The ratings go by the players general/overall quality/effectiveness/success in the specific area being rated. Don't rate each area
on how they did in a specific match or tournament.
By the way, consistency refers to how often they are in the zone and how often they come on the court with their proper game (i.e not patchy).
I haven't added fitness/physical strength because I wouldn't know enough to rate. Feel free to add any more areas to rate.
I've started with a few here...

Also, I don't think anyone has a backhand worthy of a 10. No one has a backhand in the same category as Federer's forehand for example (IMO).
Lol no, I disagreed with a lot of it but that one just stood out.
On average, maybe not, though Roddick's CAN be better. Yeah, make them both 8. Nadal's just works really well vs Fed
People are being too generous btw, and footwork and speed are NOT the same
Federer
Forehand - 10
Backhand - 8.5 (Only fully exploited on clay tournaments against Nadal or someone of similar play style, Andreev maybe)
Serve - 9
Slice - 9
Volley - 7 (Have seen rough times as of late)
Return - 8
Speed- 8
Footwork- 10
Mental Strength - 8
Consistency - 9
Nadal
Forehand - 8
Backhand - 9
Serve - 7
Slice - 8
Volley - 8 (Vastly overrated on these boards but otherwise underrated when referring to his skill, hardly approaches the net and often does so out of necessity. Otherwise a competent volleyer that gets the job done)
Return - 9
Speed - 10
Footwork - 8
Mental Strength - 9
Consistency - 10
Roddick
Forehand - 8.5
Backhand - 7.5
Serve - 10
Slice - 7 (Does it way too much, consistent, but otherwise leaves him open to attack sometimes)
Volley - 8 (Sucks a little less than it did 3 years ago but still not anything great)
Return - 6 (50 aces by Fed at the Wimby final, nuff' said)
Speed - 8 Has some good raw speed
Footwork - (7 But doesn't have the footwork to complement speed)
Mental Strength - 9
Consistency - 8
Murray
Forehand - 8
Backhand - 10
Serve - 6 (Deplorable first serve percentages and accompanied by 60 mph second serves that gets eaten up by any capable returner)
Slice - 9
Volley - 8
Return - 10
Speed - 9
footwork - 9
Mental Strength - 7 (Decent mental strength but breaks rank and starts smashing rackets at the sight of defeat)
Consistency - 8
Del Potro
Forehand - 9.5 (A marvel of pure pace and placement, all round a great stroke)
Backhand - 9
Serve - 9
Slice - 8
Volley - 8
Return - 8
Speed - 8 (Fast for his frame and height)
footwork - 6 (But lacks the proper foot work at times, especially when approaching the net, looking scared and often times, confused)
Mental Strength - 9
Consistency - 8
Djokovic
Forehand - 9
Backhand - 8
Serve - 7 (Terrible service motion that supplanted his old, reliable serve)
Slice - 9
Volley - 9
Return - 9
Speed - 9 (Perfect combination of speed and footwork)
Footwork - 10
Mental Strength - 7 (Headcase as of late)

wow,what a lame comeback line:neutral:
Wow, what a lame post...? If you fail to comprehend the meaning behind my post...
a) maybe, like Bud( who as some genius poster has previously stated, Bud is the biggest idiot around and nobody tops him) you should get a brain and b) investing in some reading comprehension and logical thinking classes may do you good.
Haha.
Hahahahahahah.
Hahahahahahahhahhahahahahahahahahhahaha!!
Go get a brain, sometime.
if I fail to comprehend the meaning behind your post
hmm...
nope I understand it
it's a lame "George Costanza" comeback line
"Well the jerk store called and they're running out of you!" hahaha
Go GASQUET!!!

it's a lame "George Costanza" comeback line
I only included guys from the top 10:
Federer
Forehand - 10 (It deserves an 8 now, but if we are counting overall career, it's 10)
Backhand - 8.5 (Huge slice, great angles and passing shots, not a great rally shot)
Serve - 10 (While hasn't served that well in 2010, proven in slams that it's the serve which wins or losses him matches. Federer is the best clutch server on tour, which makes his serving the best serving, even if there are more powerful serves out there)
Slice - 10
Volley - 8
Return - 7
Speed/footwork - 9
Mental Strength - 8
Consistency - 8 (10 at slams, 6 at other events)
Nadal
Forehand - 10 (Best FH on tour today)
Backhand - 8.5 (consistent, great passing shots on the run, can't hit it DTL almost at all, slice lands short and to the middle)
Serve - 7 (consistent but very attackable)
Slice - 6
Volley - 7.5
Return - 9
Speed/footwork - 9.5 (Not as fast as in 2005 but still the fastest out there)
Mental Strength - 10
Consistency - 9 (great at MS events, usually very consistent at slams as well)
Roddick
Forehand - 8 (loopy)
Backhand - 8 (underrated)
Serve - 9.5 (Roddick's serve is huge, but I think there are player who are better clutch servers and have better accuracy)
Slice - 9 (pretty good actually)
Volley - 8
Return - 7
Speed/footwork - 9 (improved over the last two years)
Mental Strength - 9.5
Consistency - 8 (pretty consistent, but where is the clay?)
Murray
Forehand - 7 (big weakness for Murray, good CC passing shots though)
Backhand - 10 (best today)
Serve - 7 (low 1st serve % most of the time)
Slice - 9
Volley - 8
Return - 9
Speed/footwork - 9.5
Mental Strength - 8.5
Consistency - 8.5
Del Potro
Forehand - 10 (Best today along with Nadal's)
Backhand - 9
Serve - 9
Slice - 6
Volley - 7
Return - 8
Speed/footwork - 8
Mental Strength - 9.5
Consistency - 7 (Not in the big consistency league yet)
Djokovic
Forehand - 8 (Quite a weakness, but works well at times)
Backhand - 10 (brilliant)
Serve - 8 (good 1st serve, but too many DFs at the wrong moments)
Slice - 6 (awful)
Volley - 8
Return - 9
Speed/footwork - 9.5
Mental Strength - 8.5
Consistency - 7.5
Davydenko
Forehand - 8.5
Backhand - 10 (along with Djoko and Murray, the best out there today)
Serve - 8.5
Slice - 7
Volley - 7.5 (good drop volleys, not much else)
Return - 9.5 (excellent)
Speed/footwork - 9.5
Mental Strength - 8 (lets him down in the slams)
Consistency - 8.5

now we could play this stupid game all night long believe me
Djokovic and roddick with more mental strength than Federer?
what exactly is your definition of mental strength? Federer is definitely 9.5+...
Typo, I meant 9. Federer gets a 9 in the mental department since he's very strong yet against some players he just fades away, plus he used to have the ability to pick up his game when playing badly and steal the win. Lately, he seems to have lost that ability.
He just doesn't care anywhere near as much in non-slams as he does in slams. If he wanted to he could, but it would probably be way too much and would drain him if he played every tournament like he does in slams.
Federer faded away in the 5th set against Del Potro maybe, but overall Del Potty simply outplayed him IMO.Maybe, but the fact remains, even at slams against Nadal he fades away when it matters. In the USO against DP he faded away. Both times he stopped playing in the 5th set and entered unforced-error mode. However, at AO 2010 Fed proved that the clutch server in him is back, which is why he got a 10 in the serve separtment from me. Last year at RG he served 4 aces in the 2nd set TB against Soderling, never letting Robin get even a look at the ball. If Fed can do that again this year, he'll be 9.5 or even 10 mentally. But right now, it's hard to give him more than a 9 given all his failures against Baggy, Berdych, and Gulbis (in all I think he had MPs).
Roddick is only weak mentally against Fed. Otherwise he has a great fighting spirit and usually doesn't choke. His tennis abilities are more limited than Fed's or Nadal's, which is why he's ranked lower.
Federer faded away in the 5th set against Del Potro maybe, but overall Del Potty simply outplayed him IMO.
I agree, but Fed should have never lost that 2nd set. And against Nadal at the AO I think Fed clearly outplayed Nadal in the first four sets, and faded awawy mentally in the 5th. That match should have never gone to a 5th, I think Fed should have own it in straights or maybe 4.

that's absurd, if he outplayed him he would have won
I agree about the 5th set though
