All these guys did epic inspirational stuff aged 35 at the AO. So let’s rank the runs:

Federer level was far superior to Nadal. We will have to wait how it goes for Novak. But from first round I got impression his level is comparable to Fed.

Federer defeated Berdych - Nishikori - Wawrinka - Nadal (all Top 10 players at that time). Who did Nadal beat ? Choking mugs like Shapo and Med ? Federer' fourth round opponet was far better than Nadal's final one Lol.

Ahhh its ok to call the number 2 seed a choking mug cos Nadal beat him. But lets not remember the narrative ,of how many times Nishikori became injured, or that Fed faced an unseeded opponent in the QF ( LOL ),or that Nadal had barely played for 6 months leading into that AO 17 .

Nadal defeated the number 2 seed, and number 7 seed in the last 2 rounds.

I think it stands up just as much as Federers 2017 win.

lol no. Fed hadn't played for even longer than Nadal in 2017 and was coming back from knee surgery to boot. There's absolutely no comparison between 2017 Fed and 2022 Nadal on a level of play basis either. Nadal from 2017 would have crushed his 2022 self and he lost to Federer. As for the rest of the draws none of Federer's opponents were choking messes either like Shapo or a lesser extent Med. Nadal's win was epic in it's own way but it doesn't stand up next to Federer's.

How can one highly rank a run that ends with R16?

(Oh well, I guess with Sir Andrew you have to take whatever you can get.)

Federer defeated fellow Big 3 and another former AO champion. End.

Even if Federer had a tougher draw (though hyping Berdych and Nishikori is not serious), it is surely not due to the BS reason this new user wrote. They both didn't face Djokovic. The reason of not facing him doesn't affect the difficulty.

Sure, Zverev the older was "a tremendous rival."

There were four top 10 players in his last five rounds. Federer got a let off in the QF but every other round from the R3 onwards was much tougher.
Remember that until the 2021 edition the Australian Open semifinals were played on different days and Federer had that privilege in 2017.
If they had already been played on the same day in that edition, Federer would not have become champion.
:D

If Fed wasn't nursing a groin injury he beats Nadal in straights like every other time they met that year

Federer was also lucky in 2017 , that he had no Djokovic to fight for titles.

Federer deserved to be lucky because he is already 5 years older than Nadal, at 35 this is a big deal, it is not a deal at 30, not at 31, but a big deal at 35. Plus Fed was already facing 4 top 10 seeds and potentially would have faced a 5th as well if Misha had not beaten Sir Andrew. So I would say, Federer deserved whatever luck he got in AO 17, it was a well deserved win. Novak was a part of the draw, he lost in second round for whatever reason but it is not the same as politics removing him from the draw in 2022. So Federer's win is 100% legit and strong win with or without facing Novak since Novak was in the draw and lost.

He still didn't have to face Djokovic. The reason of that doesn't affect the difficulty.

If Nadal hadn't choked, he would have beaten him like he always did in GS tournaments.
:p
Yeah thats why Nadal got his ass whooped in 3 later meetings that year. Federer 2017 was a nightmare for Nadal everywhere aside clay. He even decimated Nadal on IWs and miami where courts are slow as dead

Context is always important. Only reason why Novak fans always mention AO2022 is because of political interference which removed him from the draw, instead of that had he lost in 1st week to someone nobody would have ever mentioned about asterisks. Politics should have no place in our sport but injuries/shock defeats are a part of the game. If Novak loses next match then nobody has any moral right to question Tsitsipas/Rune if they win the title on Sunday.

That having said, yes a fit Novak would have 100% beaten Federer in 2017, but nevertheless it is an epic win, perhaps the most epic AO win I witnessed in last 20 years, even more epic than AO12 final despite much lower in quality/playing level. Epicness is epicness. Federer at 35.5 beating Nadal was a very special experience.

Cry hard...Nadal had a cakewalk draw facing Next Gen Chokers.

If you are discrediting Fed then are you agreeing to the fact that 2017 version Nadal is even worse than Medvedev.

Does best-of-three-set tournaments matter now, when Federer fans puffed up their chests by saying that the only important thing was Grand Slam events?

I'm just saying something clear and that you should admit: playing the semifinals of a GS tournament on different days is wrong but happily the organizers of the Australian Open (after more than two decades) they corrected that and since the last edition both matches are played on the same day, as it always should have been.

Federer 2017 > Nadal 2022 since politics didn't interfere with the tournament by banning the favourite.
I don’t understand why Djokovic fans keep bringing this up when it exposes the fact their hero exposed children and an elderly journalist to covid knowingly and without telling them.

Given Novak lost to Istomin, I’d say the chances are pretty good.
It doesn't always work this way, you know. In AO 2016 against Simon, Djokovic played worse than he did against Istomin, and we know how it ended. He was in decent form in Doha 2017, and had he survived the match against Istomin, he might have upped his level.

It doesn’t always work this way, true, but given Djokovic’s form in surrounding events, the Istomin loss is indicative of a large trend rather than a one-off like the Simon match. It’s possible he could have improved his level after the Istomin match, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Not at all. Nadal had barely played for 6 months, but what about Fed?

As good as Fed's 2017 AO was, it will not beat Nadal's 2009 AO and Djokovic's 2012 AO.
