Roddick and Hewitt

After several hours of intense, gripping entertainment, I want to express my appreciation for both of these champions. They are two of the grittiest fighters in the sport, and they bring out the best in each others' games when they share the court. Although they sometimes cross the line behavior-wise during the heat of competition, I have nothing but respect and admiration for their fighting spirit, persistence and dedication. Best wishes to both of them for the remainder of the season.

I agree, they played the best match of the tournament so far with just incredible shot making from both of them. Roddick came out full force with the serve, forehand, and was even excellent at the net. Hewitt was playing great counter punching tennis, and upped it up a notch in the 4th and 5th sets with some great offensive forehands. They've played alot of tough and close matches, so this is nothing out of the ordinary. But this is probably the best match out of the whole bunch.

No joke, this may be the best rivalry of this decade -- yes i am not kidding.

USO 2001 -- The best match i would see until 2003. I thought there QF was better than Agassi's and Pete's

RG 01 -- not known well cause Roddick retired in the 3rd, but the 1st two sets were pure fight

AO 05 -- 1st set was all Roddick, 4th set was all Lleyton, but the 2nd and 3rd sets were pure drama. Roddick still had the huge FH and Lleyton was such a warrior

IW 05 -- the best 3 set ever match until Djokovic Nadal in Madrid

Wimby 09 -- revival of the great rivalry. Roddick kept pushing Hewitt back, but Rusty kept fighting...

Look, for me Federer and Nadal have had 4 good matches (Rome 06, Wimby 07 and 08 and AO 09), all the best were really average.... just my opinion anyways

Agreed, these guys are great players and two of the best fighters the sport has ever seen. They get too much disrespect due to their records against Federer.

You really did. It was pretty spectacular. Not necessarily with amazing shots or something but just a solid high level of tennis throughout with some ups and downs on both sides, a nice winner, some good words for the loser, a late finish, a fifth set, trouble with the umpire, Umps accussing linejudges of lying in their face, injuries, 2 hot girlfriends, a great atmosphere, Aussies going wild, big serving, Backhand Winners from Roddick, Hewitt SERVING himself out of trouble, Roddick hitting great volleys, tiebreak letdowns, double faults on big points, warm weather, netchords on matchpoint and many things more

True that, and Federer hasn't gotten enough respect from some people for holding that great record against these guys. Everyone Acknowledges Pete for his great record against Agassi, yet Roddick is called a '*******' for always losing. Pretty ridiculous. Hewitt and Roddick could have been all time greats. worth at least 4 Slams each.

Figures! I thought Haas / Djoker would be a good match up. It wasn't.

I thought Murray / JCF would be a battle. It wasn't.

I thought Andy would take Lleyton in straights. And it was "the match of the tournament" so far.

Grrr! I didn't record it.

'Roddick kept pushing Hewitt back, but Rusty kept fighting...'

I'm not sure that was the story of the match. Hewitt seemed to win way more actual points during the rallies and outplay Roddick in large quantities of the match. If Hewitt had just got more first serves in he could have taken it. Lost count of the amount of unforced errors and first serves into the net.

Anyway as much as I am gutted that Hewitt is out, I have to say it was a stunning match - so good that I would say it was atleast **** 1/2 and maybe even **** 3/4.

What i meant is.... Roddick jumped to a huge start in the 1st, Lleyton replied by breaking in the 2nd.... Roddick jumped to a lead in the 2nd set tiebreak, Lleyton took the breaker saving 3 set pts. Roddick took the 3rd, lleyton replied with 2 breaks in the 4th..

my respect for both these guys has just increased heaps.

and i agree with Breaker who said that both these guys do not get respected enough and are only known as two of fed's whipping boys, they are both hard-working and show alot of respect towards one another.

Oh got you. Sorry. I'm just a bit sensitive on the whole Hewitt got to where he is for being a great fighter whilst loads of people ignore his wonderful shot making and brilliant footwork. I remember once when it was the wimbledon semi-final against Henman and some tool said something along the lines of if only Henman had Hewitt's heart he could be as good as him.
Ridiculous - for a start Henman had good bottle and was an overachiever - Hewitt had (s) great bottle and a great game to back it up with.

what an amazing match! I only caught last set. Amazing effort by Hewitt to make it this far congrats. Roddick had nerves off steel to close that match out. If only Hewitt made that last volley!

Great match, I think a candidate for match of the year so far. A different ending result would've been better imo

I was rooting for Hewitt... but both players deserved the victory. I'm happy they managed to show some of their best tennis, it was match of the highest quality.
Now I hope Roddick gets the job done and reaches the finals.

On a side note, the quiality of those two players makes Federer's dominance over both of them so much more amazing.
