Recent College Players That Turned Pro

What the heck is going on with Taylor Fritz ???????? he just lost to Brandon Nakashima from Virginia who just turned pro in December. Hawaiian open. Surely Nakashima , a top 50 player right away ?? Is this real ?

I saw that match. Nakashima played like the veteran, very solid. Fritz played tentative and didn't seem confident in his shots.

and now Thompson about to beat Querry in the other semis...… it most likely will be Thompson vs Nakashima...…….. what is this ? amateur league. I know ATP cup is next week but seriously ?????

Truthfully I'd rather see Nakashima vs Thompson but I know what you're saying. Who were the finalists last year? All I remember were the Harrison brothers playing.

Nakashima is playing better than his ranking over the last 6 months. Has two noteable wins over Taro Daniel #111, lost to Jenson Brrosby within the year. Jordan Thompson is no slouch by Standford standards, he beat fellow amateur Bradley Klahn in Antalya, Turkey 250. Posted other noteable pro wins over Gasquet, Tiafoe, de Minaur, Dimitrov and others in 2019. Unlike Naskishima, Thompson took an "L" v Taro Daniel this year.

Nakashima v Thompson should be a good match. Pick JT in 3.

looks like Sam the man Querry will show the new upstart what the big league tennis is all about in the final. but Nakashima the Socal boy has improved great deal. his serve in particular has improved tremendously. It is bigger and and more accurate. and it is close to ATP tour level serve now. This is a shot that limits so many college guys from jumping into the the big league ATP tennis.

Is Brandon Nakashima the best college player to turn pro in last 10 years ?? looks that way. even steve Johnson struggled for couple of years before rising to top 50. Nakashima is giving Sam Querry top 20 player all he can handle. I know this is a Exo event in Hawaii but still as I watch Nakashima's game, ATP tour level shot making and Power game is all there. It just looks like he needs to improve his movement a bit and his concentration on every point. power serve, groundies and decent transition game is all there, all ATP tour level. Currently Socal dude Brandon is coachless. Who would be a good coach for him ???????? BRAD Gilbert ?? Also Kei Nishikori knows a good talent on the rise when he sees one. He was watching the final between Sam Querry vs Nakashima closely in Hawaii.

Whoa... let's not trip out over a good win. Nakashima beating Fritz was unexpected, but Fritz looked pretty unmotivated. And even though it was close, Querrey won their match as expected. It was definitely exhibition tennis on the heels of a holiday with what looked like some rum punch mixed in. I'm rooting for Nakashima to be successful, but let's not get over our skis now.

What about Mackenzie McDonald? He got up to #57 and won $1.2 million on the tour before his hamstring tendon injury at the French Open this year. He has wins over Fritz, Opelka, Rublev, Tiafoe, Auger-Aliassime, Raonic, and Del Potro while getting 2 Futures and 2 Challenger level titles and a 4th round at Wimbledon. MM has a beautiful game and I expect him to get inside the top 50 once he recovers from his surgery. Nakashima doesn't compare to that yet.

listen carefully when I tell you this. I am one of the smartest people in this country. and I can clearly see this guy has weapons the Macdonald didn't have or don't have. Nakashima does everything better than Mackie except movement. Nakashima has and will have a great serve that can force 1 or 2 service winners or aces every game he serves. That is a huge advantage in ATP tour if you also back it up with power groundies with accuracy

This is probably what occurred when the TD called Fritz.

Hawaii Open TD: Hi Taylor, nishikori just pulled out of the exhibition and we need someone to fill in for him.

TF: Uh, I’m enjoying Christmas dinner with my family. Don’t think I can make it.

TD: C’mon, Taylor. $250K appearance fee plus we’ll pay to fly you and your family 1st class to Hawaii. Just show up, lose the match, spend the rest of the time finishing your Christmas vacation on the beautiful island and get paid to do it. What do you say?

TF: Wow, sounds great. Book the flight and accommodations.

;)

Didn’t you predict that Bradley Klahn would be a top 20 player? Can’t remember all of the other accurate predictions you made. There are so many.

Don't forget Fawcett and every other cardinal that has played in the last dozen years. Klahn does have a very good serve but like Johnson has a backhand that gets exposed a lot.

LOL,, his backhand is nothing like Johnson. Johnson couldn't hit his 2 handed backhand to save his life whereas Nakashima hits it like Novak Djokivic

McKenzie McDonald, Noah Rubin and Joe Salisbury are the best college players to have recently turned pro. The first two have been hampered by injury, the 3rd just played in the ATP Masters.
