Another go at it today with Anil (me in white shorts today). Overall score was pretty lopsided in my favor but most of the games were very competitive. Continuing to work on adding some pace but still struggling with arming.

Watched like 3 games, looks like you're tight through your strokes and it's causing you to be disconnected and kinda arm/chest the ball.

Powerful shots aren't about hitting the ball hard, they're about accelerating the racquet.

Your takeback looks ok for now, work on grounding yourself and swinging loose for more controlled power. Also getting your feet to the ball so that you're in place for better power hitting but footwork takes a long time, learning to ground through your shots can probably be short term and let you hit the balls that come to the right spot hard (since that sounds like a goal of yours)

Thanks, yeah overall looseness and lazy footwork, or just plain misjudging the ball seem to be my issues. I saw a video recently which recommended people use their non-dominant hand on the throat of the racket during FH takeback, and this can help promote better coiling. Looking at myself I see coiling (late and only partial) is a weakness. Does that sound like something I should try?

It is something you should try to do.

It is not something I think will have much immediate effect outside of shadow swinging.

Fully coiling should be the goal, but if you're not reacting/moving to the ball in time so you probably won't have time to fully coil on all shots right now.

Maybe see if someone will feed you a bit so you can practice full coil. But mostly practice bending your knees and letting the racquet swing through with acceleration.

Another couple sets with a comparably skilled buddy here. (Me with neon green strings).

Started experimenting with an open stance and hope to get more comfortable with it. I can see my objective of tossing the ball into the court is causing some foot faults… Pretty happy with the consistent depth I was getting on my groundies (close to 70% beyond the service line).

I think the games were 6-2, 6-0….he may have thrown the towel in on the second set….not certain we actually got to 6 games.

Was extremely windy today but we persevered for three sets. Here are a few of the best rallies (I am in gray shirt). I nearly bageled him yet felt I really had to work for it. My other partner PK (original video and a few other appearances) messed up his calf so is out of action for awhile, hence the new guy who is still shaking off the rust.

Hooked up with a younger more proficient and athletic player (he has a 30 percent win rate in a San Diego 4.5 league) and held my own in a couple casual practice sets. Well maybe more than held my own, taking both sets (7-6, 6-4). I am the white guy in gray longsleeves and these are some of my more satisfying moments. What the rest of the video would show is what you already know: hit deep consistently and make fewer errors. If I am lucky this fellow will play me weekly.
