The 32-year-old says he is not the type to sit around “waiting for time to pass” and once he was able to outpace with his university-level hitting partners, he planned one last summer hurrah: Wimbledon, his hometown tournament in Toronto and the US Open.
He wanted to play Queen’s too, but typically his body decided otherwise, a shoulder complaint reminding him why, in all likelihood, this mini-comeback is just delaying the inevitable.
“The one thing I know is that playing tennis since age of nine, you do one thing and you have a very singular objective, focus and passion throughout it,” Raonic says.
“And then the last two years, I got to do a lot of things and I got to find a lot of things I enjoy.
“For me, I’ve always wanted to be able to play and to be able to push. Can I do that? I don’t think so.”
