Reasons why Novak is disliked in NY:

What's hypothetical about what I asked? Surely, there must be someone in the real world who doesn't like you? We all have enemies and people who don't like us. It's insanity that we can dictate to those people what they can and cannot say or do to us. People can do as they please, and take the consequences.

This notion of yours that "If you can't like him don't boo him" . . . that fans shouldn't even be allowed to voice their displeasure with Novak, valid or not, is that kind of TTW bizzaro-world stuff that boggles the mind. And why I think that fanboys aren't true 'fans' of sport.

Imagine Real Madrid fans saying they can't be booed.
Imagine New York Yankees fans saying they need to be loved by all.
Imagine Lakers fans insisting that even Celtic fans must respect them . . .

Djokovic fanboys want what no other sports fanbase on EARTH has. They want universal respect (at minimum) and total adoration (maximum) from every fan of the sport. And they'll cry and whine about not having it until it becomes a reality. Only, it never will.
Whatever.

Novak is just standing and they are booing. Not even going to read your paragraphs putting the blame on Djokovic fans. NYC crowd has no class

It's interesting, in his first two three years he was pretty well liked. Back when he did the impersonations and was the easy going but still competitive Novak. The Roddick thing is what I remember being a flash point where he became disliked. Especially funny how a guy like Monfils is beloved no matter who he plays against or where he plays.

Others have outlined general reasons, but I'll just put down why I don't like him:
  • His and his families arrogance and elitism.
  • His fans, many are pretty much for the same, then their deflecting with the standard "because he is Serbian" stuff.
  • On court behavior and just the way he carries himself.
I've always said, he may well be one of the best tennis players ever, but I don't watch him. Too many other players that I enjoy watching to waste that time. And certainly isn't one of the champions the way I see them.

NY'er probably fall in there somewhere.

I think you have to put #5 up higher

It's not just any one thing. It's that any time this dude gets himself on TV he's doing one of the following:

Screaming
Throwing/smashing racquets
Questioning science
Stirring up sht on the tour
Smirking or acting dismissive
Beating a more likable player and doing some disingenuous celebration

Oh and every time his Dad gets on TV or in front of any media really he trashes other players, or "The West" like it's still the Cold War,

And that's pretty much it.
You forgot the boob throw celebration. It makes me cringe each time.

Two notable reasons why I disliked Djoker early on. Given the bad start and since then, his almost cringing attempts to win over crowds end of each match, it has been hard to like Djokovic. It is undeniable to me though that he will rank inside the All Time Great Top 5 list.
  1. His frequent and questionable mid match retirements.
  2. His claiming he should've won the RG 2006 match against Rafa after retiring midway through 3rd set. Showed mentality of a loser.

Was it ever determined the real size of the “abdominal tear” that Fritz inflicted on poor Joe Kovic during AO?
2.5 cm abdominal tear confirmed on MRI.
Do try to keep up Tom.

He said he had never experienced an injury like the one he suffered in the third round.
'I went to an MRI and then MRI has shown a tear. People questioned that, I understand they questioned that there is a tear – there is,' he told Nine.

Confirmed by Djokovic himself, that settles that

It’s hard to keep up with experts of propaganda dissemination like y’all, Professor Raul. Did you see the MRI images yourself, Dr. Raul, or are y’all trusting the Serbian myth spinner, the same guy who has claimed he grew up with wolves in the mountains of his homeland? Where is the bruising and/or swelling in the cheesecake photo of your patient? Those are definitely symptoms caused by such a tear. Was it a grade 1, 2 or 3 strain/tear? The only thing I see about an inch in size in that photo is the width of that useless Band-Aid he is removing so dramatically in public to attempt for creating more spin about his heroic success overcoming an injury that shelves even the greatest athletes in the world up to six weeks

Please provide the information so we can all stay as informed as y’all, Dr. Raiul. I’m particularly interested if you have those MRIs or even photos of Joe Kovic’s abdomen 24 hours or so after the Fritz match; you know, when the purples and greens from such a muscle tear are most intense.

I have to ask: are you really this gullible in matters besides your compulsive adoration of Joe Kovic? If so, Dean Wormer has some advice:

I don't know how you can question Novak's medical acumen, after all he did have his gluten allergy diagnosed by placing a piece of bread on his stomach! (Thank you to Dr Raul for posting that article!) He's on the cutting edge of medical science!

All kidding aside, I've always liked Joker as a player and he seems like a nice guy off court. Don't care for his angry outbursts and need to be adored but whatever, he's a passionate guy lol. I actually really dislike modern media because if it weren't for digital media I wouldn't know what a total ignorant buffoon Joker is when it comes to science. I mean who cares about his backwoods voodoo gluten diagnosis (it's kind of funny in a sad way) but I do care about him and his wife spreading misinformation about covid because people actually listen to him. Same goes for Tsitsi (although he is young so I give him a slight break for being stupid, unlike Novak who is 34).

Yes I miss the good old days when sports stars could just be admired for their sporting skill - however in today's world they have a platform and millions listen to their every word about any/all subjects. The fact that Joker uses his platform to spew his anti science ignorance makes me not like him.

Flip this around and what do you get?

Oh, that’s right, what you’ve been doing
SJ…Stands for Raul_SpinJunkie, no? Addicted to getting Joe Kovic in the best light possible.

I often get a 2.5 cm split in my side from ROFL maneuvers elicited by the Good Doctor’s posts. Wasn’t the Hurkacz vs Berry Twin Towers peak Dr. Raul?

It’s nothing personal just Fedal is liked more in US so with Djokovic set to overtake them they can’t deal with it.

Also it’s funny them disliking Djokovic but the best big 3 matches at the USO he’s in everyone

If you think the average tennis crowd at any tourney has this much in depth knowledge on a player, you are mistaken

The simplest explanation is always the right one.... people root for a guy if what they see on court is appealing to them
^ This in a nutshell.

@Ledigs: do you really think for a second that the 'real' world vets players with the obsessive veracity of TW Talk-Tennis psychos?

Yeah agree with his comment that you bolded. In the thread that was on here which shows Fed still getting more endorsements than Djokodal yet he’s mostly finished is due to his game which catches the eye of non tennis fans.
I always said that about Fed no matter if you rate Djokodal higher he still did so much for tennis especially too people that don’t watch it on a regular basis.
I played tennis for 7 years and the thing that impressed me most about Djokovic is his ability to make the hard shots look simple yet to people that don’t understand or never play tennis they think it’s boring. Djokovic will never get the love from the outside fans but so be it

Idgaf if he destroys Fedals records, Sampras is my still my guy and he’s been surpassed 3 times over lol I respect Nole’s achievements but like many just not drawn, connected to him. Life goes on and gets crazy I forgot the USO started until I came on these boards just now lol pretty sure that’s never happened.

Lol wtf? So you think people just buy US Open tickets blind and have no clue who’s playing? Djokovic is someone even the most unaware US Open attendee would know about.
LOL so many of those Ashe tickets are corporate owned! Especially in the night sessions! The level of in depth tennis knowledge at the US Open is probably lower than any of the other majors!

Djoko is an all-time great even if he never hit another ball. Djoko has a great chance to win the calendar grand slam and in doing so put forth a very strong argument for the (TW TT-obsessive) G.O.A.T. title. The guy's great, he may have some quirks that turn non-Djoko fanbois off but overall I think (admittedly from a distance) he's an ok dude with a good sense of humor. Dork? Jerk? nah....I've seen much worse...

Yeah well obviously he is a all time great and off court he is a good guy plus when he loses his reaction at the net is always great and respectful.
Look I get he’s not for everyone and I wish other fans would get that too

@sureshs is not gluten intolerant because every time someone puts a piece of bread close enough to him be gobbles it down.

It's amazing... when someone asks here, "why do people hate ------ (fill in the blank- - example: Melbourne or Doha or Acapulco), I never venture an opinion because I've never been to these places.

Yet you have hundreds of people who have never (and will never be) to New York and they weigh in as if they own the world or know NYC.

Pssst.... 75% of people who attend the USO have a Queens, NY address. Guess who was born and grew up in Queens, NY -- besides McEnroe?

So all you people from Serbia or India or wherever need to stand down. NY-ers DETEST Djokovic and stop weighing in on this subject when you live 5-10,000 miles or kilometers away.

I have only spent limited amount of time in hotels near the airport, but I assume New Yorkers would dislike Djokovic for the same reasons the rest of the world does (and you can add to that the old controversy with Roddick, plus what happened last year). I guess I don't think of dislike for Djokovic as a product of cultural deformation of people around NY.

And you prove my thesis when you hysterically say "I have only spent a limited amount of times in HOTELS near the AIRPORT in NYC," but weigh in with total omniscience.

Beyond belief.

Are you a native NY-er? Have you lived in NYC? Are you at the very least married to a native NY-er from any borough? Are you an American citizen who has lived in the state of New York?

No. No to all of these questions.

But you know better.

Got it.

Localism breeds its own sort of ignorance, and that's doubly so if tennis is a one-borough game.

The makeup of Ashe looked to be largely Manhattanites and commuters more than the native Queens attendees who historically make up the crowd. Especially with the mandatory vax element. However Beatles is right - it’s NY residents almost exclusively. Alcohol was certainly a huge factor and always is at the night sessions.

I look forward to asking people directly what they think of Djokovic rather than reading more pointless speculation.

From 10,000 miles away in the middle of nowhere, you've done nothing but troll the U.S. Open tournament, the venue of the tournament, and the citizenry of the venue with one snide assumption after another. You're a bitter drunk, and and a nasty drunk at that.

You're either incapable of understanding your own alcohol tolerance or you just don't care--that is your problem, not mine. And, word to the wise: getting white girl wasted then trying to make up for your empty life by trolling on an American tennis board is neither funny, nor clever. You're a sloppy freaking mess and people pity you. Grow up.

While I don't disagree with you regarding the presumptuous know-nothings from 10,000 miles away, I do (per the bolded above) ask if you would have a source. Further, as a born-in-manhattan ny'er I disagree with your sweeping assumption that all NY'ers hate Djokovic. I would leave the sweeping, know-nothing generalizations to "10,000 mile away" clowns like the one below -- you're much better than that BF.

I don’t think anyone would think Djokovic is unknown. Even the casual tennis fan knows the situation in this tournament. The things the OP mentioned are not known to all though.
