Reaction To Tennis Channel Showing Pickleball Instead of the WTA Citi Open Final

Heck not even talking about pickle ball. I’m not sure there is a sport that’s harder to find on us television now than tennis. Seriously. You can watch every German soccer league game easier than you can watch tennis now on us television.

That's incredibly sad. Pickleball is a scourge on the world of tennis and I have no respect for anyone under the age of 65 who plays it.
True, It's not really for people under the age of 50.

Anyone over 50 and beyond, it makes sense.

Seems likely... did ESPN or some other channel pick it up? If TC had the rights and chose to broadcast pickleball instead then that is truly depressing.
Tennis could be heading for a bad phase in a few years, post BIG 2 era.
A lot of fans will be lost especially if new talent doesn't showcase consistent high quality of tennis.

People will simply lose interest and will watch other sports.

It's airing on TC Plus, some regional sports networks, and T2 (Tennis Channel's network that only broadcasts on Samsung TV Plus).

Where I live the pickle ball players are trying to get the city to make tennis courts pickle ball courts. I heard that a tennis group that has a contract with the cit, was doing a kids clinic when a bunch of pickle ball players tried to take over the courts. Cops were called and pickle ball players removed. Crazy.

Tennis people say we got these courts built and have maintrained the courts as agreed by the city. Get the city to build your own courts. The pickle ball players say our sport is growing and we pay taxes.

That's just wrong... A WTA Final getting overlooked for pickleball. WTH??? I don't have TC but I subscribed to TC Plus but even then I'm baffled by their programming.

Sounds like the San Diego incident that happened recently. Except the story has been twisted. Tennis group had an expired license. Courts were empty when the pickleball players started. The city council had given the P ball players the go-ahead to use the public courts. The kids clinic showed up some time later. Police called but determined that the P ball players had a right to remain. It did not appear that the Pb players were using the same courts that the kids clinic was.

Man the female cop's facial expression in the thumbnail pretty much says it all.

I only played pickleball for the first time last week. It is actually pretty fun to play but it is pretty boring to watch. It's a sport made to be very easy to play, meaning no great technique nor athleticism is required, which in turn makes it uninteresting to watch. Players basically try to reach the net, play little ping pong shots until someone hits it slightly too high at which point someone else tries to and usually succeeds in putting the ball away. Rinse and repeat.

I played one time a couple of years ago. And then a 2nd time a couple of months ago. Not really for me. Would rather play ping pong

Yes, that is why I dropped TC. Too bad ... it's all about $$$$...

Tennis demands fitness and patient skill acquisition - two concepts that are not popular in the US..

PB is social, easy skills and very little movement. And better yet, you can purchase athletic clothing and gear and pose "athletic."
And, you can then generate large online social groups and take those tennis courts - very predatory attitude - with a smile...
Deep pockets demographic...

Big surprise, TC - it's all about $$$$$

Doubs. Most ppl do. Best players there were ex-collegiate tennis players in their 30s.

Not a huge fan of the ball used for Pb. Noisy and hard on my lower back cuz it only bounces ~ 3/4 the height of a tennis ball.
It's honestly better as singles. Agree with the noise. It's really inferior to tennis for people who have some semblance of normal mobility.

Tried playing pickleball once: fvcks up your tennis game bc of the weird bounces from the plastic ball and short paddle.

Our city changed out one of the tennis courts to pickle. The local high school added pickle lines on 2 of the tennis courts bc they play during PE (the kids don't play tennis anymore).

It will be an Olympic sport soon!?

TC coverage is abysmal. Every time I turn it on it’s a lower ranked wta match or a replay of a match even though the live matches are on lol what a joke

It takes more than skill acquisition / practice. It takes some semblance of athleticism than many ppl simply don't have. Many are just interested in getting exercise and having some fun.

Yeah, if I had my mobility, I'd still be playing tennis and badminton. I can still cover most of a PP table tho.

I noticed the ladies-Citi-final was on the Tennis Channels other station, via Samsung TV Plus, called T2. it really should have been the around IMO, as I think there are still more people interested in watching professional tennis over pickelball.

Hopefully, the producers of the station will see this feedback.

:-D

Like I said in the other thread, last time I turned on TC and pb was on there was a former tennis player who had been playing pb for 8 months and she BEAT the #1 pb'er in the WORLD.

8 months of experience for a tennis washout to beat the best pickle-tickler in the world!

I wonder if a pickleballer could switch to tennis and in 8 months beat Joker...:-D

Perhaps TC is more interested in promoting TC+ and T2 than the regular TC programming.

If they see it they won’t care. TC doesn’t care about airing tennis. What they care about is squeezing more money out of subscribers. This is just another example of a long list of BS TC has pulled to try to force people to buy TC Plus.
TC used to be on youtubeTV. Then they pulled out so you would have to subscribe to TC separately.

I get TC2 for free on Samsung TV. I pay for tennistv, which is worth it for doubles and on-demand matches at any non-GS tournament. I would never pay for TC, though.

Is covering in TT more difficult than PB? This is serious question because I am terrible at TT and do not understand that game at all. I only know from watching high level play in f.e. the Olympics that it seems like the table is more of a landing platform than it is what players are supposed to be near which meshes with your description of being able to cover only most of it while still being capable of playing PB.

This right here. Ive literally had to stream 90% of matches for the past decade and a half, its virtuall impossible to find on tv.
