I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that several voted for Thiem in 3. This unproven young talent yet to find stability in the top echelons of the game is going to beat 'The Rafa' in 3.

At least half of the people who vote on polls in this forum vote for who they HOPE will win... as opposed to who they THINK will actually win. It's why you still see that 30% of people will vote for Federer to win the French Open.

People in this place vote on players like people rate movies on IMDB.

Nadal blew a chance to serve a breadstick in the first. Still a pretty easy match for him.

Kid doesn't have what it takes.

Quote from Nadal himself:

"His ball is so high he was able to hit strong he has completely everything to become a champion," said the world No.1, who for the first time arrived at Roland Garros having lost three matches on his favored clay this season.

"I think today I played a solid match, I knew that if I didn't I would be in
trouble."

:-?

I'm glad an expert see things as they are and will be. Nice words, Rafa!

Not dissimilar to things Nadal has said about Dimitrov:

“He's playing well,” Nadal told reporters. “He had a good chance against Djokovic in first set of Indian Wells, then good chance against Andy [Murray] in first set of Miami. I saw both matches a little bit. Now he's the present and the future. He's able to play very well, very aggressive, very good technique. He's a complete player.”

Tomic:

"He understands the game," Nadal said of the 19-year-old Tomic. "His position on court is fantastic. He's young, and probably he's doing great mentally. He stays very relaxed with, positive face, even when the match is tough for him, I saw him always with calm and accepting everything really well. That's the right tactic to be a champion. Probably he's one of these players that have a very good chance to be there. [...]. The normal evolution is to saw him, I don't know if this year, in the Top 10, but probably this year, next year."

Raonic:

"But seriously with his serve, forehand and not bad movement, if you are just a little bit smart and try and keep improving your game, you have to be in the top positioning on the rankings. He is young. He has everything to be there. Only problem is injuries, because he has the rest to be there. I don't have any doubt that he will be fighting for important tournaments very soon. If his mental part works well, I don't have any doubt he will be there."

I'm sure all of these young guns he's destroyed over and over again have received similar praise from Rafa. So yeah, nothing ground breaking here.

"I think today I played a solid match, I knew that if I didn't I would be in trouble."

He says that about every single match.

You forgot to mention the people who KNOW Federer will win.

So, no sign of injury for Nadal, no?

If anyone from the VB knows about anything currently - please share it and share your source.

Just want to make sure, you know.

Can we safely say now that RAFA is back and he is THE favorite to win the French open AGAIN ?

Makes no difference what y'all say. You might as well keep calling Djokovic the favorite. Makes no difference to the real world. In the real world, Djokovic is not capable of beating Nadal at the slams (since February 2012).

That's a really cute video, nice to get away from all the gloom, doom, and drudgery of the speculation surrounding the attempt to win RG for the 9th time. Hope he can do it, but that was a nice reprieve.

On a personal note, I am getting married on Saturday, so I am really pleased with the domination of Thiem today. At least I can rest assured that Rafa is through the first week (knock on wood).
