Beyond his actual playing career, he was a funny, witty, engaging commentator. I remember well when USO Open night session coverage was on USA Network and he'd team up with McEnroe. Always insightful and entertaining.

Great player. 1 Grand Slam, 2 finals, wonderful volley, very elegant on court. Borg, Connors, Vilas, McEnroe, Gerulaitis : the golden age of tennis. The best period ever.

Moment, when two big opponents (who had a sharp rivalry between them) embraced each other, because Gerulaitis was a friend for both.
Great to see. No matter how intense or sometimes even childish the animosities between these two may have been, in a moment like that you see that both are decent persons in their hearts and in the end everything isn’t too serious and there are much more important things. Too bad though that someone had to die for that.

Talking about Gerulaitis: He played before my time, but I’m sure he was a nice and funny guy. A few days ago I watched the 1981 WTF Final against Lendl. Gerulaitis had a 2-0 sets lead, got the first break in the 3rd and later had a MP in the 3rd set TB. But in the end Lendl won in 5 in an epic but not often talked-about match. And as a funny sidenote, in that match 2 times a cat (the same one and maybe an hour or so was in between) ran onto the field in Madison Square Garden during a point. Gerulaitis joked about it.

Probably Lendl's pet cat specifically trained to run on court and distract his opponent when giving Ivan a hard time. ;)

RIP Vitas.

@Mainad great post. It's good to remember those that get lost because they didn't achieve the greatness of peers, but loomed large in the game.

Haha, Gerulaitis said something like: "How can this cat always come to the field? We are in f.ucking Madison Square Garden after all. And why is it always on my side?"

But he was clearly smirking.

Great photo...never saw this before. Connors opened up about Vitas in his book. It was fascinating. He could be an a-hole on court, but he really cared about the guy. And, despite the antics, Mac and Connors respected one another....Borg as well. Maybe a little less true with Ivan....

turned out to be untrue, more's the irony

Borg did

18s clearly a bridge too far though, Borg too scared to even try...

Chrissie was drinking a bottle of Coke with a straw and she took the straw out and said "This is Jimmy Connors" and held the bottle up and said "And THIS is Vitas Gerulaitis!" She wasn't always such a priss.

I don't think she ever said which one was which. That's open to speculation. :)
