Rap music

I have absolutely no problem with Rap as a form of music, but I cannot abide the grotesque, sexist, drivel that permeates the form.

Well why don't you post what you believe to be an honest history of "rap".
Because I suggested you educate yourself; I never volunteered to tutor you. ;)

For the record, I *do* think a lot of rap/hip-hop is misogynistic, sexist, racist, encouraging violence, etc., and for that reason there's a lot of hip-hop I can't stand. But you can't blame a form for its content. Besides, if you want to discredit or dismiss any artform or artistic influence whose pioneers have/had low socio-economic status, then you'll be tossing aside a good deal more than just rap. And can we really claim that rock/country/any popular music entirely avoids sexism? Nah.

this rap crap a lot of people talk about disliking and hip-hop music is 2 different things. you can't associate rap and hip-hop together as one element because like i said they are 2 very very different aspects of music.

the rap emcee speaks of the degradation of women and also getting money, biatches and cars. all that bling bling stuff you hear on the radio (which you shouldn't listen to because they spoon feed you bad music) is "rap crap".

the hip-hop emcee is a storyteller of sorts. he "spits" his rhyme to "uplift his peoples" like common says or to tell you a little about his/her life so that he/she as an artist can allow you to visualize his/her art form. also the hip-hop artist speaks about the problems of this day and age. his/her flows are laced with clever metaphors and similes, some so deep that you cannot even begin to understand unless you actually know this person.

i really don't like it when people who don't know much about hip-hop, as a culture and as an art form, associate it with rap crap. i understand that all music has contributed to sexism and racism at some time and such, but TRUE hip-hop does not, and will never do this. you will never hear real hip-hop artists degrade women because they realize that the female is what brought them into this world. you can clearly hear this if you listen to tupac, kanye, b.i.g., common, this list goes on.

i'm gonna stop before you guys/gals fall asleep reading my lecture HAHA.

That's not entirely true.
Tupac and BIG both have their fair of songs degrading women. You could argue that Kanye does as well. I'm not sure Common does.

A lot of rappers, and tupac in particular, tend to degrade women on one track and then criticise other rappers for degrading women in another.

Example:

And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman
And out game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
And..

Actually i decided not to show an example of tupac degrading women because it is too crude to show on the boards lol.

But you get the point.

Remember that rap (or MCing) itself is only a subsect of hip-hop culture itself. There's also turntablism, breaking, and graffiti. I *think* the primary

People who primarily listen to indie-core or "intelligent" hip-hop, in effect making a distinction between hip-hop and commercial/gangsta, are called backpackers.

Hey, what does everyone think of Juelz? I got his "What the games been missing" album and it's pretty good.

He's also got a album out with Weezy called "I cant Feel my Face" (I'm not sure if it's out already, or if its coming soon or whatever)

Just havent seen much about him here, any thoughts?

I agree with DraGoNoFfiR3. Please turn off the radio. Thats not even hiphop/rap. Its hipPOP. In the famous words of Dead Prez "Turn off the radio, turn off that bull****". If you want good hiphop, check the Rock the Bells lineup from this year. Most amazing experience of my life.

But other good hip hop:
Pigeon John
MF Doom
Heiro/Del (Mainly Del)
Felt (Murs and Slug)
Straight OG Wu Tang.
NaS
Pharcyde
Tribe Called Quest
The Roots
Black Star (Mos and Talib)

I would say Lupe, but after seeing him and Pigeon do a free show at UCI, I lost a lot of respect for him. He didn't even care whereas Pigeon John put his heart into it just like he did last time I saw him.

You're officially one of my favourite people on this board :D

What's your favourite song by them?

!<-_->!, I saw Jedi Mind Tricks in concert in Cleveland this year. Stoupe wasn't there though, and it was disappointing. Either way, I'm glad someone else mentioned them. I'm a big fan of Violent by Design.

I've kind of went away from rap, but I still listen to Binary Star every now and then, and Del and Hiero are still good.

A lot of people here aren't into 'real' hip-hop. Anyway, What do I know.

My favourite artists at the moment are Immortal technique ( every needs to listen to Dance with the Devil, it's amazing and has a great twist at the end http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M72zVuBNpEA thats the link.)

Also Im loving Bone thugs n Harmony too, the older stuff, though thier new stuff is okay in areas, like Flowmotion. Bizzy Bone does well on his own too, like 'Thugz cry' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR1eO1ryOjM and thats the link for that!

Enjoy.

there are rap artists that are about money, ice, b**ches and stuff but there are others...!

Check a quote like this:
"Kick facts in raps and curse with clarity, cuz what's a curse if language is immersed in vulgarity" Talib Kweli

or a nice track like this:

]

So you like to resurrect your own threads that are dead for over 3 months

I don't like mainstream rap. It's a bunch of garbage. However, I'm a HUGE fan of underground rap, here are a few rappers that I'm currently listening to:

~Common
~Talib Kweli
~The Roots
~Mos Def
~Funky DL
~CL Smooth
~Five Deez
~Substantial
~Lupe Fiasco
~J5

That's about it. Even though they aren't rappers, I suggest all fans of real rap check out Nujabes and Fat Jon. Both are producers and make beats. There's a bunch of stuff by both on Youtube, and it's some brilliant stuff.
