One of the announcers on Tennis Channel said he initially started wearing it when he had some kind of rash and then got used to it. Now wears just because he likes the compression feel.

I have actually recently ordered one of these as I like the feel of compression on my arm while playing. I have slight forearm pains while playing and compression does ease it.

Basically this. Raonic started playing well earlier this year when he had it on, and now, kind of like vibration dampeners, he can't play without one. Superstition, really.

actaully i play with one sometimes, it helps provide support and really does (anecdotally) keep the arm from being as sore. Downsides are that with the extra compression arm does not move quite as freely (duh) and in central texas summer its too dang hot to wear a long sleeve. similair to us dorks who play with the calf sleeves as well.

It's a fashion statement. I sometimes wear two sleeves to prevent tanning. But if you do one arm only, it's pretty obvious.

I heard that too - supposedly a rash in reaction to a skin/sun cream, so he wore the sleeve to protect against the sun. Made me wonder why he only got it on one arm? Didn't sound like the announcers really knew for sure.

my elbow is jacked and these help a lot. Theyre not super tight compression like the therapeutic stuff in the medical section of a supermarket, but they provide enough compression to keep the elbow supported enough and give enough mobility to make them perfect for tennis.

I suppose some use them as a fashion thing, but for me it really does help. Even if it's only a bit, in a long hitting session it goes a long way.

As others have said, it'S just a habit. I believe the word he used to describe it is it's a blankie for him.

He must have a superb tan !

Sleeve = Latest and greatest in sport technology ?

I'd have to do a lit. search to find what level of evidence there is to support it, but I have read that the extra tactile feedback from wearing a compression sleeve can enhance proprioception over time (ability of the brain to sense where body parts are relative to each other). I noticed Kyrgios also uses athletic tape on his serving arm. Anyone else heard this as well?

Yep. Wearable security blanket. These pros and their ticks are amusing.

I guess when @The Ljubicic and Piatti ask for a raise, Milos can say "you are helping; but the sleeve is the real reason for my rise."

My guess would be he is using it for more reasons than placebo.

I did a quick lit search, it does seem compression garments (CG) have been researched quite a lot in recent years for their effects on performance, recovery and injury prevention... but there doesn't seem to be a review article yet in a reputable sports med journal saying just how much of an impact CG's have or don't have. I didn't look it up in reference to other sports, but I would think their increased use in sprinting, speed skating, golf, is more than placebo or marketing.

But dampeners do have a practical purpose, which is making your shots sound better. At least that's why I use them. Without it sounds like I hit with a fry pan or like I'm framing every shot (I probably do).

I meant the armband is similar to the dampener as in Raonic can't play without one because he's used to that on his arm.
