Restring Zero. New string release.

Delivered 2 sets of this new string today, 1.23 and 1.27 gauge. The brand is called ReString and this is their first string released called Zero.
6-sided polyester that promises great spin and durability. It's price is 17€ per set which sets the bar quite high for a newcomer to the industry.
I'll play with it this month and share my feedback.

Following. I saw these on ks, and saw the 100% focus of the page was the environment, with no string information. Plus it sort of seemed a little weird to me that the eco friendly part of the product was only the packaging, not the string itself. Everytime I cut strings out and throw them in the trash I think there must be a way to recycle this plastic, and wish this product was doing just that, or something similar with their raw materials.

@HypnoticLasagna I totally agree with what you say. The only string that says it's made from recycled material is the Isospeed Second Serve. I hope I can get my hands on that sometime.
I really liked the
Stringlab Italia cardboard made packaging.
ReString's environmental direction is just on the packaging and some 5% money from purchases going somewhere that has to do with the environment...

I would buy more into Isospeed's promo that has with the string itself. Packaging and rerouting some percentage from sales towards environmental projects doesn't work for me and I have a Bachelor and MSc on Geology saying this.
I just posted about this string here because it's a new one.

I like the color
But agree with others, misleading to be about the environment but only with your packaging.
It definitely seems like polyester could be recycled. There's already a company recycling plastic from the ocean.

@Chairman3 I totally agree with you and everyone else's opinion. As a Geologist I know some things about the environment and recycling.
I just wanted to share the news about this new tennis string/brand. All I care is about how it plays.

@HypnoticLasagna I've just finished playing with the: Isospeed Rexxxer and the Tier One Black Knight. I've just strung the new MSV Swift on the Diadem Nova and maybe will string the Diadem Elevate with the Diadem Pro-X, since it's been a long time since I last played with a Diadem string and I owe them big time for all the gear they've sent me.
So, after these two I've mentioned above, I plan to play the ReString Zero 1.23 on the Diadem Nova and will decide what other string I'll string my Elevate with.
I suppose will be the second part of October.

Its interesting that quoted IsoSpeed second serve, I saw their website as well and over a year ago heard about this innitiative but have been nothing since ☹ Has anyone heard any news lately?

also for ReString I found this link about string details

Hey everyone, this is my first post I wanted to share some strings I came across earlier in the summer. The brand is called ReString and they are relatively new to the world of tennis.

I was looking for a new string that could give me good power/spin but also maintain comfort. What I love about ReString is that it really maintains a fresh feel pretty much until it string breaks. I play competitively at a 5.5 (UTR 11) level and I would highly recommend them

I would love to hear others' thoughts on their favorite strings and why!

I don't know how to add my own image so here their website

@qmnjlo I've got 2 sets of the Zero, 1.23 and 1.28. The 1.23 gauge is the next string I'll be playing with.
@antony No code. You just add the string to your shopping cart and when you go at your cart the discount is calculated. Now, it's 11.20$ instead of 16$.

The marketing makes me leery of the actual quality of the strings, but I will buy one set only because I like the color.
I'd be more skeptic about their marketing approach.
Don't want to put a cat among the pigeons but I always find it highly suspicious when a new user is mainly focused on posting about a new tennis brand.
Heck, the OP says that it's his first post while it is not. Even more so the OP's first post was in a thread about exactly this particular brand. Why create a new thread? The old one burned out too quick? Have to spark some new interest?

A shaped poly that maintains a fresh feel until it breaks? Hmm.

It looks like there are more features of the packaging than the string itself. I should probably try it out though.

Yeah, I immediately discredit these posts, even if I’ve been wrong once or twice.

Update: Played for two hours last night with the string. I didnt immediately fall in love with it, or at all. I think it may have needed this 2 hrs as a break in, but we will see. Initial thought is that it felt stiff and felt a bit jarring on my arm which I havent experienced in awhile. I was bit suprised as I figured a light blue string would be softer. I got good spin as expected as if I was playing with hyper g, or another hex poly. Power felt average, I didnt spray any balls that I wasnt expecting to, was able to play consistently and had a good couple of sets with it. If I had to rank my blue strings as of this moment in time with 2 hours on it: Confidential 2.0 (Hex), Toroline Super Toro, Toroline Ether, Restring Zero, Yonex PTP. I'll report back when I can loosen the bed a bit more, as of right now.. 55.713/100

Apparently ReString had a Kickstarter for $2k back in August. Is that really all the runway you need to start a string company?

Where is Zero manufactured? It's not mentioned on the website at all; only hint may be that it's from Asia (I'm guessing most likely Taiwan) based on how they addressed costs in the Kickstarter.

If this is basically a silicon-coated Hyper G/Confidential with the long tension maintenance and playability duration then I might give it a try.

What's up with the weird gauge offerings?

Got to hit with the Zero today. Actually, it plays quite well. Spin and control quite good. Then I switched to my other racket which I play with the Luxilon Alu Power - first time playing with a Luxilon string and I was blown away! Unfair to play these next to each other.

I'm into 3.5+ hours now. The snapback is very, very good, posted a story on my Instagram for people to see.
I really get good spin and good control out of it with the Nova.
I hit very nice forehands with it.
The power level where I like it, medium powered.
Overall, so far, encouraging impressions.

I got a set of 1.23 of this string. Will try it out in the next week or so. Coming from 1.20 Confidential so I assume I'll drop a couple of pounds due to the slightly thicker gauge.

Snapback is insane after 5+ hours. I'll play once more before cutting it out and move to my next playtest. I'll share my full feeback here.
For now, at 24kg on the Diadem Nova: great spin assistance and very good control when hitting with spin. I've experienced some small difficulties when hitting flat shots, inconsistency of depth. But it's an aggresively shaped string and I think it's oriented towards spin-hitters.
I'll be back for more next time.

Just cut this out of my racquet, here's my official-unofficial playtest comments:
String: Restring Zero, 1.23 gauge
  • Tension: 48 lb
  • Regular string set up: Toroline Super Toro (48#) or HyperG Soft (48#)
  • Racquet: Diadem Elevate FS
  • Control/Power: String is definitely a control oriented poly due to the shape. I didnt find any balls sailing on me (unexpectedly anyway!) due to the string, felt like I could play my game as planned. Power for me was slightly above average, much like anything else I have hit with in the last few months (soft shaped polys). I'd say the same control as HG, maybe some extra pop on the shots, but I would need to compare side by side.
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?): RSZ was extremely stiff for me during my first 2 hour session. After that it felt like the strings settled a bit and softened to what I expected the string to feel like. Good response & comfortable, for me, sort of what I expect when hitting a light blue string these days.
  • Spin: Above Average spin for me, not as much as a 4 sided string though. Comments from hitting partners were along the lines of "Not jumping up any more than usual." [Grain of salt: I am still in the process of figuring out how to add spin and increase the apex of the trajectory. I'd say I hit with an above average spin for a 4.0 comparing myself to my team and others I have played against.]
  • Playability Duration: I'd say I got 14 hours out of this string, but I played with it until 16 hours. Again after the initial 2 hr breakin, they performed great and consistently until the 14 hour mark. As we approached 16, I definitely noticed balls sailing and reduced comfort. (I typically dont break strings, I play until they feel dead). What I liked most is that I found that RSZ didnt really notch and had extremely good snapback throughout my testing.
  • Tension findings: I personally would go up a few lbs. I have another set and will probably string it at 52lbs.
  • List any additional thoughts (optional):
    1) I do have another set of this string, I am interested in how it performs on my next test, but that wont be for awhile. Nothing really stood out to me at this time, and they didnt outperform over other strings I have used, other than duration (I typically get 10-12 hrs out of stings). I also had such a struggle stringing these, slipped thru my clamps and thru the dropweight clamp. When I play with these again I will give to my old stringer to deal with to make sure I am getting a consistent experience.
    2) I dont really like the marketing of the string, especially considering the only reason they want you to buy these strings is because of the biodegradable packaging, shipping vessel, and X amount of the sale goes to a climate initiative. While thats all great and good, most brands have cardboard packaging, and are headed in this direction. I would have also expected them to not use a ziptie to bundle the string, but alas, it came with a ziptie. I am excited to see where this new brand goes and I really hope they can meet their journey goals. But I would call them the first "sustainable string BRAND" not sustainable "String". As conservationalist it is nice to see a company trying to take a relatively terrible sport for the environment and make it a bit better. And lastly, I'd like to see a reel available for order in cardboard reel box, versus a big box of several sets of strings. What I did find nice, was a handwritten note from the company in my package.
3)Full bed of this was great! No real need for a round cross IMO.
    4) Color is amazing :D!

5) As I was writing this I also went back the website, it looks like they have more information now talking about the string (I may have missed this previously anyway)!
Here is the company's string ratings, versus how I would rate in red:
strings.jpg
TLDR: good string, give it a shot if you are looking for a 6 sided poly with excellent snapback and durability.

If the RSZ team is reading: I'll be following your journey closely, and am looking forward to playing with the string again to compete against my current favorites.

@HypnoticLasagna I am into 5hours with it. I'll play once more and then cut it out. I only care about sharing honest feedback about how I feel about (Comfort, Stiffness, Power, Ball Bite/pocketing, Spin Potential/assistance and Overall Feel). So, far the ReString Zero 1.23 has performed better than I initially thought it would. I say this because during stringing it felt very stiff and the edges very sharp and had some slippage to deal with the first mains, but made the proper adjustments and got it right quickly.

What surprised me the most is the snapback effect being so great. That really translates into very good spin (not a spin monster like the Gamma Jet 17 was for me).
I hit several drop shot volleys and got great backspin. Every underspin shot, especially the backhand slice from the baseline was great. I'm getting much better with my technique of course.

I have it strung at 53lbs (24kg), did you experience any inconsistency on flat shots? Me, when testing some flat shots, had some of them landing further and others shorter than I wanted to. It could be my flat hitting being executed wrong, because I always put some descent amount of spin.
Power delivery was just as much as I want to. Allowed me to take big cuts without fear of overshooting.

No inconsistency for me at all with these strings. Any inconsistency I can relate to bad technique or being tired and lazy. Only at the end of life I had issues, but that's the case for any string. Agree with you on your other points though! I am not very good at underspin shots, so I cannot comment there, typically results in me jamming my racket into my knee or shin. RSZ has not helped my knee or shin feel any better when I whack my racket into them! Maybe my tennis academy will teach me soon.

Definitely lower powered hex polys out there that I would feel safer taking bigger swings at the ball. But currently I am trying to swing my arm less and let my hips do the talking.

@HypnoticLasagna for backhand slices from the baseline just make sure you:
- make contact with the ball next to you (not in front)
- at contact lean forward
- keep your grip on the racket super solid with a 90 degree angle from start (racketface behind your head) to finish
- go across your body and racket head pointing down at the end

I've seen coaches teaching it differently: open racket face and the hand going foreward, not across. That only works on low APPROACH backhand slices! Everybody is wrong on this (yes, I said it).

Just go to 12kgp YouTube channel and watch what Roger Federer does. Believe me, it's super easy to execute. GO ACROSS YOUR BODY with a very steady grip (don't let your wrist relax at all).

Hmmmm... it looks like and sounds like from the reviews it is Mayami Strings Tour Hex. Anybody have a scrap piece they could send me to compare the two?

restring-zero-1-23-review.jpg

ReString Zero 1.23 (24kg)

Rough textured. 6 sharp edges. Beautiful light blue electric colour.

Baseline:

Right away it gave me the impression of a stiff pro-player oriented string.

Forehands: medium power/penetration that allowed / demanded the use of my own power, but without the fear of overshooting. I'm settled with over medium stiff strings, so for me this one was in my comfort zone, but definitely on the stiffer side of the spectrum. The ball sinked just a little bit into the stringbed which I found very responsive. Hitting with topspin I could find every angle very predictably. Missed very few shots out of-bounds or at the net. Very easy to hit the cross-court on the run. On flat forehands depth wasn't always predictable. Quite a few shots landed either shorter or farther than I planned to, but being a shaped string I was expecting this to be the case.

Backhands: both 1hbh and 2hbh when hit with some top-spin could find small targets at all angles on the baseline or towards the sidelines. Better than flat ones with which I had some issues landing the ball at the exact depth I aimed for. Where it really made an impression was the backhand slices hit at different heights! Many rpms produced on my slices from the baseline. The ball would stay low and long. Approach slices (steady and slightly open racketface moving forewards to hit a volley next) the ball had a sligh higher launch angle than round-shaped strings. It's been the case for me so far, to hit much more effecient approach slices with round strings. With shaped ones I execute the baseline slices much better though.

Netplay: great directional control and hit many drop-shot volleys with lots of backspin.

Conclusions:

For flat-hitters who want to give it a try, I'd recommend starting at 23kg. Struggling to find any drawback, I'll just mention the slight inconsistency in depth on the flatter shots. At a lower tensions I'd feel a little more confident with these, but I'd prefer to make the proper adjustments, rather than sacrificing the great overall feel on spin shots. One of the best strings to execute the finesse shots. It performed really well for my level and frequency of playing, the durability is top-notch. I will try the 1.28 gauge on one of my 98 sq inch rackets. The snapback is insane! Really satisfied with this first string from ReString.

Well I did a shallow dive into the company and string. Only the packaging is recycled paper, and the string itself does not use any recycled materials, unlike the 2nd String from Isospeed. The way sales are structured, each packet is 12m/40ft string, and bulk buying means 5x or 16x spools of 12m/40ft, with no big reels offered. That means 16x40=640ft @ $210, which $/ft puts the ZERO into premium string category. The "sustainable" marketing is nonsense, since a spool of 12m/40ft would leave me with excess of 1.5m/5ft each time I restring. Multiple that by 16x and you can restring at least 2 restrings with the excess leftover in a reel of 640ft. So even IF the tension and playability is marketed as extra durable, the wasted excess is already nullified whatever "sustainability" claim.
So how does it play? I tried the Zero 1.23 mm full bed as a test. Dropped tension by 3 lbs because it seemed stiff. I was right to do so. The bite is less than the similarly colored Polytour Spin 1.20, which I also tested with Poly Tour Fire, and I dropped tension by 4lbs for that string. It's a heavier string, about 0.5g heavier than my usual 1.15/1.18/1.2mm mains, with 1.2mm cross strings. It's an average power string and above average bite.
Durability: Tension via app showed tension dropped 6.7lbs from 47.5 to 40.8 lbs after the 1st 2.5 hrs. Then it has a flatter tension drop of 1ish lbs every hour of hitting. All the polys I play with, V-Square, V Torque Tour, and Cyclone crossed with PTF, will drop tension of 7-8 lbs (as measured by the app Tennis Vibes), then the drop hits near the elasticity base and drops under 1lbs an hour. The 1.23mm doesn't notch as quickly as Vsquare or V-torque, but about the same as the 1.15mm 18L Cyclone, but the hexagon shape feels "harder", so slightly lower wear isn't surprising. Still at 6 hours, it's a little bit better wearing than 1.20mm Poly Tour Spin.
Playability: It's a muted, stiff and denser feeling string, plays like the Poly Tour Spin in terms of feel. The stiffness and deadness makes the ball rebound quickly, so for me it was good for swinging fast, but slices, volleys felt dead. Spin was good, but that's more me swing up on the string, because of the stiffness. But bite is less than 1.2mm Poly Tour Spin, which combined with Poly Tour Fire as a cross, was very good, and that had more spin. Power isn't the the priority, even with the stiffness. It plays more like a precision control poly. It plays well as a control poly, but to me, not worth the price as a main string, because I restring every other week due to breakage, and buying 16x40ft reels instead of a 660ft reel @ $210, which would allows 19 restrings for my sticks, makes no sense to me, given other strings perform as well if not better, and comes out cheaper, and higher utilisation before disposal. So yeah, a no go unless they start making 660ft+ reels at a decent price.

I have some good time on this string now and after being skeptical initially, I'm impressed by the performance. Felt stiff going in but didn't play that way at all. I found it to have more comfort on off centers than HG 17 as a reference. Notching was less than Hawk Power at 6 hours even though it's shaped. Balanced feel and launch for a shaped string of this kind.

I emailed the company and asked more about the string details and supposedly reels are on the way. It's not easy to enter the string game as a small guy, but it was nice to get a long email right back from one of the owners - something you can't get from the big guys.

Support for a new product that's excellent or even very good is necessary. But strings like any other thing, are personal to a point. We all know polys lose elasticity, and then becomes stiff, and that process is somewhat how steep the tension curve drop is. Unfortunately Zero isn't what I personally consider outstanding. It does well on the tension maintenance curve, being gentler on the decline, but everything else is at best above average. I'd guess the stiffness is around HyperG 16Lg, Still, as a deader poly, stiffer poly, the premium demanded isn't justified for me. Others may feel differently.

What's interesting is many players shell out $20/set on ALU and RPM etc, yet at the same time these premium tier strings are also very well known for their downsides by rec players.

You make a good point – strings are very personal, and if this brand delivers home on their sustainability, or becomes that go to brand in that space, they may have an audience of people that are willing to go along for the ride.

Aside from the string itself I think it will be more about building a brand that can connect with customers in new ways, on a personal level.

Well the bigger names have a few things going for them, the biggest being sponsored endorsed players, which like it or not, gets more sticks strung. I never liked RPM Blast, didn't mind RPM Rough but found better alternatives for 30% less. It is also made in EU, for more perceived "quality", while automatically more expensive due to material, taxes and labor costs, and that automatically rises that quality perception. Alu Power is made in China, has lots of copies, and for me, the pro endorsements. I like it for an hour. But that's not what recreational players who care about price/performance prioritize, except maybe as a match day string.
The ReString "sustainability" claim isn't unique. Many other companies use recycled paper and all sorts of "gimmicks" to greenwash. Polymer strings are just not easily recyclable based on their chemical makeup. Funnily the plastic type numbers game was actually available before they even started recycling plastics in earnest.
I think if a company makes strings that perform to a certain standard, they will be somewhat successful. Tier One came in and gained recreational player interest. I didn't like their Cube, Firewire, Ghostwire strings either, and their strings run in the low middle price range. So is price going to be a factor in success for the small players? Seems so.

Hi guys! I can’t really say anything because they sponsor me but I’m going to drop this discount code for you guys. “Taka10” for 10% off. I switched from Rpm blast to zero. I restring before every practice and match so I can’t say anything at all to try and convince you guys to switch but I haven’t had any issues switching from Rpm to zero. It reminds me of hyper g in a sense that it’s deader feeling and great spin but I thought zeros more comfortable and predictable. Don’t get me wrong, I love the zero strings and the color of it. I do earn a small commission at no extra cost to you guys but I love what they’re doing for tennis and the environment. Hope you guys enjoy
