Poor old Mrs Wood at Boulogne has to cope with the return of the rainy weather that has plagued the British season. She is also missing her defending champion, Charles Lacy Sweet. However she does have a new ladies’ event or two, a whole clan of Arbuthnot sisters to fill the draw and, most importantly, Roy and Charlie Allen to attract the gate.
Unfortunately, as is their wont, once both of the twins reach the final, Charlie withdraws in favour of his brother, depriving the tournament of its main finale. However, the ladies step gamely into the breach and Miss M Arbuthnot takes victory after an exciting three setter.
Mrs Wood has further reason to gnash les dents when the Allens withdraw mid-event from the doubles, as they have a boat to catch back to England. Zut alors, indeed!
