I will be visiting the Monteray Bay area and interested in hearing "Recommend Tennis Courts at Carmel by the Sea". Not sure if I will make the SF cruz to play with the Golden Gate Park boys. I bet @LeeD has surfed most of the coast atleast south to Big Sur so maybe he has some recommendations ? Public is preferred, not planning on playing Pebble Beach ;)

I will also be doing some classic riding and plan on doing below:

C'mon, Joe---play Pebble Beach! They've got 2 claycourts there. (But yep, it's private and pricey.) I'm pretty sure none of the other clubs down there have any grass.
I think the only public hardcourts are the 6 or so at Carmel High School. It's right off Rt. 1 at Ocean Ave.

I prefer to play on Har-tru but red clay has a visual appeal.

    Public courts in Carmel?

Plan A: Carmel HS rt. off Highway 1 just north of Carmel Valley Rd. (never played there but seems nicer than plan B)

Plan B: Carmel Valley Middle School
courts are not awesome-- about 5 i'd say--but as long as it's not school hours, you'll get a court-- Go east on Carmel Valley Rd. bout 1/4 mile from Highway 1 and the school's on the rt. (south side) can't miss it

I hear you on the experience at PB :) If any of my woody bros were also playing then it would surely be worth the occasion ;) This time is just with family and the others dont appreciate the diff between public hards and exclusive dirt/grass. Will put that savings towards some nice food and drinks :)

I live here. There are plenty of courts to play on in Carmel, Pacific Grove, Monterey and Carmel Valley. Many public courts. Many private clubs too. The problem will be finding a person to hit with. I can only think of one public venue where you'll find a good player to hit with because there is a tennis shop and they are very good at setting up matches for you. MONTEREY TENNIS CENTER. Very reasonable rates. Pro Shop. Six Lighted courts.

While Carmel High School is easy to find, you won't find any "players" hanging around looking for a game.

There are clay courts at Pebble, but unless you are staying there or are a member you can forget playing the courts at the Beach Club.
There are clay courts at Carmel Valley Tennis Ranch but unless you are staying there or are a member, forget it.

Other private clubs are Chamisal and Carmel Valley Athletic Club (where I play). I don't know if you can play there unless you are a member, but worth the call because they are the best hard courts in the area. We have some clinics that are OPEN to the non member playing public. Call:

Thanks for the info. Have not hit any courts yet but have seen a few public choices while driving and cycling around Carmel and Monterey. Not looking for a competitive match as we have enough for a family fun dubs match. Its just so nice cycling and hiking in these areas that I have not thought too much about tennis.

Non-members can play at CVAC, as long as they're brought in by a member--I've done it twice now. Absolutely splendid venue--beautiful, alluring spa/tennis/fitness enclave nestled in the hills of Carmel.
