  1. Doesn’t want to mandate vaccines
  2. Adria Covid tour while NY was in lockdown watching in disbelief
  3. People misinterpreted his pressure is a privilege comments
  4. Broke his racket at Olympics and came across petulant
  5. DQ from US Open last year for hitting linesperson with the ball in negligent anger
  6. Roddick controversy long ago
  7. Might break Federer’s majors record
  8. Hasn’t won here all that much comparatively
  9. Overall started out with a poor reputation due to his fitness level and retirements
  10. NY generally prefers underdogs unless it’s a very special figure. Note Del Potro had the crowd support in 2009 and Agassi in the early 2000s match vs Fed.

If you think the average tennis crowd at any tourney has this much in depth knowledge on a player, you are mistaken

The simplest explanation is always the right one.... people root for a guy if what they see on court is appealing to them

Lol wtf? So you think people just buy US Open tickets blind and have no clue who’s playing? Djokovic is someone even the most unaware US Open attendee would know about.

the average crowd does not know in depth stuff like Adria or previous MTOs etc for sure..
you get to hear the most weird conversations... people literally have no clue.

there were these women who were calling Roig Uncle Toni to get his attention. they seemed like Rafans to boot

Tell you what. I’m going to the USO 4th round on Monday and will personally walk around Ashe with a video camera and crowdsource people asking “why are you cheering against Djokovic”. Hopefully this will help.
Cus fudge ‘em, that’s why! Is what I’d say.

I think you have to put #5 up higher

It's not just any one thing. It's that any time this dude gets himself on TV he's doing one of the following:

Screaming
Throwing/smashing racquets
Questioning science
Stirring up sht on the tour
Smirking or acting dismissive
Beating a more likable player and doing some disingenuous celebration

Oh and every time his Dad gets on TV or in front of any media really he trashes other players, or "The West" like it's still the Cold War,

And that's pretty much it.

I think you underestimate the average person tbh. Obviously kids and maybe a few friends/SOs who come along wouldn’t know much. But there’s been way too much coverage about Djokovic and way too many high profile news items (the DQ, Olympics comments, Wimby 2019, etc) for someone to have no opinion on the guy by now. Playing style is a part of it tho.

I do agree with your general point about people on this forum waaaay over analyzing things. We are in the 1% of the 1% of the informed on tennis news, lol. a lot of these posts tonight trying to project onto random strangers have been embarrassing to read.

But still let’s not act like these people are coming in blind - in fact a lot of them already like Federer or Nadal which could be an even bigger reason.

Thanks in advance. Some of them I guess are Fed's fans. I saw some hats with Fed's logo tonight.

Del Porto did not have the crowd support against Fed in 2009. Watch the match again. It was 90-10 for Fed.

Agassi played Roger three times at the USO, not once as you suggest. They played there is 2001, 2004 and 2005. In any case, Andre was a hugely popular American player and obviously had fan support in NY. He was not the underdog in 2001 against Fed, Roger won a total of 7 games!

is he liked anywhere outside of central europe??

In Australia and in Asia (Shanghai/Beijing) he seems very popular. In Beijing he has always had the crowd's support. I believe the crowd would have supported him in Tokyo. In Melbourne unless he is facing Federer or an australian player. They were clearly rooting for him this year against Zverev and Medvedev. Also in Italy (Rome)... he seems to get thr crowd's support in most matches. In Dubaï/Doha unless he faces Federer. I know he's also super popular in India, although he's never played any tournement there.

OP, I only agree with 5, 7 and 10 in your list. Maybe partly with 9, although we coild debate this one for hours.
1 is stupid, no one should be judged over his opinions about covid.
2 is history, 99% (outside of this forum) probably has no idea the Adria tour even happened. Remember it was an exhibition (meant to collect funds).
3 there is nothing to misinterpret. The statement was clear.
4 Huh? If every players who break rackets were disliked, more than 2/3 of the players could join him. Starting with the new big3.
6 Long forgotten. What percentage of the crowd was already actively following tennis in 2008? And among those people, who remembers this?
8 Eight USO finals. Between 2007 and 2018 he was in the last 4 every year. But he hasn't won much? lol

Yeah, 7 is correct, and not just Federer but also Nadal. Their fans don't want him to get 21, which is understandable. 5 could also be a factor, but a small one. The main argument is 10. People want to see close, long matches, and tend to root for the underdog in most matches. No one wants to pay such expensive tickets for a night session in the biggest stadium in the world, and watch epic beatdowns 61 61 61 in 70 minutes. Who can blame them?

I always thought that New Yorkers disliked him because he was too much like them. Nadal, and particularly Federer, were aspirational.

He's stubborn, strongly opinionated, somewhat impatient and temperamental. These are probably just big city attitudes, but they apply to Djokovic more than the other two.

Funny. I have always thought that as well. But never heard anyone else say it. And everytime I suggested that to may mates in the tennis playing fraternity, they would all disagree.

Djokovic was "All Class" last night against Rune. He pretty much tanked the 2nd last game of the match so Rune would not walk off the court with a 0-6 Final Set score.

I cannot imagine Rafa ever doing that. I imagine Roger might do it under some circumstances. But Novak looked like he was going to do something like that at some point during the 4th Set once it was obvious Rune was done. Rune won the first two points of the game on merit. And then Novak basically gifted him the next two points knowing he himself was easily going to serve out the match in the next game ... which he proceeded to do.

Great effort by Rune to even complete the match given his condition. It could have been a sour memory but thanks to his persistence and Novak's kind gesture it will be a good one for him and spur him onto greater heights. Pity a lot of the lunkheads in the crowd didn't seem to pick up on Novak's gesture.

And I don't think the crowd were booing at the end of the match. It sounded like the were chanting "RUNE!!!!" to give the young fellow some encouragement.

I think you are right about that.

Watching pretty much all of the Tennis media - particularly the American ones - discussing Djokovic achieving the GRAND SLAM, they pretty much all agreed that if he does it, he becomes the GOAT!

The "recency bias" endemic in current generations of humanity - especially younger generations - causes a lot of people to "forget" what came before very quickly.

If Novak wins this US Open, he will have climbed to the top of the mountain and be welcomed with open arms by Laver, Smith-Court and Graf.

IME, Americans (and in particular "New Yorkers") LOVE A WINNER !!! Watch those against him start cheering for him the minute they realise Tennis History is well within reach and they were there to witness it!

I would assume it has to do with three things

1. He's the overwhelming force in tennis, and he's not American. Nadal has never dominated for a sustained period the way Novak has, and when Roger did, while he was certainly not treated the way Novak is, he wasn't overwhelmingly cheered the way has become the case in the past decade either.

2. Maybe they can smell the desperate stench of desire to be loved that radiates from him and his fans, and that sort of thing is never getting you over, especially not in a place like that.

3. The way he plays is never going to have the same kind of mass appeal as Roger does with all his pretty crap, and Rafa with his forehand and his VAMOSing. Maybe if he did more of his roaring stuff there it might help?

Further thoughts:

I think there might be a trajectory of 'crimes' committed that could have lead to this. Like you note, the crap with Roddick all that time ago which turned him in their eyes from the class clown to some kind of villain.

Follow that up with his deposing of King Roger, which they technically loved the first time that he did it in 2010, maybe slightly less so when it went from being just that one return in 2011 to actually winning the match, and then when he well and truly finished the job in 2015 that was probably the last straw. I don't believe, off the top of my head, that incidents of Novak being majorly unpopular in New York predate the 2015 final, do they?

OR, they could just have all of the sense of a WWE crowd, who once they get into a groove of reacting a certain way can't get out of it. They'll keep booing you even if they don't dislike you, keep chanting "YOU SUCK" or "WHAT?" at you even if they do, etc.

Del Potro had some crowd support versus Federer but the crowd was still packed with Federer worshippers. Del Potro also had a vocal contingent of Argentinians backing him in the stadium.

This post is right on the money.

It's mainly because, like so many glory chasers in sport, they are overwhelmingly Federer fans -frantic with fear that their favourite's slam record is going to be overtaken.

At the Wimbledon final there were two posh imbeciles in front of me with Federer hats who had bought an Italian flag (they weren't Italian) and were screaming and waving it every time Djokovic made a double fault or an error. The officials had to warn them to sit down. It was embarrassing to see the desperation.

This is exactly what people who can't come to terms with Djokovic's deep and repulsive character flaws tell themselves.

Screaming and cheering DFs and UEs is a point where Djokovic stops being the problem. It's one thing not to like someone, entirely different to openly hate. I agree that Djokovic has given some people plenty of reasons not to be his fans and not to like him (#1 is beating their favorite over and over, no matter what others think, 2008 Roddick is long forgotten), everything over that line is just using his questionable actions as a means of justification of their already well developed hate towards him. And this is where the herd mentality comes into play, not only at the USO, but also across multiple events. Turns out, we were right all along to hate him, since he broke his racquet yesterday, and also Wimbledon crowd hates him too. So, lets just try our best to make his life miserable on the court.

Imo, it's a 50-50 thing. Djokovic brought it to the edge, the crowd gladly took over from there.

I can forgive all other reasons except that one.
