RG Tennis Olympics makes no sense

Jordan Thompson:

"The Olympics is back in Europe when the season of tennis is actually in America and getting ready to play the US Open."

"We're coming off the grass going into the hard courts in America. Newport (on grass) and Atlanta (on hard courts), it's their last year as tournaments, and I really enjoy playing on the grass."

"It's a pretty easy decision for me. I'd probably have to stay in Europe and play on clay if I really wanted to give the Olympics a fair crack."

"But I'm defending points from having reached the quarter-finals in Washington last year, and I'm trying to get seeded at a Grand Slam."

What does not make sense is that the Paris Olympic Games will not be played on any court other than Roland Garros, the second time it has been played on clay after Barcelona 1992.
In the end, each player makes decisions based on their own interests and each of them must assume the consequences of their actions.

The Olympics are in Paris and so it must be played at RG. That makes total sense. Where else should they play???
But it would have been far better to hold the tennis event earlier in May, ahead of the official Olympic opening ceremonies.

I see that Olympic tennis is having issues. RG truly is the iconic place that makes sense for the Olympic venue but not for the ATP season. Tough choices for the pro players to make; glory for their nations or for their personal success. I am now thinking that the Bielarussian/Russian tennis players have the easiest decisions from all the other players to make.

Followed by American players. Olympics tennis will be played in Europe when the tennis season is actually then in America as players should be prepping for the USO. It makes no sense to play on clay, then grass, then return to clay when the North American HC season is in full swing.

American players have been in Europe since April and have zero interest to be away from home for 4+ months. I think that's why only Taylor Fritz seems interested in playing the Olympics.

Rublev/Medvedev have an easy choice as oppose to any American tennis stars. 4+ months? Ain't nothing to compare to not having a country.

This year's edition of the Olympics seems to caught the Media and some die hard olympics as a surprise that outside of Murray, Nadal, Djokovic and maybe a few more that it has little to no importance for the majority of players.

I have a feeling that there will be more and more players showing less appealing to tennis olympics in the future.

From my own personal and selfish viewing perspective, far too high a % of tournaments in general / big tournaments are played on hard courts. So I appreciate tournaments played on clay and grass as a departure from that, and I like the fact that this year's Olympic tournament will be played on clay.

Regarding the Olympics themselves as a whole, I appreciate Olympic tennis, but I don't have the same level of interest in the events for many other sports that I used to (i.e. the sort of sports that you'd tune in for every 4 years and enjoy at the Olympics, without following them properly during the periods in-between). Also I completely understand why so many residents in different cities around the world, whether it has been in Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Paris ahead of the last 2 or upcoming editions, or in Hamburg or Boston for example ahead of aborted bids, have not wanted them to host the Olympics considering it to be a big waste of money.

they was little hype upp bc of muzza and rafa. but before was not big deal at all. even in last 2 editions there was missing 5 top10, 10 top20 and 16 top30 players. something you can not see at slams, WTF and masters.

He's not crying, he just wants to prepare and do his best for US hard court season. Nobody force anyone to play Olympics.

He's not a part time exhibition specialist tennis player who skips Wimbledon just to prepare for Olympics lol.

Tennis at the Olympics is a side-show, but an Olympic Gold does make you a national hero.
I think that this is the reason why Fritz is apparently choosing to play Olympics; the guilt for not being able to win USO or for missing on seeing his son that he has from his previous relationship is overridden by the validation he seeks from Americans.

Wimbledon was played twice 2012 with olympics, so why not Roland garros?

I thought we had Olympic places problems-Paris with RG, London that you suggested with Wimby. Sorry if I am misleading.

Agree with all of this

Honestly, tennis should distance itself from the Olympics.
Tennis has 4 gem events a year and numerous other spectacular events.
Why tarnish it with the corrupty Olympics?

Or if tennis had any courage, they'd make it old school olympics and make it a non-pro event.

He has zero chance of winning a medal. Best to stay in those 250’s.
