^^^Johnny Mac also said Fed would win a "few" grand slams when he saw Fed beat Pete at Wimby

They say the game moves forward every five years or so now, and I think this will be an interesting year for the 1HBH stars, Fed and Henin. Both have been pushed by big hitters lately, and I think the balance in the game has reached the point where there may be too much power in the game for the 1HBH player to set up consistently.

here's the OP again, I want to get this thread back on track:

I thought this was a very interesting post by The Truth in another Thread:

The Truth said:
Yes, I am. Check out his contemporaries who all left at the same time and the newbies he was gifted with. Now throw in all the mind influence of the commentators and voila! What healthy grand slam winners did Federer compete with during his reign?

Safin-knee injury, considered quitting
Hewitt-Chicken pox, never got back to form
Ferrero-See Hewitt
Roddick-Once his serve was exposed no longer a true threat to the field
Guga-surgeries
Haas-three surgeries
Canas-gone for several years due to trumped up charges
Nalbandian-in and out, who previously owned him

the rest of the field are newbies, five to seven years younger than Fed who are/were gaining experience.

Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Berdych, Gasquet, and others.

So who or what was Federer reigning over? A decapitated field. Simple as that

Now, three players are playing good tennis and Fed is in a crisis? Oh wait, mono, and even some of his staunchest fans are jumping ship. Where is the magic in that? I ain't the one smoking, dude!

You can add Coria and Gaudio to that list as they have both had mental breakdowns.(which probably explains how federer even got to a french open final)

You can also factor in the sameness of all the surfaces to explain his year round dominance.

Clay is much much faster, grass is waaaaaaay slower.

Any thoughts?

I'm just thinkning about this because, as with Sampras, all people are going to see when they look at federer in the last couple of years of his career is a guy with a weak backhand, over reliant on his serve and forehand, and not noticably more incredible than the rest of the field, and the commments will come that, ''federer wouldn't be top 20 today'

BeHappy, I have enjoyed reading this thread, as I am very new to tennis and being a fan, I am taking it all in. I am having trouble understanding what real purpose you have to making this thread, though. I know you keep saying you want to 'stick to the issue' or what The Truth wrote, but isn't he sorta bashing Federer? Or making him not out to be the tennis genius that most would award him to be?
Your tone of getting back to the OP, sounds exactly that, like you want to hear 'bashing of Fed' go on. No?

I want to objectively discuss how to assess fed's career and dominance and how it stacks up to all the other G.O.A.T'S.
The Truth made a very good point, all the great players of Fed's generation got injuries and their game suffered.

It's always "bashing" Federer if you don't agree he's God! If you look at the other factors like competition, you're bashing Fed. If you think he's arrogant, you're bashing Fed. If you think he's ugly, you're bashing Fed. Everybody else is free game, but oohhh don't say anything about Federer. Well, so be it. Everyone gets bashed on a tennis board, and those who can't handle it, or want to call names as a last resort shouldn't try to participate. I wouldn't if I knew I couldn't handle the opinions of others. And lastly, The Truth is a woman!

So.... to do that you base the thread on the rantings of one of most notorious fed bashers on this forum? riiight. You got what you wanted.

What were Safin's results like before his knee injury?
What were Nalbandian's injuries?
'Serve being exposed' counts as an injury now re: Roddick?
What the h2h against Haas before his surgeries?
Guga is 5 years older than Fed, not in his generation. Even so the h2h is just 1-2.
Chicken pox ruined Hewitt's career!!?? I thought his wife and child always got the blame for that.
There's no way of knowing where Ferrero's career would be now had he not gotten chicken pox. He could've been challenging for slams....or ended up like Coria.
LMFAO at the inclusion of Canas as a 'great player.'

Coria and Gaudio to that list as they have both had mental breakdowns.
Gaudio v. Fed (pre 'mental breakdown' lol)- 3-0, 2 of those on clay.
Coria v. Fed (")- 2-0. Both on clay.
So yes, I'm sure Federer never would've made it to FO final if he had to play those two

Ahhh, have a different opinion of Federer, you're a basher. I guess in all of your posts you're complimentary of all tennis players. If you don't like one of them, that's your definition of a basher? You guys are sick. You bash all the time, but if someone says something about Fed you get angry. YOU worship Fed. Everyone else doesn't have to!

Injuries play no part in a player's career? OK! And you're misreading everything in your haste to be dismissive. I didn't say Canas was a great player. I was talking about threats to Federer, and Canas had a winning h2h over Fed before he beat him twice in a row. Guga, although five years older than him still came back from one of his surgeries and beat him too. So, in your estimation although both were off the tour due to injury and charges, if on the tour they would have had no impact? Hardly believable. Love Federer all you want, but get over the fact that everyone else doesn't. Anyway, glad to know you know me. Never ever seen you on the board!

Well i agree with The Truth on this subject....yes federer has been a very good player but he is certainly not the tennis God.....he had the easiest draw anyone could get at the pacific life open, and he still lost....even after the embarassing loss at AO....u would think he would have been fired up for this one......what i hate is that rafa has to play all these great players on his side of the draw, while fed gets an easy ride and still loses...atleast rafa is losing to good players like joker and tsonga...

Roger and his protected ranking. Playing losers every tournament while Rafa and Djokovic have to duke it out with the threats on a constant basis. Sure, I respect that!

Correct me if I am wrong, but does the first post seems to list excuses for why player's are not playing well?

On that basis you make the assertion that Federer competed among a depleted field.

Should he not be commended for not being injured during that time period, and not letting mental or physical turmoil get in the way of winning?

Can you blame Federer for other players lack of stamina and mental toughness?

I have no idea what you're referencing. Since I don't know exactly what you are referring to I couldn't possibly go back and find it amidst these thousands of posts. If indeed you are talking to me. I am not clear on that either.

I will tell you in one line that few others might have said or are perhaps suggesting:
You are a Nadal troll and , hence, have this attitude for Fed.

Question for you. Why aren't you guys bashing when you talk about a player other than Fed. You see the hypocrisy? Grow up and understand that everyone has a right to their opinion! Fed Idolator!

I had no idea that Roger's prime and career were over. I mean, isn't he the defending Wimbledon and US Open champion? Those that write off a great like Roger are just jumping on a bandwagon.

Quite amusing thread considering what,12 Slams and counting. Maybe he should take some time off like all the other pro's when they're injured or sick or not quite 100%; or maybe just start some bs gamemanship like a couple of his younger counterparts taking convenient timeouts midmatch for massages???,mystery treatment,STALLING, whenever the match is not going well. No,that would be too easy.

Somebody found it difficult to digest the fact when stated bluntly.
Btw, "Nad" in Fednad is for your boy Nadal. You see I like him too and a lot at that. And of course I have spoken against fed trolls too in the past. Point is you would miss those the moment you would see "fed" in the username. Now you Grow Up and you may do so without being in blue font

No, I don't have a problem with you being blunt. I have a problem with the name calling. I grew up in a large family and we never called each other names no matter how angry we got. It's just uncouth to me. My difficulty is in understanding people who have the nerve to try to censor someone else's opinion. You know, kind of like they're God, and have the right to tell other people what they can and cannot think. What they can post and what they can't, totally forgetting that it's a free board, a public forum, for the sole purpose of sharing opinions. Who you like, or don't like is of no interest to me. IMO, you can like whomever you want and dislike who you want to as well. I can't imagine thinking I can call you names because I don't agree with your opinion. I understand that everyone will not agree with me, and don't take offense when they don't. But here in the USA we have a law about freedom of speech! You might want to look it up, and then practice it!

Wrong gender. Don't do name calling. Never thought it was cute or funny, even when I was a child.

wrong gender? so you're saying you're a female?

just my opinion, but i sorta took this as your tone as kinda patronizing... and i realize you respect everyone's right to their own opinion...but the way you say it kinda sounds condescending. maybe that's not your intent... but then again, maybe you voicing your high standards are more insulting than the lighthearted name calling or trolling that goes around on these boards..

i hope that my lighthearted "bastid -_-" hardly counts as "uncouth" in your book... but who are you to tell me "don't do name calling?". it was you who pointed out the "freedom of speech" just 2 posts above..

i'm not trying to pick a fight...just trying to be blunt.

although i'll poke fun at the people who seem to be extremo fanboys of federer or nadal or whoever, my experience in tennis/life/on these boards are enhanced by the fact that i love Agassi so much. aren't you a diehard fan of something?. I hope everyone in these boards, regardless of how uptight or frivolous they may seem, lead very well balanced, enjoyable, satisfied lives in real life.

Yes, I am a female. You have a right to think my tone is condescending. I don't mean it to be, but I can't control what you think, which goes to your remarks regarding my high standards. Calling someone a *%%$% is lighthearted to you, not to me. I believe we can disagree without being disrespectful. Of course you can exercise your freedom of speech, but in that case I'd rather you didn't converse with me, as I find the practice appalling. Can't say that I believe the last part, I think you are trying to pick a fight and be funny at the same time. The other alternative will be to simply put you on my ignore list and that will be the end of it, because freedom of speech is one thing, but me having to be called names by you or anyone else just ain't in the books!

I always liked what Pete said, that the top 30 player is a better player than when he was in his prime, but that he had to beat more specialists (Baseline, all court, and S&V). Styles make fights, and tennis is no different. The greater vairety leads to the possibility of more boogeymen to matchup well with your weaknesses.

When an old Guga beat a very close to peak Roger at Roland Garros in straights, I started doubting Federer's clear superiority.

In the end, most dominant players have some help. Pete Sampras had super fast Wimbledon and U.S. Open courts to help him dominate with is serve. Rafter won the U.S Open twice in that era, and it was clearly helping big serves, and serve and volley games. That being said, I think it makes Agassi's career grandslam one of the greatest achievements out there. He recieved no help from weak eras and homogenous surfaces. Does that make Agassi the GOAT or the most dominant? No. I think the idea of the greatest tennis player ever is a myth for the most part, and the most dominant is just a product of circumstance.
