Semi-Pro
Cook-Redfoo won their opener! They're playing in the sectional semis today at 3:00.

Mr Foo was also in the singles bracket. Won his opener but lost in R32.

Middle States USONP starts this weekend. They seeded a whole bunch of players in the singles this year for the first time. The top seed is Matija Pecotic, who played 1 at Princeton a couple years ago. 2 is Punch Maleka, who wins whenever no one really good shows up. 3 is some kid who is a 5-star recruit starting at Princeton next year named Wasserman. The NJ state HS champ is seeded 12.

The doubles looks far more interesting than the singles (at least the finals). There are no seeds, but there are two obvious finalists on opposite sides of the draw. The Wasserman kid is playing with Nikita Kryvonos and Nathan Healey is playing with Ashley Fisher. My money is on Healey and Fisher, but that final should be outstanding.

There's an interesting doubles team in the Texas Draw, former ATP pros Luka Belic and Levar Harper-Griffith (unseeded).

In the doubles, there was a major upset yesterday as Kryvonos and Wasserman were beaten by two brothers who are 5.0 league players. Today in the Qs (starting right now in fact), Healey and Fisher are playing Catalin Gard and Andrei Daescu in a battle between 4 former touring pros. These are by far the best players left in the draw with Kryvonos going down yesterday.

In singles, Pecotic is playing a different game than everyone else. I'd be absolutely shocked if he lost. This draw has one active ATP touring pro in it, and it's easy to see the difference between him and everyone else.

Tony Larson got beat in the finals by U of M gopher player Felix Corwin 6-3, 7-6. On the bright side, he did win in mixed doubles so he's still alive.

Middle States is sending a VERY STRONG contingent to the national playoffs. Men's singles is Matija Pecotic, who is ranked in the top 300 and has won 3 singles futures tourneys this year (and 2 doubles futures as well). I wouldn't be surprised if he's the top seed in the national playoffs. He was playing a different game than everyone else this week.

Men's dubs is Nathan Healey & Ashley Fisher, two under-40 former top 100 ATP pros. Fisher was top 20 in dubs and made the USO semis within the last 10 years.

Women's singles is Jennifer Elie, who is a top 600 or so WTA pro, and mixed is Andrei Deascu and Anda Perianu, two former touring pros from Romania.

So, Middle States will send a current pro who is almost on the edge of automatic entry in the USO qualies in men's singles, a lower ranked touring pro in women's, and under-40 former touring pros, including a USO semifinalist, in both men's & mixed dubs. Is there another section with a stronger lineup? It was a pleasure watching the MS tourney this week.
