Recommendations for Buying Shoes

Hi good folk,

I wanted to get some feedback from a few enthusiasts here about tennis shoes. I am looking to switch from Head Sprint Pro just to mix things up a bit. I love the shoe and I'm a huge fan but I am looking for change.

I loved my Court Ballistics 4.3 before I switched to Head. Nike usually along with Adidas (Barricade line) run narrow for me but CB 4.3 was surprisingly comfortable. Alas they stopped making it. I have two pairs of Barricades too (Team 4 and 8) but I am not a fan of either so unless Adidas make a different shoe that isn't shaped like a torpedo (for narrow feet) I think Adidas is out. Head's new Revolt & Nitro seem intriguing to me but Revolt seems like a copy of Barricades.

I am leaning towards Vapor 9.5 too since a few friends have that and give raving reviews. I'm not sure if I would like their feel. Same for the Babolat Jets. Lunars replaced CB from what I know, but they just look ugly.

Any recommendations? Looking for tad wider from the toe and light weight shoes. I have a tendency to drag toes so something durable as well.

Thanks a lot!

Hey Haqqani, as a Asics fan, I would recommend you the Asics Gel Solution Speed 2 which is really nice and a comfortable shoe as well. The durability is pretty much fine.

There is also the GSS 3 which is little bit heavier, and in the rear end I have a feel that they are made of some kind of "plastic" or something similar which I don't like, so I like the GSS 2 more.

Also, Asics has the Gel Resolution 5 and 6 which are heavier than the GSS and have more durability.

I'm playing with both of these shoes. The Gel Solution Speed 2 I'm using them in the summer (clay) season and the Gel Resolution I'm preferring on the hard court season they are better for hard court for me than the clay one.

Also I used the Vapor's 9.5 which have a great comfort but the durability is AWFUL.

And for the end, I have seen many people giving Mizuno now a try which have two great models, so you can check them also. They are also light as the Asics's ones. Many Pro players are rocking them currently on the tour.

I hope I have helped you somehow.
Cheers and good luck in your shopping!

Thanks for the excellent and detailed reply, @fazlameister - I have never tried Asics or Mizuno before. I will definitely look into them both after your recommendation.

I would second Gel Solution Speed 2. That are very comfortable and good for wide feet.
However, I have found that Resolution line runs narrower, and I don't have stability I need.
If you are looking to stay with Nike, Zoom Cage 2 are your best bet. They run wide and long, so I would order half size down.
They are very comfortable and durability is good.

I also heard that the Zoom Cage 2 is good but never tried them. Nike hasn't any durability nowadays don't know the situation with the new Zoom Air Fly or something like that don't know the right name.

Thank you very much. I'm very intrigued about Asics now. Never knew they were so popular :)

The asics gel Challengers are a good shoe as well. It comes in a little lighter in weight than the gel resolutions, and a little lower in price as well. Comfortable right out of the box.

the zoom 2 is a fine shoe..and they last about 2 months..which is fine since they are played out and dead and ready to be redeemed for the warranty.. i am glad the outsole doesn't last the full 6 months.. the structure of the shoe would be trashed in 2 months and you would either have to suffer another few months to earn the warranty..or just toss em

So if I'm right, they have some kind of warranty? But they are hell expensive ..

Like some above posters, I would suggest you check out Asics. My current shoe is the GR6 and I have had nothing but positive experiences with them. No plans to wear anything but Asics

they have a great warranty.. the best out there. you buy a pair [no matter the cost] and when you eat a hole in the sole within 6 months..you send them back and nike will give a voucher for full retail replacement value. you have to buy from the website.. and you can buy anything you like.

I'm another fan of the Asics GR6. I rotate my GR6 with the Prince T22, another shoe I like which has more cushioning but weighs more. The GR6 is the best shoe I've worn for court movement. It feels light and provides plenty of stability and support for changing directions. The only drawback with the GR6 is that some people experience heel slippage, partly because of the low ankle collar. It also doesn't give you much room to add a thick aftermarket insole.

I'm an Asics GSS 2 fan as well. I also own the vapor 9.5s but the Asics feel so great, I forget they're on my feet.

Nike Lunars for hard courts, Asics GR5 for clay all with Dr Scholls active gel insoles.

You care about looks lol? Yeah the Lunars look ugly, while being the best shoe on the market imho!
Addidas 5 and 8 are also crap for me, causing plantar fasciitis even on clay.

Vapors are too flimsy for clay while on hard courts the sole will be shaved in no time.

Tried Lunars, didn't like them at all. Nowhere near as good as my Courtballistics were. Felt bulky & slow (looks are just anothere negative). Vapors are good but I agree, not durable. I wear out my usual pairs on hard courts in a couple of months anyway, Vapors won't last even that long. I am really leaning towards Asics as they seem very popular.

To me Lunars feel faster than the previous CourtBallistics.

Asics might be popular but I've seen two problems with GR5 on hard courts:
  1. Lack of frontal support causes pains in the balls of the feet (metatarsalgia)
  2. Rolling ankles easily.
I use them on clay though, where those don't matter + they got the deepest herringbone thread/pattern.

I'm waiting for your feedback when you buy the Asics haha! You won't regret it, surely :) good luck
