I dropped by my local tennis shop to pick up some grips since I'm playing tomorrow and my grips were worn out.

I usually play with Gamma Hi-Tech replacement grips and don't bother with overgrips at all, but then I stumbled onto Wilson's Pro Soft overgrip and it it just felt so great that I had to pick up a pack to try out - inspite if the bright yellow color - ugh.

So the question/survey is, what do you go with? Replacement grips or overgrips and why?

I use overgrips. A lot easier and cheaper. 1 overgrip is equal to $1 and a good replacement grip say is $8

1 overgrip lasts for 1 week. 8 weeks = $8

Replacement grip needs replacing every 2 weeks or so

haven't found a replacement grip that even comes close to doing what Tourna Grip is able to do.

Are you serious?! My overgrips last a whole month at the very least.

leather replacement and tourna on most of my sticks. on others where i dont bother with a replacement, i go with three wilson pros.

I am definitely a fan of overgrips. My current racquets came with white grips. Definitely would get dirty too easily. I am a fan of the Prince DuraTred overgrips. Must be the tire tread pattern :)

They do provide good traction but sometimes I wish they would come in colors other than just black.

How do you guys get the overgrip to stay on? I use Babolat VS overgrips. I put it on my AeroPro drive becuase the grip size is 4 3/8 and like 4 1/4 so decided to try it out. After like 20 min. it kept slipping off and had to change racquets. So how do you guys make it stay on?

as soon as i can i replace the original grip with overgrips,
1 i am used to the yonex supergrap
2 i can custommize the size of it to my hand
3 its cheaper/easier to replace the overgrip then the original grip, specially if oyu play tennis alot, then you are gonna go through these things like hotcakes

Kap, I thought you guys don't use the replacement grip just the overgrip. You put the overgrip directly on the handle. That's what I tried to do. But over an actual grip is way easier.

i use overgrips but i think it matters what replacement grip is under because different grips have different feelings..plus the bevels..

by far the best overgrip in the biz is the Wilson pro overgrip white. Amazing feel and durability.

I have never had the same results with any colored grips obviously due to the dye used.
used to be a tourna grip fan but the white pro's are better overall.

There are some guys who'll use an overgrip directly on the bare racquet handle (because they want a thinner grip or more solid feel), but I'm certainly not one of them. Overgrips are really intended to be wrapped over an existing grip to add tackiness or absorbency, or even a bit of extra cushioning, but they don't have anywhere near the cushioning that you'd get with a soft replacement grip.

I'd personally find it too harsh to play with just an overgrip without an actual grip underneath it, but if that's what you were going for, I'd think that some double-sided tape on the bare racquet handle might help to keep it in place.

i have 3 overgrips on my racquet, it gives me the desired thickness and it feels good to me
the 2 inner overgrips are usually old once or used ones
3 overgrips will still show plenty of the vevels everyone seems to be concerned about
the origional grips are coming out with indentations on them, making tem fell bad when you place over grip on them
i think it all comes down to preference though, and acheiving your proper confortable grip size, thats why you see people using leather grips at times, go figure!

Yes, grip feel is subjective, so you need to experiment alittle. Leather alone feels great, but might feel alittle harsh. Leather with an overgrip might feel better. A cushiongrip with an overgrip is the most shock-absorbing combo. Try em all.

Well, I played this weekend with Wilson Pro Soft overgrip over my gamma hi-tech ad I love the soft overgrip. I'm now an overgrip convert. Only thing is, the only color they had in the store was yellow or lime green. even TW only has yellow, green, or orange - what's up with that????

Definitely overgrips...they are far more absorbent and don't get slick nearly as fast. Plus, you can easily change an overgrip during a change-over. It's a little harder to do that with a replacement grip (a professional job at least).

well...when the white grip gets all nasty and brown time to throw it away and get a new overgrip. I wish I could've voted that I replace both grips. Somehow my replacement grip gets really thin and worn out with an overgrip on top. I replace the replacement grip about twice a year and replace my overgrips almost every other match.

replacement grips suck. when i got m new racquets, i right away put on some wilson pro overgrips. i get blisters from replacement grips. plus the overgrips feel the best.

That's a good practice to maintain. The replacement grips get compressed over time and need to be replaced (like the insoles of shoes...they don't necessary wear out, but as soon as the cushioning goes, your feet start to hurt). As the replacement grip gets more and more compressed, your grip gets smaller, and you may find yourself squeezing the grip too hard, which can lead to injury (or just not hitting the ball as well).
