- Holy Grail of Secret Federer Matches -

This beauty, among some of the other Federer match highlights, are part of the Swiss Maestro's tennis' version of the lost city of Atlantis. The Island of Atlantis, the city that sank into the sea in one day and night. Deep down in the ocean, washed, buried and withered away, there lies legendary Federer's forgotten scintillating shotmaking, aching to be excavated.

With each portruding and luminescent windowpane of every hidden medieval building in Atlantis serving as a symbol for each Prime Federer shot yet to see the light of day, all I can say is this: The coming weeks we and others will finally shed the light of day on the rarest of Federer gems you've always wished you could one day witness for yourself.

We'll be dragging them out of obscurity once and for all! There will be no way back...

Interesting, nay, fascinating times are ahead of us!

Can I get a Hallelujah?!

So is the full match on TGM’s channel already deleted by the copyright watchdogs? Anyway, big thanks to both of you for your effort again and again and again.

To the match: I remember having watched it live back then and I think it was one of the very rare occasions when Federer played at the start of a tennis day (11:00 h).

I would rate 2004 and 2005 over 2007 but I did say it's top 3. I feel like he played a higher average level in 2004 and 2005 and felt like Safin pushed him to heights he didn't have to go to in 2007. I thought he played great in the Roddick match but didn't think Roddick played particularly well hitting only 11 winners for the match. Not everyone agrees with that and that's fine.
Safin was obviously much better than anyone he faced, but Agassi did not play well at all in the QF and Federer was still pretty sloppy in that match, albeit with amazing serving and shotmaking, so I don't think it was an issue of Safin. The R16, SF, F in 07 were three amazing performances imo, better than what he did before the Safin match in 05 (just looking at the R16 and QF since the first few rounds weren't against traditional opponents). Then again, if Federer had beaten Safin in 4 or had gotten that call in the 5th set and then got out there and given a very in form Hewitt a masterclass we'd probably all universally rate 05 the highest, so this is what makes any of this really tough.

I tend to go with 04 because I think he was the most dialed in there, and the last 3 sets vs Hewitt, whole match vs Ferrero, and the Safin match was just tremendous stuff. Also because it was the most fun to watch.

I'll say one thing about Fed's AO 2005 campaign that makes it truly special: Suzuki.....Suzuki! In my mind Federer's single greatest shotmaking performance of all time. When talking about Federer's showing in slams you gotta include the whole picture, so that also entails the earlier rounds. That being said, it's hard to bypass Federer's 2010 AO triumph. But the Suzuki one stands out for me and it always will be.

If only someone made a highlight reel of that spectacular encounter...oh wait! I totally made those highlights already :p

Funny how Fed fans think this court was fast. Australian Open today is much faster than this court. This would be 35-36 at best on court speed index.
AO was actually 36 medium on the court pace rating on the dot before the 2017-2018 additions. Slower than USO at 42 medium-fast.

The 2007 AO beatdown is overrated. Roddick was bad. If he had actually played decent, he would've made the score somewhat respectable, and the result would've been closer to 2009, when it was 75 75 62 (after Fed got the 63 60 60 QF vs Delpo)

They have. Roddick defeating 2018 Nadal or 2018 Djokovic to win Wimbledon? You can choose the blue pill to believe the Fed-Matrix Fantasy, or you can choose the red pill to see reality.

Don't discredit yourself by pretending peak Roddick was Wimbly 2006 or 2008 or whatever. Roddick was pretty inconsistent after 2005

Yea I thought he was terrible as well and seemed to be flat without much on his groundstrokes.

Even though Agassi didn't play his best in 05, he was still a 4 time champ and brings a different quality to a match like that. Federer handled him easily 3, 4, and 4. I didn't think an erratic and still green Djokovic, Robredo and a listless Roddick really put up much resistance. It was actually Gonzalez who played the best by far out of his opponents. I felt in 05, he got wrapped up in an epic dogfight that could have gone either way but he got the short end of the stick. He did not create that kind of shotmaking in 07 that he did in that 05 semi. So for me 05 > 07 but everyone sees these things differently.

Fantastic upload!

Why are you judging a slam level based on what he looked like in the early rounds where he was sleepwalking? Against opponents he got up for (Djokovic, Roddick, Gonzo) he produced masterclasses. I still have 04 AO as Fed's best AO run but 07 is clearly in the top 2 at worst and I don't really see anything about 05 that puts it over. He was pretty casual throughout the 05 run too, as he was in 07.

Just watched this set of highlights of Fed-Djoko in 2007 4R in high quality.

Federer Djokovic AO 2007 4R.

absolutely a masterclass from federer. ridiculous shotmaking+defense in there. should be talked about more tbh.

djoko himself was coming up with some pretty good shotmaking. Boy, could the aggressive younger version of djoko (07-08) be fun to watch.

Rebound Ace and Plexicushion play very differently.

Why should this match be talked about more and how you possibly think this particular version of Djoker was fun to watch compared to what he became later on? He was an erratic mess far away from his best. His stats were horrendous for his standards. It would just be safe to say Federer played well and leave it at that.

Why should this match be talked about more

because considering federer was playing pretty well in this match and the shotmaking, it isn't mentioned much.

the answer to your question is there in my post :

"djoko himself was coming up with some pretty good shotmaking. Boy, could the aggressive younger version of djoko (07-08) be fun to watch."

he went for his shots more that time. being fun to watch ! = being a better player.

djoko's stats are fine by his early 2007 standards (though not by his later standards at the AO). keep in mind, he was up against the best AO federer.

wasn't a great match from Djoko by any standards, but had some pretty good shotmaking from him. Watch the highlights video.

This is the real Peak Monster Fed. The ball striking, the movement, the all court aggressive tennis. Invincible. 2005-06 Federer was the greatest tennis player to ever step on a tennis court.

Thank you for posting this. It is incredible how much tennis improved over the years. Federer looked like a shadow of a player he is today. He had so many technical flows. Credit to Edberg and Ljubicic for being able address all technical problems.
