Remember his name - Holger Rune Thread

The ATP side of Denmark has been "awful" in the Open Era, in singles. Best result is Kenneth Carlsen winning a tiebreak in AO against Stich, and of course the 3 tournaments he won.

A dane just won a Grand Slam on the WTA side, and the ATP shouldn't get another Pless, so therefore remember this name - Holger Rune.

Info

  • Full Name - Holger Vitus Nødskov Rune
  • Born - 29 April 2003 (16 years)
  • Birth place - Charlottelund, Denmark
  • Nationality - Danish
  • Began playing Tennis - 6 years old

Today he just won Junior Roland Garros, by only losing one set, and making a bagel after missing 2 MP on his own serve in 2nd set, so there is an indication of mental strength. He also played a Davis Cup match where he won a tiebreak 16-14, after being down 1-6.

I love this guys shirt. Two skeletons holding hands...another drinking a cold beer on the beach. Awesome!
I think I’ve seen that drawing before on an ancient Viking runestone.

Sorry...had to share that bad joke I heard while hanging out in Hades the last couple of days with our dear young pal Jannik Sinner. He made us proud though by qualifying in Stuttgart.

Just over a week on from his triumph in the boys' singles event at Roland Garros, Holger Rune will be taking part in next week's Challenger tournament in the city of Blois in central France. The Dane has been awarded a wildcard into the main singles event where, in the first round, he will play the 32-year-old Colombian Nicolas Barrientos.

First ever pro match! He also won a DC match last year as a 15-year-old.

No luck yesterday for Holger Rune in second-round action at the Challenger in Blois where he was beaten, 6-4, 6-3, by the no. 10 seed, Constant Lestienne.

An impressive start for Holger Rune in the boys' singles event at this year's Wimbledon where this week he has won his first two matches for the loss of just eight games to reach the last 16. The top-seeded Dane will next face the unseeded English player Anton Matusevich for a place in the quarter-finals.

A major surprise earlier today at the third major of the year where top-seeded Holger Rune was beaten, 6-4, 7-5, by the unseeded English player Anton Matusevich in the last 16 of the boys' singles event at Wimbledon.

A major wobble earlier today for no. 2 seed Holger Rune in the first round of the boys' singles event at Flushing Meadows where he narrowly beat the unheralded American qualifier Cash Hanzlik, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(5). Later on today the Dane takes on Dominic Stricker of Switzerland for a place in the last 16.

Actually I'm on campus and I just saw several kids wearing skeleton shirts. One had two skeletons interacting with each other in a friendly way and it wasn't even Nike. Seems like it's maybe some trend like Ed Hardy years back.

Won his first singles title last week in Klosters. Wins his first doubles title this week in Melilla. Was also a finalist in the singles tournament, losing to Timofei Skatov in 3. Back to back weeks of decent performances.

We've been calling him "Holger Rune" for short this whole time which just sounds like a solid name, but perhaps we should be calling him Holger Nødskov. From his wikipedia:

Holger Vitus Nødskov Rune (born 29 April 2003) is a Danish tennis player. Holger was born in Copenhagen and currently resides in Charlottenlund together with his mother Aneke Rune, father Anders Nødskov, and sister Alma Nødskov Rune. He trains at the Mouratoglou Academy since 2016

By the way, since that first title in Klosters, he has reached three additional finals, losing one and winning one, and this week reached his fourth to be played tomorrow.

He's doing quite well at the lowest rung of tennis.

29-10, 3 titles, 4 finals

Long way to the top though. Just broke into the top 500 this week.

Sounds like another deluded kid as he thinks he can break Rafa‘s record of 13 FO titles just because he won a junior FO. Or he is smoking something strong! He should let his tennis do the talking.

Into yet another M25 final, winning over Emilio Nava today. Today's win will put him at roughly 400th on the ATP, a win in tomorrow's final would put him at roughly 375th. He's getting close to qualifying for ATP Challenger main draws without the benefit of wild cards now.

17-year-old Holger Rune was undone by a 33-year-old Spanish fox in first-round action in Buenos Aires on Tuesday evening. Although the Dane led by a set and a break, he was slowly reeled in by his much more experienced opponent, Albert Ramos, who often had to do not much more than get the ball back in play and allow the hard-hitting Rune either to hit it out or into the net. It was something of a master versus pupil match and hopefully a lesson well learnt by the talented youngster.

Final score: 2-6, 6-4, 6-3

Well, Rune made his way through qualifying at the Chile Open and just won his first match at the ATP tour level today. He played another qualifier in the 1st round that was ranked #254, so it was a pretty fortunate draw.

His next match is against #2 seed Benoit Paire. I predict many racquets will be broken by both players.

More than a paire of racquets by the paire of players?

Will Benoit ru( n )e the day he embarked on his paireilous trip to Chile after loosing early in Argentina two a paire of players from The Pampas?

Will Holger live up one day to the Scandinavian legend Bjorn Rune Borg?

Baez is a good scalp. If I was a betting man, I'd place my money on him being the best young Argentine coming up, which is just to say it's a heckuva win.

I watched the highlights of the match online tonight. Paire acted about as professional as I expected - as in not at all. Good win for Rune though.

What is up with Rune's hair? The little mini-braids were as ugly as Paire's attitude.
