Reading all the Djokovic related pandemonium on TTW

The flu comparison has been dispelled so many times yet people don't want to believe.
Only today I saw figures that the NHS (UK medical system) estimate that 45% of those who had the virus badly enough to be hospitalized will need ongoing care. Others who weren't hospitalized are finding they're still having symptoms now - how many people feel the effects of flu three months after having it?

I don't know why people want to tell themselves these lies.

I think it was a dumb call to have the tournament, and I cringed when I saw them all over each other, but I think people are going a bit overboard here. Hopefully many lessons can be learned here...

I live in Belgrade and practice no social distancing (or any other measure), like vast majority of people here. There are no measures dictated by the government for months. Everyone is buying fruit and vegetables in the open markets, where most people don't use any protective equipment. If C19 was highly contagious and deadly, we'd be in one hell of a problem. But it's a cold/flu like infection at worst, so it's all a farce.
in other countries it's really killing people. not even the Russians or Vikings can resist.
in the Balkans (ex-Yugo), from my experience, the elderly are very fit. they are not getting as fat and lazy as people elsewhere. (Bulgaria is already borderline.)

The entire world is trashing Djokovic right now. My local sports talk radio station even learned how to properly pronounce his name just so they could properly lay into him. At least on this forum we knew about how scummy a person he was before this.

"Scummy" hahahaha

Funny how you have no problem bashing Djokovic for real or imagined transgressions, but you are quick to dismiss any criticism of Serena Williams as the result of prejudice and bias

Even a lot of the criticism of Djokovic is a result of prejudice, but that's not a problem for him in his native Serbia.

It's incredible how much of it is rooted in prejudice, and then when I point that out, they say "hurr durr didn't realize Serbian was a race!"

People seem stuck on the pre-second world war definition of race which is given in most dictionaries. This should be referred to as 'archaic' to set people right.

He deserves a lot of criticism for this, to be honest. Sure, many of the people he interacted with are at low risk, but if they end up having the virus and returning to their older relatives (think parents or grandparents), it won’t look great.

The fact is that this is an enormously talented athlete who is unfortunately not terribly bright. For the record, I don't think that Fed is Einstein either. Nadal, for all his English difficulties, may be the smartest of the Big 3 - but I'm in no way sure about that.

Probably not stupid, I don’t think. Just extremely ignorant. Although the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

People like Djokovic who are convinced about alternatives to modern science and medicine tend to be zealots, so I doubt that a philanderer like Dimitrov would organise an event like this.

And then you have the economic zealots for whom opening the economy is the mantra, but people are not flocking back to travel in the same numbers so you average citizen is not stupid.

I thought Djokovic was silly but sympathized him for contracting virus. However, after the rubbish his dad said about Fed, "Why do you think he is still playing at 40? Imagine that, a 40-year-old man still playing tennis, when he could go home and do some more interesting things. But since both Nadal and Novak are breathing down his neck, he simply cannot accept the fact that they will be better than him. Go man, raise children, do something else, go and ski, do something", I think his son, Novak, deserves all the criticism just for his father's silly comments.

Nah, he's just Tony's puppet, no thinking of his own. Hard to be controversial when everything you say is scripted. Remember when they let him off the hook and he made all those butthurt comments about dumb NK? That's the real Ned. Probably got spanked by Tio after that. Fed and him are just PR robots, don't expect any honest answers coming from those camps. Djoki screwed up, yes, but it's pretty obvious how everyone is always hiding in the bushes waiting for him to fall to kick him while he's down.

I'd pay to mind to Novak's parents, we already know they're loonies.

Banning him is a stupid idea. He broke no law he violated non of the drug rules he just organized an event. Want to look at MLB and NFL and for that matter NBA. Its all about the Bens not the players. USA = pure greed

Novak should face a 1 year ban from the ATP and ITF for being so irresponsible.
and spanked by you in public and then obliged to make a harakiri to wash away the shame.

wake up to real life.
He didn't break any law in the countries where events were organized.
He didn't force anyone to go there by pointing a loaded gun or something.

If everyone who makes you a stupid offer should face such consequence, you'd have no buddies / pals.

Grow up, start consider about consequences of your choice and take responsibility, don't push it 100% to a celebrity like Novak. He is not guilty for your choices.

Djokovic as a leader has demonstrated incredibly poor judgement, and his family promptly blamed Dimitrov and then played the persecution card!

And the whole tournament was, in effect, an attempt by him to prove his worldview was the right one. He ended up, of course, with egg all over his face.

That’s strange, I thought his motive was to endorse a tennis tournament for the benefit of fans and charity.

Toni and Rafa are known for arguing with each other, so Rafa is no puppet.
And you can see Rafa is a very competitive person, he's confrontational with reporters, and usually people are more polite to reporters than they are to family members.
BTW, Rafa fired Toni.

NHS also says that people who have got COVID will most likely develop Alzheimer. There are no evidence such thing can happen for the virus is out for less than a year, and Alzheimer needs years and years to progress, but people should be scared now already.

370 alleged deaths from covid in Serbia and Croatia combined in how many months now? How does that warrant any measures and halting of normal life (including tennis)?

Remember when we were doing this to not "overwhelm" the hospitals? What's the plan now? Sit and wait forever because...
One possibility is that Dmitrov brought it into the tournament from outside Serbia/Croatia.

We have no confirmation that Dmitrov tested himself upon arrival. Required? No. But it is still irresponsible not to do it... And then we have a visibly ill Dmitrov
playing Coric and hugging him ..followed by Coric getting infected.

The only semi-legitimate blame is that the authorities in the Balkans were complacent. Even then its difficult to blame them given the very low incidence of the virus. If somebody wanted to go there and watch they knew the risks as did the players.

Djokovic and co have put themselves into a position where they will be the targets of criticism but some people on this forum historically do not like Djokovic mainly in my view because he poses a threat to two other tennis players' slam counts, so it's a double pile on.

Talking of Social Distancing, @Hitman these are pictures from Britain, if a second wave of Coronavirus breaks out then these people won't take the blame, this is clear flouting of the 1m social distancing rules.

he did demonstrate a poor judgement, but this doesn't mean that 100% of the blame is on hims, while all other top players are excused from blame.
and all the people that decided to come to the stands without masks, gloves as well have their fair share of guilt.

Dude the hypocrisy in the world now is at its highest peak ever.

It's possible that:
The Serbian government is to blame for playing down the virus and its transmission and not considering stricter policies re the holding of events on an international level in light of different international infection rates and responses.
Djokovic is to blame for his role in organising the event and displaying an inappropriate level of critical thinking as to the government's policy and the potential consequences of inviting guests from abroad.
Others involved in organising the event take blame for not challenging Djokovic on his push to hold an international event during an international crisis and not following any social distancing.
The individual competitors are to blame for their own decision to attend the event and potentially transmit or contract the virus and for failing to appropriately evaluate their own risk factor in light of recent travel.
Attendees are to blame for their own decision to attend the event in light of the potential risks.

On different levels, different people share the blame.

What is most laughable in all this is why some people are so outraged Djokovic should take any blame at all.

Those pictures aren't particularly representative of Great Britain, at large.

I was at a park yesterday, and everyone was diligently picnicking and sunning themselves well over 2 metres apart.

Dude you think you going to the market is comparable to holding an event drawing players from around the world and gathering crowds who literally sit next to each other?

The flu comparison has been dispelled so many times yet people don't want to believe. And what about the fatality rate of the elderly? Surely you won't care because it's not your grandparents who are infected.

Djokovic isn't evil for letting it go ahead and pretending nothing would happen as long as he followed the rules, but he sure as hell wasn't responsible.
I'm so sorry for all you people who believe in this BS. The reason elderly and seriously sick people are almost exclusive victims of the virus is because no one is actually dying from the virus, they die of old age and their serious conditions (vascular/heart diseases, cancers, obesity, etc), but are counted among covid victims because they are positive at the time of death. People also die because they are not treated for what actually ails them but instead intubated and given drugs they at best don't need or at worst outright harm/kill them. People die because of 24/7 broadcast of fear, stress and lockdowns. Unnecessary invasive intubations kill people but for some reason every patient on this protocol earns the hospital 49.000 $ (and people still can't put 2 and 2 together). Elderly are ideal "victims" for the fake pandemic in this sense. Couple it with a virus test that is highly unreliable (even random fruit can be positive LMAO), which shows false positive results for plethora of conditions (flu, lung cancer, lung inflammations, any other coronavirus, smoking, vaping, etc)

Comparison with flu is dispelled? Hmm, flu is actually dangerous for children and without media trumpeted neon light body count silently kills 600.000 to over a million every year. Tuberculosis for which there is allegedly helpful vaccine kills 1,5 million every year. And yet actually thinking about it is too heavy task for most... Dispelled - no, it's just that you're all under a media spell. Sad beyond words.

Ability in other languages is an ability. It doesn't make someone intelligent, any more than any ability in any area by itself makes someone intelligent.
True but as a guy who only speak one language (English), I always give credit to those who can speak another fluently or possibly can even converse in another language....I’d love if my Spanish (or another language) was as good as Rafa’s! I suppose my point is I wouldn’t be giving out to anyone who makes an effort to speak in their non native language!

I didn't watch the match between Coric and Dimitrov but how sick was Dimitrov? He won the match, right? Hard to belive he's seriously sick then. And how do we know what he was sick from. Given how the covid test works, Dimitrov could've had any common cold virus or a flu (or nothing) and still tested positive for covid. Actually, because this event went against covid tyranny, it might as well be sabotaged on purpose.

There are 370 deaths in Serbia and Croatia combined for 5-6 months. That's a non-issue. Let that sink in and wonder why medically vastly superior nations have such high body count. It makes zero sense.

You might also want to take a peek at this article, which shows COVID now spreading among young people:

Victims as the people who actually die. If covid is an respiratory infection it's completely normal that it spreads among people indiscriminately. That's how respiratory infections come and go every year, but for some reason this is "special"... Go figure.

If you say to the kids, and to the athletes, what should not be done would be to spend a few words. You put the video of Djokovic dancing under the neons and that's it. Then you open the newspaper and say: "Look read, this is what happens, infected in exorbitant amounts." How easy it is to forget. A friend who works in a hospital tells me while we see people in a bar hugging each other: "If they had seen how terrible this **** is, they wouldn't risk it that way." Some think they are bullets that only kill older people. They feel safe. They don't care if they become the nails of death. What was that tennis genius thinking, that ignorant of life, that selfish, who said above doing it with a pure heart and the best intentions. What world have you lived in these last months!

Serbia did something right at the beginning of the pandemic, with help from China. The video shows the Serbian president meeting a team of medical experts from China at the airport, and kissing the Chinese flag. It is good for Serbia but the pandemic is not over for Serbia since it is not over elsewhere in the world.

I don't think being cocky about Covid will do Serbia any good. None of the Chinese experts would have approved what Novak and his pals did.
