This year, so far, we have had 3 different grand slam champions on the WTA.
Serena d. Sharapova at the AO
Henin d. Ivanovic at the FO
Venus d. Bartoli at W
If we rewind back to 2004:
Henin d. Clijsters at the AO
Myskina d. Dementieva at FO
Sharapova d. Serena at W
Kuznetsova d. Dementieva
and in 2005:
Serena d. Davenport at the AO
Henin d. Pierce
Venus d. Davenport
Clijsters d. Pierce
Therefore, according to recent history, there is a likely chance that we will have 4 different champions this year. It is also possible that we could have like 2004 a double losing finalist. In 2004 Elena Dementieva lost both her grand slam finals; losing both the French and US open. It is possible that Sharapova, Ivanovic and most unlikely that Bartoli could lose at the US Open final.
The winner of the 2007 US Open, if history is to be repeated could provide a new champion with the likely candidates being Vaidisova or Jankovic.
Any thoughts?
