Why does rap have to be intelligent? Just wondering. I really wanted to like Common, but I'm not feeling him at all. Currently, in the playlist I use for running, it's Wu Tang, The Game, Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killa, DMX, Tupac, and even some reggaeton, Tony Touch. Used to listen to Canibus a lot, too, when I run. Greatest rapper of all time, Biggie Smalls of course. Got a lot of him. And tons of Eminem, 50 Cents, Beastie Boys, and Kool Keith.

In my music collection the only songs that are even remotely rap like are

Charli Baltimore - Money
Christina Aguilera (Lil'Kim mix) - Can't Hold Us Down
Outkast - Miss Jackson
Pras Michel (ODB & Mya mix) - Ghetto Supastar

I'm a music philistine so if any of the above are not raplike you know why I picked them.

I usually don't listen to rap for the "intelligence" factor. It's all about what sounds good, what's entertaining. Right now I'm liking the CRUNK...

Yeeaaayahhh!!!!

Tupac and B.I.G.
Eminem
Eyedea and Abilities
Talib Kweli
Common
Jay-Z (The older stuff up to the first Blueprint)

Right now I'm pretty into Eminem's The Re-Up and Jay Z's Kingdom Come, but I mostly listen to non rap genres. I like rap/hip-hop for parties and to get me pumped up for anything athletic.

NOTHING was funnier than that. EVER! I could watch that episode 1000 times.

I haven't listened to hip hop in so long....but my favorites are:

LL Cool J (shhh I'm a girl lol)
Busta Rhymes
Missy Elliot
Jay-Z
Biggie
Tupak
50 Cent

I hate to have to put 50 Cent on there but I love to dance and he has stuff can dance to all night.

I'm a big fan of...

Rakim
KRS-One
Nas
Talib Kweli
Mos Def
Lauryn Hill
Kanye West
Lupe Fiasco
dead prez
Tribe
De La Soul
Pharoahe Monch
Common,
etc.

I dig anything of that sort. I'm not a fan of most of the cra'p that passes as hip hop today.
BTW, why bring back such an OLD THREAD?

Intelligent rap, does such a thing exist? I'm a big fan of rap, but it doesn't have to be "intelligent" for me to listen to it.

The words rap and music do not go together, much less the word intelligent. Rap came from the inner city streets where most people are less educated, and the lyrics reflect that.
Why young, educated, and affluent kids sing along to racist. misogynistic, and violent words is beyond me even if it has a good beat.

If you want "intelligent rap", I would recommend the Lil Jon masterpiece "Put Yo Hood Up". A classic for all time.

If you think all hip hop is "racist, misgynistic and violent", you simply don't know what you're talking about.

LOL. Very funny.

The only thing I hate more than crappy commercial/mainstream rap are people that judge the entire genre by it. These people never actually know what goes into making a rap song. It's no easier than putting together a rock song. If you took time to analyze a verse from a great rap song, you'd realize how complex it is.

Rap music ***** Rock is for real men.
laugh.

--------------

Biggie (above all) and Tupac for obvious reasons, the backbone of the genre.
They never get old. I can listen to them for long

Dre, Eminem, Snoop, Ice Cube, Nate Dogg are all fine. I like them.

I also enjoy the recent/older music of Cypress Hill, Bone Thugs, Scarface, Nas, Busta Rhymes, XzibiT for sure ~

i enjoy obie trice (especially), Twista, Kanye West -- MID West represent

JayZ, Outkast, Tech N9NE, UGK, Kinfolk Jon all pretty decent, though not my favorites

The Game and 50 Cent are good, some songs are cr4p though.

Rick Ross, Lil Wanye, UNK, Three 6 can all be good, but some of their **** is whack

Young Joc is ok, Young Jeezy gay

I even enjoy Akon and T-Pain but only in small doses.

f*** a Fate Joe, E-40, Chamillionaire (Swisha House backstab) D4L, Ja Rule, Lil Whyte, MIMS, R. Kelly, Rich Boy, Baby Boy, Baby Huey, Hurricane Chris, Dem Franchize Boyz, Ying Yang, Young Buck, DJ khaled

you heard it here!

Educate yourself on the history of rap and hiphop music before posting this kind of ignorant drivel.

My current faves:

Tribe Called Quest
Atmosphere
High and Mighty
Nenah Cherry (that's right, I said it--that Michael Stipe duet about sex education in public schools? righteous!)
