Review of Brady Tennis Camp

This is my personal review of the Brady Tennis Camp that I just participated in this weekend:

I love tennis, but did not want to spend a small fortune to go to a resort tennis camp just for a weekend. I was primarily attracted to the Brady Tennis Camp due to the great value ($250 for the weekend) as well as the convenient location in Carson, CA which is near my home in LA. I can honestly say that it exceeded my expectations.

All of the instructors were genuinely nice and concerned about improving my game. I had been to other types of camps and there always seems to be one instructor either with a "chip on the shoulder" attitude or an "I don't really care" attitude, but this was Not the case at the Brady Camp. You had a good mix of very experienced veteran instructors as well as young gun guys with some serious tennis skills all trying to help you improve your game. There were about 5 instructors with almost 30 campers. The last thing I want to do is pay money to an instructor who is a bit of a jerk, or to someone that is not knowledgable enough to help your game.

The level of play is good for beginners up to a 4.0 NTRP. I'm a 4.0-4.5 and I ended up winning the advanced group singles and doubles round robin competition. They end up breaking you out into groups by advncd, intermed, or beginn skill level. I am a 36 year old male who plays singles tennis once a week, and I was really hurting bad after the first day of drills and match play. I think most all of the campers did a better job of pacing themselves than I did. Even my good friend bagged out of attending the second day because he was too sore to play. I need to toughen him up, hahaha. I just took some advil and used a lot of bengay on the second day. It's obvious to say that this is a great workout, but then again you only get out of it what you put into it.

The venue was at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. They have a very nice tennis area that is only open for USTA use, no personal use, so the courts are in very good condition. It's too bad they don't open up the green clay courts for the tennis campers to try out. The whole Home Depot Center campus is extremely very safe and clean, however if staying at a hotel in the area, I'd definitely recommend staying closer to the beach areas like Redondo Beach or Torrance, as Carson is not a very desirable city. I'm a local to the area so I stayed at home. The Brady Camp's main venue is at the UCSB campus.

The average tennis campers seemed to range in age from 30-60 years old with a fairly close mix of men vs women. Most everyone was very friendly and sociable.(although they could do some simple mixer to help introduce people to each other) Most all the guys were really cool, and I ended up finding a new hitting partner in the group.

All in all if you're looking for a great no frills tennis workout with some very quality instruction, it will be very hard to beat the value of the Brady Tennis Camp.
