Removing Staples From Butt Cap

I have a Wilson racket and I am having a very hard time removing the staples from the cap so I can shave down.
I have tried an Awl, tiny screw driver et.c
I am trying not to destroy the cap.

any suggetions

i had good success using small flat head screw driver, i wigggle the screw driver slowly under the staple first, but i think you could also use a pointed knife to lift it a little first, enough to get the screw driver under
you might have to use some force to jam the knife under the staple in some cases, which is not ideal but then again necessary sometimes, and yet still ok, because the grip is gonna cover that up anyway
but like you said, try not to damage it too much

I did this several times with my old PS 85.

Yes, start with a knife blade, then a very thin screwdriver, then needle-nose pliers.

It's not that hard and the buttcap protects the foam pallet.

When you start to shave down make a sanding block out of a 2x4. Make it 18" long. A longer surface is easier to hold horizontally level when sanding down the foam pallet. If you use something like a wood rasp or short sand paper, you could change the angle of the facet of the pallet--or screw up the bevels.

Best of all is to use a fixed rotary sander in a woodshop. With this it's easy to get it right.

Pliers (preferably needle-nose).

do you use the same staple when you stick the buttcap back on the racket? do you just push the staple back in or do you need to do something else?

I try to use the same staple. Push it in gently. Then at the end, tap it with a hammer.

ive been able to use a standard staple-gun
some racquets have metal handles, so you will have to find the hole where the staple can go through, but other racquet handles have just hard foam and stapling is not a big problem
taping down the staple with a hammer and screw driver point has worked for me, just enough to make it flush and not be able to tell too much once the overgrip gets put on
