Regarding how strong this era is, Andy Murray is underrated here

Federer, NAdal and Djokovic are 3 best players at history without any doubt.

As much i like Pete Sampras and his game, lets be honest, regarding competition, versatility, condition, he is just a slightly below these 3 overall

Realize Murray was able to keep step with these players, just watch his masters1000 record, slams finals record, 2 wimby, 1 US open, olympic gold.

this player is much much better as his results, he just played at insane, insane ERa

I hope he will return back and steal one more wimby, imagine that

Internet folk who go out of there way to take the bold stance that Murray is not as good as Fedalovic rank among my least favorite. When put into perspective, his achievements are staggering.

It's amusing when people turn up clearly having only recently started following tennis and proudly proclaim "I never thought there was a big 4" as if there wasn't a time when Novak was on 1 slam to Federer's 16.

but you can't blame them because, based on achievements, he pales in comparison to them. You can't look back in 10 years and say murray had just as good of a career as djokovic. Yes he is a phenomenal but he is clearly behind the other three

Not only Murray, Hewitt is also underrated here, Atleast because of Wimbledon finals Roddick get recognition, Nalbandian because of 2007 paris, madrid and 2005 yec run, Davy because of his wins over Rafa and 2009 yec, but somehow Andy and Hewitt ,they both won above all things are very much underrated on this forum

He was also world number 1 when he got that big injury. Playing the best tennis of his life.

A lot of people like to say there was not such thing as the big 4, only the big 3. And I agree people are forgetting how damned good Murray was.

Everyone is underrated here. Murray is a great player and I hope he comes back healthy but, lets be honest, he is where he is. The other 3 are better. So, I wish him luck, many children and good health.

I'm just not sure if he could be again competitive. I hope so :). He was struggling with Djokovic, Fed and Rafa even when he was at his peak. Yeah, he won some but overall that was not good enough.

lol thank you for making the very bold statement exactly as I described it

No he doesn't. When he loses like Nadal in 2012 or Fed yesterday, then maybe.
He is not ready to be big champion.

Oh really? He wins 2 Wimbledons and a US Open as well as a whole host of other big titles but is not ready to be 'a big champion' according to you???

Good thread. We needed something to combat the serial overhyping of the past that has apparently been going around the tennis community. What better way to do it than sing the praises of Sir Andy "6-8 slams in any other era" Murray.

There's a special category of underratedness on here where Murray's concerned.

Not good enough for what?

absolutely!

and of course Tennis Vegeta (Djokovic) is lucky AF that Murray experienced his back problems!

he was starting to have Djokovic's number and would have been a big threat to his (and the others to an extent) slam count.

He would be sitting on 4 or 5 AO titles if not for one certain man. Just as it was with Fed at RG.
They all would be great. Best example is Djokovic slump after RG2016, Andy took care of himself and his legacy, got injured in the process, then Fed (especially him) and Rafa took their part of the cake in 2017 and first half of 2018.

He was, is and probably will be underrated... He is one of the greatest players in history who had bad luck to play in wrong era. Tennis miss him, I miss him, semi finals draws miss him...

From this distance his slam wins over Novak don't bother me so much, certainly less than those from Stanislas who ended with same number of slams, as example how "only slams matters" theory is bs... Murray was great and deserved those slams...

I forgot that it was "back problems", that got him separated from Lendl, thanks to whom he won all 3 of his grand slams, but what do i know?! After all Murray had back problems even back in 2012 right? LOL Or maybe because Murray was a crybaby and cruel Ivan was trying to make him work really hard and Murray thrown tantrums, which resulted in two being separated...LMAO

Great answer..

I also find his tennis more entertaining than djoko and Nadal..

Also beard is great nickname , most men looks 10x times better with the beard

I think Federer will improve a lot with the beard

I mean without the Big 3 Murray would be sitting at 20+ slams.

That is a gross exagerration. Probably more around 13-15

Pretty much for sures:

2008 U.S Open
2009 Wimbledon
2010 Australian Open
2011 Australian Open
2011 Wimbledon
2011 U.S Open
2012 Australian Open
2016 Australian Open
2016 French Open (although this is generous since despite beating Wawrinka in the semis he isnt certain at all to beat him if they play in the finals instead).

In addition to the 3 he won. So that is 12.

Then maybes, but not for sures:

2010 Wimbledon- toss up vs Berdych, who he had a hard time with at that point.
2013 Australian Open- toss up vs Wawrinka
2015 Australian Open- toss up again vs Wawrinka
2011 French- it is clay so numerous players have a chance, starting with Soderling and Monfils

He most likely wins 1 to 3 out of those 4, taking him to 13 to 15, with 16 the unlikely absolute max max. Now amongst bar none the weakest field in the ATP tennis history though. Can you imagine how terrible the field would be without the Big 3 (it sorely lacks depth and isnt considered by most people a strong field even with them) or Murray having the same number of slams as Sampras. Hilarious on both counts, sorry. I can see the argument he is better than a 3 slam winner though.

He was touted for much more then he actually achieved, that's the issue. Basically he had a brief period back when he was 20 and we were not sure if he is the future nr1 or just a loose cannon and he got a few good wins under his belt even getting to Federer who angrily but in retrospective truthfully said that Andy will not achieve a lot with such a defensive approach waiting for opponents mistakes ( I think he outlasted Fed in Dubai, prolly 07 ). That was some curse, looking back I think it was spot on and I'd go as far as saying that his style of play and training led to him underachieving compared to say Novak ( he was owning him during a good spell after initially struggling in the matchup ) and eventually led to all the injury troubles. So he is underrated but only because he fell well short of the expectations.

wrong!
Lendl actually did leave Murray ultimately because he decided to have back surgery against his advice!
Murray never fully recovered.

so get your facts straight.

Maybe you should get your facts straight. Murray had to have the back surgery because he was in so much pain. Lendl stayed with him for another 6 months and then abruptly left citing domestic issues as an excuse. After Murray had fully recovered Lendl asked to rejoin him and Murray agreed.

Murray beating djok in the wtf final was the biggest match for me. One of the few matches that actually mattered, they were playing for year end #1

So Murray gets overrated since he has been underrated?
In GS where it matters most, Murray is 2-7 vs. Nadal, 1-5 vs. Federer, 2-8 vs. Novak.
How can one honestly put his 3 GS next to the Big 3's 16-18-20 and think he belongs?
