trouble with Andreev needing 5 sets. So not sure were to put it. Matchups will probably different as well in a H2H.

Wawrinka had lots of trouble in 2016 as well?

Would put Roddick and Hewitt at least on Murray 2012's level - Safin definitely over it.

Surely 2004/2008 Fed is over the latest two Nadal wins and 2018 Djokovic for me as well :p

I kinda think 2009 DelPo is overrated as well...

Oh yeah sorry 2004/2008 Federer was certainly above Wawrinka and Murray for sure i just did not know were to rank it among the top. I agree about the Nadal/Djokovic part. Peak level is probably near the top though. The SF+F was great in both.
I left out pre 2004 years most of my knowledge of pre 2003/2004 has come though learning about it and reading about it. I hear Safin 2000,Hewitt 2001 were very good as well.
Del Potro is like Wawrinka they get a lot of credit for high peaking but have some fortune due to the versions of the big 3 they face imo.

Yeah Del Potro was very good but Nads was injured in the SF and Fed turned in his worst serving performance and played like a fool lol. The less said about the disgrace that was the USO 2016 the better...

Fair enough about pre 2003 years, before my time as well - just seen the big matches on YT and checked the stats/scores.

Federer had so many chances in that match i think he was 2 points away from winning and he lead in the 2nd set as well i think? Weird how he served like crazy in 2 slam finals and poor in 2 others.... I feel the same about USO 16 i do not feel Djokovic was bad in the final vs Stan it was actually quite a competitive match.
A question about who was the best runner up or in-form player in these USOs who did not win would be interesting.....

Lemme venture a wild guess...

Rafa fans will prefer his wins, RF fans will prefer his, and Novak fans will prefer his.

You may as well just open a poll asking who is your favorite player.

Ridiculous posts so far.

what has everyone got against Sampras? So underrated it’s ridiculous.

1. Sampras 2002. He was unstoppable. Nothing would ever stop him. Mentally he was perfect. The Roddick quarter was a complete lesson.
2.Sampras 1995. Played mainly from the baseline in this tournament. Watch it if you haven’t already. Nobody could cope with his hitting. Prime Agassi had no chance.
