RIP Tourna Tac grips.. what to use now?

A few months ago I bought some Tourna Tac grips and noticed they came in a new zip-lock package. The same grips we're told.

Sadly, the grips have changed formula and now they have two characteristics which have ended my 20+ year use of them.

Firstly, they don't bond to themselves anymore so they have to be overlapped more otherwise they slip down. And BOY do they slip compared to the old formula. After having to re-wrap a grip maybe twice in 20 years I suddenly had to re-wrap almost every grip. (see pic below - when I started it was flush with the foot of the grip.)

Secondly, and even worse, they start degrading and falling apart within the first 30 minutes of use, and last only a couple of hours. They sort of roll apart where your hand rubs the most. The old formula didn't come apart like this - I could use one grip for at least 8 hitting sessions (2hr each approx) before they had to be replaced. The pic below was from just 30 mins hitting.

To their credit, when I contacted the makers of Tourna they said they'd get me some replacements, but they said they hadn't had any complaints about the formula change which I simply can't believe. An empirically worse grip which costs effectively 3-4 times the price to use cannot be what the "customer ordered."

Any advice on what grip I can change to which is similar in characteristics to the original Tac? I don't even care if it doesn't chemically bond to itself as long as it doesn't slip down the grip.

I think Mega Tac is very similar but even more tacky. That would be a good choice. I agree I am not one of those people that like tournagrip dry feel so I also like the Original Tac grips but had to switch to something else. I switched to Mega Tac grip and been very happy with it. but I do switch overgrips every 2 hours of play because I have super sweaty hands. I have to confess.

Exact same problem with the Tourna Tac grips, specially the durability. Like you said , after 30 min stars to fall apart
At the time i´m using Gamma Supreme, very tacky but not very thin.

Please tell me this doesn't apply to Mega Tac? Im almost due to buy more and would hate for it to be changed too.

You should be fine I'd say. Mega Tac never bonded to itself like Tourna Tac did so in that respect it's no change. In terms of durability the makers say they haven't changed either the original (dry) or Mega Tac... just Tourna Tac.

The problem with Mega Tac is it lasts only a couple of hours too. The old Tourna Tac probably lasted 5 times as long which is why it's so disappointing they've changed them to be more like Mega.

Thanks guys. I've tried these now and they are pretty decent approximation - definitely better than the new version of Tourna Tac.

A small dislike about them is I left-hand wrap my grips and these come tapered the wrong way so I have to cut my own taper at the other end. They're also really short compared to Tourna grips.
Head Extreme Soft is another good choice.
+1

I also use Head Extreme Soft.

This is the worst news I've heard in a while. I've been a Tourna-Tac user for YEARS. I love how wide it is. Yonex Grap is amazing as well but it's narrower and doesn't overlap as nicely. Thanks Unique.

Just chiming in to say the HEAD Extreme Soft overgrips are really good. They have the right amount of tack, are durable, and I like the texture the little holes provide. I preferred them over the old Tourna-Tacs anyway.

I've found a second use for them… wrapping my pool cue. I don't like the linen wraps they use, so just out of curiosity I used an over grip where the linen section was and was much more satisfied with the feel it gave the cue. Several of the players asked me what I had on my cue, and some liked it enough to try it themselves.

What's the difference between TournaTac and TournaTac II? I haven't been able to find TournaTac II for at least 5 or so years...

Tourna Tac, which I have been buying for ages until late last year from TW were good because they were the one grip in the Tourna range which bonded to itself after you wrapped it so you could have very small overlaps. It was also much more durable. I would typically use one grip per restring which lasted maybe 8-10 hits (12-16 hours approx). The newer grips don't bond so you have to overlap them a lot more. They also last maybe 2-3 hours tops before falling apart on the wear points.

I like the babolat my grip overgrips a lot. Tacky but not too tacky and soft. I bought big package of them...PM/email blai212@gmail.com if interested in trade or whatnot, I bought a 70 pack and could unload some...

Count me in on people who are not a fan of the new revision of TournaTac. It seems like they decided to swap in the materials of the new SoftTac line and just offer the blue, black, pink, and white colors as TournaTac. People who have used the stuff for years are going to notice how it’s different though.

I tried Wilson Pro (too thick, not wide enough), Head Prime (not wide), Head Prestige (not tacky enuf), Babolat Orig (close, but poor durability), and have yet to find a proper replacement for “legacy” TournaTac. I’m currently using MegaTac, but it takes about 3 hitting sessions before it begins to feel similar to the old TournaTac.

Yes to all this. The new TournaTac are complete rubbish. I gave a couple of my leftover ones to a friend who hardly even plays. I saw him on the weekend and the one he was using was all torn and flakey after just a few hours use.

I'm using the Head Extreme Sort and they seem pretty good so far. The main downside is they're short. I don't have a 2HBH so it's not too much of an issue.

Hhmm, I use the Extreme Soft and also have a 4 5/8 grip and I have no trouble getting my overgrips to go all the way to the top of the handle (HEAD racquets), we must wrap differently.

Try Yonex Super Grap. I've moved on from Babolat VS Original to Super Grap and find the Yonex better.

I’ve generally gone away from tacky overgrips with the weather heating back up, but every time I go back to them, my favorite ends up being Solinco Wonder Grip. There are grips that are tackier, or are more cushioned, or with better feel, but I don’t think there’s a better tacky overgrip in terms of combining the above factors.
