Woooooo-hoooo!

Clay warrior Murray! :)

Rafa will probably beat him like a ginger stepchild on Friday but Murray has already had a good RG.

The Nadal fanboys here will try to convince you that you are a pessimistic fan and that Nadal will lose in 4 to Murray. I mean a Nadal fanboy started a thread about Robby Ginepri beating Nadal.

I agree, his clay form in Rome and RG has been a big improvement over the last 2 or 3 years for sure.

What the hell was that!? Monfils for once in a dunno how bloody long reached a QF at a Grandslam and instead of taking his chances and playing smart with a little patience decides to go for broke in practically every single rally in the 5th set, geeez ! He sucks, wasted opportunity, not like he was going to pose much threat to Nadal but really? Now i know why they call him the CLOWN

Murray is ready to take Nadal out on Friday. Strong finish. To me even more impressive than Nadal's finish given the tight H2H with Monfils, the surface, the crowd and the time pressure.

You and me know otherwise Sid.

Murray has a puncher's chance, but that's about it.

Murray has a decent chance I'd say, the way he played in the first 2 sets against Monfils was very very good, very solid backhands and forehands, plenty of hard winners against someone like Monfils is a good sign that he's playing well, however losing the 3rd and 4th set is a little worrying

Not even Goran Ivanisevic and Marat Safin at their craziest would have had meltdown quite like Gael Monfils did in that fifth set.

Murray in 5
Chico, fecaleagle, Fedal4Ever, FedFanBoy, jaggy, jo1998sh, LazyNinja19, Red Rick, Ripster, sosa09, underground

That was a Chernobyl-like meltdown from Monfils.
I would like to point out that absolutely nobody complained about this analogy even though the Chernobyl disaster lead to more deaths than the Twin Towers collapse. Fake outrage is quite revealing.

What happened? All sorts of crazy ill-timed shots? Did he even try?

He did manage to come back from two sets down and he had the momentum. I still didn't expect Monfils to win, but I at least thought he'd lose anywhere from 6-3 to 7-5 and have it be somewhat competitive.

To be fair, Murray only had one bad set - set 4 - he played fine in set 3. Monfils hit his purple patch to deny Andy a straight set win. Which was good for him.

Monfils just had one of his episodes in set 5. Hard to explain really.

Andy was a worth winner though.

I'm baffled as to what happened. Monfils won the fourth set 6-1, and it seemed like the match might be stopped due to the fading light. The match carried on, and Murray looked fatigued and was struggling. Before we knew it, Murray had won the set 6-0 after a load of errors dished out by Monfils by the bucketload.

What happened in the Fifth.....Monfils lost the plot?

Worried Murray would be out of gas against Nadal.

Yeah completely losing it, trying heavy winners out of nowhere...Don't think the game lasted for much more than 3h so Murray should be fine for the semis.

I stopped watching after the 4th. I honestly thought Murray had aggravated his back and was gonna quit. Still in disbelief about the final score...

Going into today's matches, I would have said Murray could push Rafa to 5, but if Murray plays as passively as he did today, he'll be lucky to make it to 4.

I was trying to watch both matches at the same time (one on TV and one on laptop) and I am struggling to explain what happened in the last 2 sets especially.

Looking at Andy body language and facial expressions while talking to official (referee?), he was against playing the fifth set today.

So was his reluctance mental or physical (surely not the way he played in the 5th set)?

I guess, unless you played very highest level sport it is difficult to understand but I would welcome some comments: how do you go from ridiculous o sublime and back in case of these two characters today?

Do you think that Murray's inability to finish the job due to lack of focus etc is the biggest difference between him and the other top guys like Nadal and Djoko?
I mean others are like Rottweiler grabbing the victim and not releasing till the victim is dead (sort of Nadal behaviour in Ferrer match today).

I had some hopes for Murray against Nadal (i.e. hard 4 sets maybe five) but after today, I am less sure.

That's almost as bad as Nadal winning just 4 points against Murray in the 3rd set of the Tokyo Open final in 2011

At least that explainable. Murray was pounding winners everywhere and Nadal was getting outplayed badly. In the 5th set today, Monfils started hitting neutral balls wide or long by a meter.

I don't have any complaints whatsoever about the crowd - they backed their man, just as they should.

Murray re-focused, Gael went into clown mode. We're talking full Krusty here.
right on target with both posts. i'm a monfils fan but i was embarrassed by that last set. granted murray is the better player who raised his level and there is no shame losing to him. but to get bageled and show no fight with that crowd and murray on the ropes?! monfils, tsonga, del po,and baghidatis......certain players just don't have it.

ridiculous to put Delpo in there

Only fake outrage came from you, narcissistic fed fan.

I switched off at 2 sets all. I assumed it would be suspended at that point for lack of light and they would be on again tomorrow.

What happened in that 5th set? Did Murray dramatically up his level or did Monfils just implode or was it a combination of both? I certainly never expected Murray to bagel him considering how well Monfils had been playing in the 4th!

This is ridiculous.
Has anyone come back from two sets down only to lose in a bagel?
Only Monfils could have messed this up.

Losing to Murray was not big deal, it's just how he lost. I'd accept even a combination of clown play and good play and a 3-6 set loss. But, 0-6 after coming back is just ridiculous. It's a match and score that encapsulates everything good and bad about Monfils.

it was a bit weird. monfils exploded in the 3rd. Murray went into his shell in the 4th and then kind of exploded William Wallace style in the 5th when he lost the " bad light" argument with the official.

Monfils made a lot of errors. Often missing my a few feet and sometimes just an inch. Murray wouldn't give an inch. I think it was probably a bit darker than it looked on my stream. Monfils was making similar errors to those he made in the Fognini night match.
The French should have gotten their guy off the court to continue tomorrow.

I think Monfils is a difficult opponent. I mean the guy looked like he was quitting at the end of the second set and then caught fire for two sets, only to quit again.

Murray won. That is all there is to take from this match, unless he has a real injury concern from it.
