Richard Gasquet has withdrawn from the 2016 Aus Open

Well this sucks. I was all aboard the Gasquet hype train of 2016. Hopefully he'll be ready for action during the clay season.

As it stands that makes Cilic the 12th seed. Therefore Cilic is no longer a possible 4th round opponent for ND, AM, RF and SW. But could now meet RN, DF, TB or KN in R4

Wait, what? The draw is already out?

I am talking about the seeds. What Gasquet's withdrawal means in terms of who is seeded where and therefore who could potentially draw who wheen the draw is made in 2.5 weeks.

Seeds 1-4 play 13-16 in round 4. Gasquet's withdrawal moves Cilic from 13 to 12. Therefore Cilic will no longer be a potential round 4 opponent of the 1-4 seeds but 5-8.

Also moves Lopez from 17 to 16th seed

*As it stands

He's never really done well full stop. :p

I think that's a bit harsh ;-)

He has a nice allround game, but his forehand is his biggest weakness and his serve comes in a close second. Those are the two main assets in tennis.
Benoit Paire also has a (relatively) weak forehand for a top ATP player.

I'm actually amazed they've done as well as they have tbh ...

It opens things up and makes it more interesting for sure!
Lopez goes to 16 and Tomic 17 but there's only 15 points between them.
Lopez is playing Doha in the first week while Tomic is playing Brisbane. Neither players are defending any points. (Tomic won 45 points in Brisbane the previous year but has other performances equal to 45 points that are currently non-countable and will therefore replace Brisbane).

So Tomic needs to reach the SF in Brisbane and needs Lopez to lose in the 1st or 2nd round if he wants to be the 16th seed. Or another top 16 player could withdraw (Raonic and Nishikori both not 100%?)
But we also have Paire and Thiem less than 100 points behind the 2 players so they're hot on their heels as well!

Seedings are decided after the 1st week (Brisbane, Doha & Chennai) so whatever happens the following week won't matter (if i'm correct?).

I'm a bit of a wiki novice but I edited the 2016 Australian Open page to reflect Gasquets withdrawal and changed the seedings so if people wanted an idea they could check that out

Not sure if I agree re. Gasquet. Unless you just mean relatively compared to the top 10? He has a deceptively good first serve and his forehand is a good shot. They're only lacking when you consider the top 10 has generally included guys like the Big 3, Berdych, Tsonga etc...for the last few years. Guys with bigger or more effective serves and much better forehands.

Not to be callous but he would've just folded easily against one of the top guys. Wish him a speedy recovery though.

Yes, I mean against the kind of player he would meet in QF or better, which is why he's stuck with 4th rounds ;-)

He has a very good serve

It will be nice to watch the tennis and not get my heart broken (again) in the round of 16 or so. Looking forward to his next turn on the big stage, hopefully Paris.

Auckland has been moved up a week so results from there will also influence the AO seedings.

Gasquet has withdrawn...
Kyle Edmund now gets direct entry.
Too bad for RG; not getting any younger - won't have many more opportunities.

Good for Edmund. Sort of bugs me that someone at 100 isn't directly in. Too many wild cards. Was looking at average seedings for 2015 tournaments; the majors aren't as high as you'd think.
