Restring Cross only?

I just started stringing my racquet.

Both jobs use poly main and cross syn gut

First string job I used poly 57 lbs and syn gut 54. Stringmeter got Main is 48 lbs and Cross is 35 lbs .

Second job I useds poly 57lbs and syn gut 60 because someone here said to increase tension for syn gut by 4 to 6. Stringmeter got poly 57 and syn gut around 40/38. The cross tension dropped 20lbs holy crap.

I played the first string job and it's literally unplayable. My Backhand can't get the ball over.

I have a tourna 150-cs that might help in restringing the cross. Can I replace only the cross?

The poly main is this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006I36L1K?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

The syn gut is this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086WNR68G?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Restrung 1st job cross at 53 and got 40.

Update: I think I got it. The stringer clamp slipped (due to me fidgeting with it) on the first string job which explains the low main. The syn gut has to be strung 6 pounds higher. The stringmeter read the cross 13 less than desired tension because it doesn't have the main friction contributing to the tension unlike the stringer. Here is the math:

1st job
48 clamp slipped
35 syn gut is less 6 to 4 pounds. 54-35-6= 13

2nd job
57 clamp fixed
40 syn gut. 60-40-6= 14

1st job redo cross
53 poly. 53-40 = 13

Now I can at least make sense of this. i figure the previous owner sold this to me for cheaper because he got this same problem and decided to ditch it instead of figuring the machine out.

Looking at the video comment like the comment below basically sum up to the stringmeter can't get the true tension. I just want to make sense of the inconsistent tension results despite using the same strings and same technique. Now I know. One of the video comment mention stringmeter would get accurate main but as an example 10 less for cross so seems about right with my result. In the video he stringed both at same tension but get 5 less on the cross.

What I got from that video is string both main and cross at same tension because ultimately the cross will be a few pounds short and that my stringmeter read the cross around 13 pounds less than desired tension.

To sum it up:
1) Stringmeter on main is fairly accurate.
2) Stringmeter on cross is not accurate and differ each one. On video he got 5 pounds less. One of his example is 10 pounds less. I got 13 pounds less.

Generally not the best idea, as it puts uneven pressure on your racquet. That being said, it's your racquet, so do what your want. If you do it, just make sure to mount the racquet on your stringing machine BEFORE you cut out the crosses. That will protect the racquet as much as possible. I would also recommend tying of the crosses on themselves rather than on the poly mains; makes it easier to cut out since you don't have to untie the knots. I'd also recommend weaving the opposite direction with the second string job.

Some people think you can drop a brand new engine in a run down 1993 Honda Accord and end up with a new car when in actuality you end up with a run down 1993 Honda Accord with a brand new engine.

Are the strings no good? Or is my technique no good.

You could string a racquet a day and have a new question every day regarding that Stringmeter. It’s ok for gauging string tension loss over the days/weeks where numbers mean absolutely nothing, as long as you write them down on paper and follow the downward spiral of readings, other than that I never found the one I had to be worth anything. I’d send that thing on a one-way trip to the landfill…you’ll learn by feel alone whether it’s time to re-string any given racquet. And I’d get off the ‘string crosses only’ theory as well.

String again with poly as cross this time at 53 and the tension is still around 40.

I tried a new thing. I drop the drop weight a little to get it level a little faster but I think I might have stretch out the string.

I kinda trust string master because it measured my second string job 57lb main at 57lb or maybe that's a one off.

I will just try the new string job and see if it performs up to standard.

Are you saying you forced the arm down to level?

That is probably not a great idea. Now if you have a small child you can keep them entertained while you string by having them use it as a rocking horse.

LOL.

The drop weight takes what seems like forever leveling to the horizontal then drop even more after releasing the clamp. Sigh.

I guess just have to practice and leave the bar a little up so after the clamp release the bar will level out.

Alright so I have a racquet that's been strung by a friend four weeks ago that should be around 50 for kevlar main and poly cross. I play every other day for 3 hours sessions in doubles. Checked with stringmeter and got around 30 for both.

Either the stringmeter is not accurate or those strings lost alot of tension.

Well just learned cross most of the time has few pound less than the desired tension because of the friction against the main. So cross will most of the time few pound less.

Both Kevlar and poly lose tension quickly. There’s a lot of string to string friction between Kevlar and poly so not only is the tension low in the crosses because of friction it’s also lower in the Kevlar Mains. The Stringmeter is not as accurate with some high friction strings. If you’re worried about the tension dropping I would prestretch the strings especially the kevlar.

Not one person has mentioned Kevlar in the entire thread. He is stringing poly and syn gut.

@enishi1357 , what is stopping you from mounting up your racket, cutting out the crosses and restringing the crosses? It is your racket, your risk. Just because I have done it half dozen times on a Prince Neos 1000 does not mean you should. But the times I have done it I detected no ill effect to the racket.

However, unless money is really tight restring the mains too. Seems to me 3/4 of the time spent stringing a racket is stringing the crosses, mains just take a few short minutes.

I've tried Ashaway Kevlar mains x poly (4G) crosses. That set up is too dead on arrival for me and my 68 yr old arms/joints. However, Ashaway Kevlar mains with Ashaway Zyex crosses works pretty well in some rackets for me.

Right, and I just checked and the kevlar is like $7 a half set or something. I agree just restring the whole thing. After all the string job is month old.

Tested the restrung racquet with poly on both main and cross. Much better on groundstroke, tho lacking a little power, unlike the first string job with syn gut on cross. However made a few double faults to the net in a single service game so definitely lacked power. Funny I got more power from an old strung racquet kevlar main tensioned 30 then a freshly restrung poly cross around 50. I prob just have to get used to the string. I switch back to the kevlar racquet just in time to win the set haha.

Either syn gut is not for me or the $24 reel suck big time or I haven't got use to it or all of the above.

For $24 I wonder if I should return it. I will play test the second strung job first I guess.

A $24 reel is exactly that…a $24 reel. I’d say don’t throw in the towel yet on the syn gut theory, for $20 or so more try a reel of Gosen OG Sheep syn gut in whatever flavor color and gage suits your needs. It’s a pretty good syn gut string still on the cheaper side in the syn gut world.

Plus being a new stringer it sounds like a great option for OP to string with cheap synthetic gut.... check with your string gizmo.... cut out.... restring with cheap synthetic gut.... check with gizmo and compare... cut out... etc.

I have no clue as to where you’ll find Gosen OG Sheep on this planet for $20 a reel.

“for $20 or so more”… as I quote myself. That means in addition to, or on top of, your initial $24 investment. Here at TW it runs $55 a reel...that’s why I kinda threw in the “or so” factor. When I bought several reels of it in different gauges and colors and I can’t remember where from at the moment, it was about $45 a reel if not mistaken.
