Reasons why Novak is disliked in NY:

  1. Doesn’t want to mandate vaccines
  2. Adria Covid tour while NY was in lockdown watching in disbelief
  3. People misinterpreted his pressure is a privilege comments
  4. Broke his racket at Olympics and came across petulant
  5. DQ from US Open last year for hitting linesperson with the ball in negligent anger
  6. Roddick controversy long ago
  7. Might break Federer’s majors record
  8. Hasn’t won here all that much comparatively
  9. Overall started out with a poor reputation due to his fitness level and retirements
  10. NY generally prefers underdogs unless it’s a very special figure. Note Del Potro had the crowd support in 2009 and Agassi in the early 2000s match vs Fed.
NYC crowd is a loser which couldn't Stand this guy beating Roger so often. Done and dusted.

Djokfans frankly don't care. To us, it just shows his incomparable courage and indominable spirit.

Most athletes would shrivel under that group pressure and touting, he thrives instead. In a team sport, even if the audience target one player, his teammates will give support. And in team sports, the spectators are further away from the playing field, instead of being on top of you as in tennis.

Funny. I have always thought that as well. But never heard anyone else say it. And everytime I suggested that to may mates in the tennis playing fraternity, they would all disagree.

Djokovic was "All Class" last night against Rune. He pretty much tanked the 2nd last game of the match so Rune would not walk off the court with a 0-6 Final Set score.

I cannot imagine Rafa ever doing that. I imagine Roger might do it under some circumstances. But Novak looked like he was going to do something like that at some point during the 4th Set once it was obvious Rune was done. Rune won the first two points of the game on merit. And then Novak basically gifted him the next two points knowing he himself was easily going to serve out the match in the next game ... which he proceeded to do.

Great effort by Rune to even complete the match given his condition. It could have been a sour memory but thanks to his persistence and Novak's kind gesture it will be a good one for him and spur him onto greater heights. Pity a lot of the lunkheads in the crowd didn't seem to pick up on Novak's gesture.

And I don't think the crowd were booing at the end of the match. It sounded like the were chanting "RUNE!!!!" to give the young fellow some encouragement.
I could be wrong but seemed like folks were heckling him during his post match interview?
felt like nd was uncomfortably ignoring them

does anyone know the condition of the lines judge from last year? hope she's out of the coma.
It occurred to me that she is like cats. So she has 7 lives so I do not imagine that she cares if she wastes one as the purpose is sacred. Do not allow Nole to win.

LOL at the last sentence. I guess you’ve never seen an NBA game live. If you ever do, it’s advised to not wear any gear you consider precious:

It's always someone else's fault, isn't it?

Imbeciles, glory chasers...

A man who has followed tennis since the '50s has the vocabulary of 14 year old fanboys.
It's not someone else's fault. The imbeciles who don't know how to behave at a tennis tournament are responsible for their own behaviour.

stringer, in basketball, abuse is rarely directed toward only one individual on a team. And he can talk and interact with teammates, and coaches, and what have you. Djokovic has to deal with the abuse, all by himself, in silence, he has no one to talk to.

No it is not and you know it . It is the consequence of the constant victories against Federer and Nadal and the fact that he is now the best of all time and the Goat something that has caused mass hysteria, especially in U.S.
I absolutely don't know that.

Djokovic insulted the USO crowd back in 2008. They didn't like it one bit. Last year he hit a ball in the throat of Karen. Crowds tend to dislike those types of things and it sticks.

Djokovic should insult all USO crowd again and hope some anti Djokovic ttw members are in the crowd as well to get insulted.

Nothing that happened last night was "abuse." Yeah, cheering double faults is out of line but for the most part, people just want to get their money's worth and see the unexpected. I understand that Djokostans and all of Serbia wanted a triple bagel, but if you paid $100+ for a ticket you would have wanted an exciting, close match and they were trying to pick up Rune to get that. FWIW, in person, I would have rather watched the Fritz-de Minauer match. I'll take a close match between two "lesser" players over watching an ATG thrash a qualifier.

It's never a problem when Federer is playing. All these reasons are bs.

The conflict between "craving love" and "showing them" is interesting 8-B

I think in all honesty it is a little strange to believe your behaviour doesn't affect they way you are treated back.

What is this craving love bit? Novak deserves the appriciation, he shouldn't crave anything. If he doesn't, then it's great to show them. I love when he beats Roger time after time. Hope Roger returns back to get few more L before he retires. That's the best way to get back to people.

I don't think there is much bad blood between Roger and Novak anymore. I think they respect each other very much. Sad they didn't meet more when both were in top shape, but that's what 6 years difference does. It's a very good match up, mostly high level.

The only one Nole offended was Roddick. Nobody else . Unless you consider the response he gave an insult that he knows the public dislikes him .
The point is not that you do not know this. The thing is, you do not admit it . Admit it and move on .

Just for fun, here's the incident in 2008. As you can see, Novak tries to turn the crowd against himself, while the interviewer says "no, it was just Andy". But I know some of you love Novak's martyr ways and it's become a part of the tale I guess.

I always thought that New Yorkers disliked him because he was too much like them. Nadal, and particularly Federer, were aspirational.

He's stubborn, strongly opinionated, somewhat impatient and temperamental. These are probably just big city attitudes, but they apply to Djokovic more than the other two.

Great points, both of you. I actually never thought about it but Djokovic is somewhat similar to a New Yorker, minus the accent and the rudeness. Like I wouldn't expect Djokovic to not say "sorry" or "excuse me" when he bumps into me walking down the street but it happened multiple times to me from random people there. Personality and temperament wise, they are very similar.

Reasons why Novak is disliked in NY: . .
Except that nobody needs a "reason" to dislike someone or something. Feelings are totally arbitrary and subjective. Oftentimes, they aren't fact-based or reason-based.

What is boggling is that the Djokovic fan base demands he be liked, adored even . . . simply because he's the GOAT. That's just not how liking people works.

Lol. If you can't like him don't boo him. It's not so hard to understand. Don't play innocent

Stop telling lies, Novak trash talk back Roddick on the court after he beat him. Crowd booed him on the court .After Roddick attacked him physically in the locker room and he didn't get any suspension.

Don't talk hypothetical. What I know is if some one insults me, I would go out of my way to insult them.
What's hypothetical about what I asked? Surely, there must be someone in the real world who doesn't like you? We all have enemies and people who don't like us. It's insanity that we can dictate to those people what they can and cannot say or do to us. People can do as they please, and take the consequences.

This notion of yours that "If you can't like him don't boo him" . . . that fans shouldn't even be allowed to voice their displeasure with Novak, valid or not, is that kind of TTW bizzaro-world stuff that boggles the mind. And why I think that fanboys aren't true 'fans' of sport.

Imagine Real Madrid fans saying they can't be booed.
Imagine New York Yankees fans saying they need to be loved by all.
Imagine Lakers fans insisting that even Celtic fans must respect them . . .

Djokovic fanboys want what no other sports fanbase on EARTH has. They want universal respect (at minimum) and total adoration (maximum) from every fan of the sport. And they'll cry and whine about not having it until it becomes a reality. Only, it never will.

Delusional.

Let's be honest here, New York became sewer of racism and violence in the last 15-20 years. Everyday you read about an attack on elderly Asian pedestrian, people in expensive cars are attacked by gangs of youth just to smash their property and to steal their phones and wallets.

In my high school there was a female teacher who spent several years working in New York on the similar job position. She was appalled how majority of her students were uneducated and badly mannered. When she tried to approach their parents, majority of them responded that they don't have the time because they have to earn for their bills. She gave up after several years and went to Europe to work for four times less salary but in less stressful environment. It was 17 years ago. I presume today kids are even worse now with all the brainwashing through the media.

Why is everyone beating around the bush in here? We know who most USO tennis fans' favorite player is. :D They picked their man a long time ago so it's a tough pill for them to swallow that there may be someone better. They can tolerate Nadal but this guy, who is trying to take all the records? No way. To add insult to injury, his father trashes him in the press. I think that has a lot to do with it too tbh.

Honestly, USO fans don't have a great reputation. I still remember in 2001 and 2002 when Venus was getting booed against Capriati and Mauresmo, and she's from the US. A lot of people seem to forget that. Now, they love her when American tennis has dried up and the Williams sisters was the only thing keeping it afloat for years. Now American tennis is all but dead so they are just there for the beer, and act like jerks, which they are pretty good at.

As a New Yorker who has attended USO for decades (was in the Main Stadium seeing Chris Evert’s last match at USO), the Open stopped being about tennis long ago and is now an event to attend and talk about. Most non-tennis fan NYers are probably turned off by the Jokers neediness to be loved.

Beyond his current politics on Vaccination, which I was not aware of, and his politics of corruption when he was president of ATP Player Council, this guy is good at winning tennis titles but is an unworthy champion. He should just go about his business, which he is good at, and let the chips fall as they may with his popularity, or lack of.

I hope he does not achieve the Grand Slam. The likes of him to claim even half of what Rod Laver did cheapens the word champion as belonging to a Slam holder.
