Recycled tennis clothing sales pitch?

With many tennis clothing brands advertising using recycled materials in their lines, how many people consider this a significant factor in buying them? While I support significant efforts to clean up our oceans and recycle plastics that would otherwise go into landfills, it seems like a hollow promise to me. After all, it takes a lot of energy to breakdown those waste materials, then produce the raw materials that will go into the production of new clothes and even more energy to produce different colors and designs for the recycled items.

Wouldn't we be better off with just keeping and rewashing the tennis clothing we already own? After all, we selected sizes, colors and designs that pleased us originally, and each time we wash and reuse each piece of clothing we must be using a fraction of the energy and resources to produce a "recycled" piece of clothing in our favorite sport. I've found using products like Active Wear laundry detergent seems to help reduce sweat and odors from my tenniswear and allows years of use before it gets worn out.

Most those brands use fabric that is made from recycled yarn so you literally don’t have to care at all and you’re still supporting a good cause ..that is if you chose to buy new. I mean there’s no upcharge or anything.Of course the best approach would be what Patagonia preaches which is to buy used or wear the same fleece jacket for 30 years and put patches on them when they get holes and then wear them for another 30 years

I love the adidas ocean parley line

I love the look of the Aussie Open kit from a few years ago, the Ocean one.

The moister wicking is another story, the shirt clings like plastic wrap in with any perspiration. It looks like I swam with the shirt on after just a few game. Great looking shirt, not very functional.

Because of this I haven’t given this line a second look

For those of us who repeatedly wash our tennis clothes, I wonder how many cycles the protective qualities (sunscreen, odor protection, what-have-you) last before the fabric treatment gives up? Anybody have some factual info on this?

I asked Fila about this and here's their answer:

UV and odor protection are not a chemical treatment that can be washed out of the fabric. It's the type of material that repels UV rays. It's the textile wicking that is breathable and doesn't promote odor like other materials. The functionality has not been tested by the number of washes. The clothing will continue to give UV and odor protection as long as a person is able to wear it. Please keep in mind, a person must wear the apparel as intended, along with the proper personal hygiene.
