Milos Raonic was named Canadian Athlete of the Year by Sportsnet.
It has been a week of national accolades for Milos Raonic. Days after being named Tennis Canada’s male player of the year, the 22 year old has been crowned Sportsnet’s 2013 Canadian Athlete of the Year.
The award was announced on Thursday morning on Brady & Walker on Sportsnet 590 The FAN. Raonic’s win will be celebrated in a special half-hour interview with Stephen Brunt on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet East, Ontario, West, and Pacific.
“It’s a great feeling. There’s an aura around Canadian athletes,” said Raonic. “Whether it’s in the NBA, college sports, figure skating or [ice] hockey, there’s a bit more of a spotlight, and I think it’s special to be part of that and to receive this award for 2013 is an honour.”

Sportsnet’s 11th annual Athlete of the Year award was voted on by a panel of contributors from Sportsnet’s TV, radio, web and magazine platforms. Raonic’s achievements this season include reaching his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final on home soil at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal (l. to Nadal) and breaking Top 10 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. The Toronto native just missed out on a place in the elite eight-man field at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and also let Canada to the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time.
Raonic has also been nominated for the Lou Marsh Award, presented to Canada’s best athlete. The winner is chosen in December by a panel of journalists. He would be the first tennis player to win the award.
