Murray vs the French population. This can play out two ways:

1) The moment gets to Monfils, starts slow and therefore the crowd can't get involved. Bit of an anti-climax like Tsonga v Djokovic. Murray see's him off in straights.

2) Monfils comes out all guns blazing, takes first set, Murray plays like junk and starts to curse but does fight back in 2nd/3rd sets however he does lose - giving the French population a front page headline.

I suspect 1...

If Murray plays the way he did today - Murray in 3 max 4 sets, when he's in this kind of form he's just far too consistent for Monfils.
 
I think Monfils can take him. The French crowd will stop him from having lapses (unlike Verdasco) and should inspire him. He played some great tennis against GGL.
 
I cant see anything other than Murray in 3. He'd have to be playing extremely badly to lose this at all and the french crowd will be affecting Monfils more than Andy due to expectation.
 
Tough one, typically id say Murray but Monfils was not pushed today and should be healthy and have the crowd.
 
Monfils with a mostly aggressive game with a penchant for theatrics beats a higher margin mentally reformed player in 3/4? Doesnot compute.
 
Ok tennis pro so they aren't the best pics I've seen of him but oh boy does he look good in Paris this week. Yum yum! :smile:
 
Murray playing well will win in 3 or 4 sets, regardless of which Monfils turns up.

I'll go for Andy in 4. Monfils might get a purple patch and take a set.

Also, Andy loves playing in front of hostile crowds, he kinda feeds off that sort of thing. So I don't see it as him 'playing the FO crowd' at all.

I predict he'll shut them up fairly early on and win relatively comfortable.
 
Hoping for a Murray win so Nadal doesn't have to keep a French player out of the finals. Although Murray is a tougher opponent for Rafa, the crowd will be better for Rafa in a potential final if Monfils goes down now. That said, I'd still like to see Monfils come through and set up the Monfils/Gulbis dream final. ;)

I almost went with that, but decided to go with Murray in 4...I'm guessing he'll either lose a little focus after taking the first two sets, or Monfils will catch fire briefly in the first two sets and win one of them. Just a guess. I'm pretty confident in Murray in a best-of-five with the way he is playing right now. He is looking really good. If he can step up his aggression just a little, I think he could win the whole thing. Not saying he will, but he's playing well and if he gets by Monfils, he's playing with house money at that point. Nobody will expect him to beat Rafa or Novak on clay, so in theory, he should be able to play loose and let it ride.

I admittedly don't watch a whole lot of Monfils matches. But aggressive? He's court position is (almost) 15 meters behind the baseline. He should be aggressive, but he's usually happy running behind his baseline getting to impossible balls.

As for the match, Muzza in 4, perhaps straights.

Murray was in great form against Verdasco. If he can play like that, he'll beat Monfils easily, provided he doesn't get flustered.

Might get him on a roll and maybe push Rafa to four or five sets.

Murray is used to not having many fans outside UK. I don't see the crowd being an issue. I expect the muzzard to win.

Did Monfils won/achieve anything this year apart from final in Doha?

Nothing of note in IW and Miami.

I think he has just come back from injury and did not play much on clay.

Murray had his regulation "one poor match per GS" against Kochshliber, so he should play well from now on.

Monfils might get a set if Murray level drops, but he can only win in short 3-4 set match.
Anything over 3 hrs and Murray will take his legs away forcing him to defend 5 yards behind the baseline.
 
I just saw that since Wimbledon, Andy hasnt got a top 10 win and if the officials rank him outside top 4 in London he can go more than a year without one which is quite shoking considering his quality.

Murray has only strung 4 consecutive wins together at 2 tournaments this year - the AO and RG.

I'm not sure what being ranked in the top 4 @ wimby has to do with him beating a top tenner but rest assured, Murray is already guaranteed to be seeded at least 4 for Wimbledon.

He wouldnt meet Djokovic, Nadal and Federer at the QF which makes it more likely to actually beat a top 10 guy

I think he actually quite enjoys playing in front of a hostile crowd. Just like Lendl, who back in the day played the role of pantomime villain to perfection.

Andy to troll the frogs in 4.
 
The years Murray won a slam, he didn't go deep or reached the SF of RG. Just saying. In 2012 he lost in the QF and he withdrew in 2013.

So , if he wins today, he is going to lose in the semis in wimbledon and the us open like in 2011.

But if he lose, he is going to lose in the wimbledon final, and is going to win the us open final like in 2012? :o
