RG WTA player runs out of rackets

That’s crazy. Article said she broke 3 racquet strings in 10 mins and the rest of her racquets were getting restrung. Don’t they have runners to go take racquets to be restrung and can get them back on court in 15 mins? Would be unfortunate if that service is only available in the later rounds.

although the following article does say that she sent for restringing but maybe too late? Not sure.

And that article also says the following about her string setup:
“Zavatska seemed to be playing a hybrid string, lengthways gut, crossways poly - and the latter seemed to have damaged the soft main strings (in the rainy and humid temperatures) too badly.”

I watched that match and believe she was carrying 5 or 6 racquets. Mains appeared to be gut from the frayed breaks.

she broke a string deep in the 2nd set, reached for a racquet in her bag and hesitated. 3 points later, breaks another one and starts to panic. She hands over 4 racquets and some strings to have it restrung.

The umpire calls the stringers that some racquets are coming and Zavatska asks how long it will take. Umpire says he will ask to rush one and have the others done later.

She’s down to her last racquet now and it snaps within the next few games. Zavatska breaks down and her Coach hands her a Pure Drive from the stands to finish with a bagel in the third. Didn’t break any strings after that though.

From my experience it's impossible to break new strings in just 10 minutes...she probably went to the match with 3 used racquets that she alternated during practice.

Yeah, but you aren't a pro (I think). Pete Sampras went through like 6 rackets in one set, breaking each set of strings in normal play. His stringer at the time, Jay Schweid was sitting in the stands looking more and more antsy. This was in the tournament at San Jose. Vera Zvonareva went through 4 or 5 rackets in one set during her match at Hilton Head. She too had to borrow a racket from her coach. She famously melt down on court destroying a racket, kicking it and just being generally disgusted. For her tirade, the chair was understanding and issued no warning. Her predicament put the crowd solidly behind her and she wound up winning the match as I recall.

I know that at the pro event I strung at which was a WTA Futures, those girls strung before each and every match. They don't leave much to change. I would bet my house that her rackets were freshly strung as well. If anything, the wet conditions probably didn't help her gut too much.

It doesn't happen too often these days because they rotate their rackets in singles with the game change, but it does...

The combination of the "heavy" balls, damp conditions, and the grit from the brick court can make any particular string setup much less durable.

This is why I've switched to Klip Legend from Babolat gut. The coating on the Legend survives our moist clay a lot longer. Yes, there is a sacrifice in feel but, it's too costly to restring gut all the time. Sacrifices must be made.

I'll have to say, in the thread I did on natural gut, while I didn't care for the feel of Klip compared to Babolat, it did last considerably longer.

Novak’s stringer was seen getting off a private jet from Switzerland wearing a Rolex:eek:

Along with convincing RG to use heavy Wilson balls and rigging Thiem’s draw, looks like a master Bond villain is scheming a triple-knockout punch:cool:

Sounds unbelievable, she’s in the 3rd set and breaks 3 sets of string in 10 minutes? Is that the coach’s fault maybe? How does she alternate her rackets? If she started the match with used strings in 3 rackets I bet she never does again.

Dimitrov broke 4 sets of string in the third set of his match against Barrere... Gut+heavy balls+cold, damp conditions=easily broken strings.

You don’t often use the Internet, but when you do you believe everything you read! I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
No, not really. It just wasn't particularly witty, so I thought it was some rumor. As I said, I would assume the stringer is already there, but I thought some people were spreading that story around.

So i noticed too but nothing special. Anyone still advising gut is such a durable string is probably a cautious flat hitter who lives in area where it is always sunny and dry and playing on a hardcourt.

Gut falls apart in the extreme moisture. It just shreds and separates. The clay holds the moisture and sticks it to the ball and string. They're so dependent on their exact setups that they go with it knowing that it's likely to fail. Maybe they could spray it down with string paint to make it last longer.

Why couldnt they replace gut with a multi? Zverez is said to play with 3kg less tension which is a big change too.

wait. According to TT the racquet makes zero difference since pros can just adjust their technique.
Pretty sure no one on TT has ever said switching to an entirely different brand frame mid match without any warm up whatsoever was going to make zero difference.

Of course by that time I'm sure she was so mentally rattled nothing was going to change the outcome of the match.

not my fault all of TimeToPlaySets and E45lover's posts are deleted. But here is one that is in the spirit of my post:

She just took 3 racquets to a GS match?

I've broken 2 sets of strings during a match before, and I'm not nearly that good nor hitting that hard.
