Roddick and his mea culpa's

I found this post on tennis-prose.com about Roddick and his contrition on losing bad matches and found it interesting. What do you think about this?

"Don't Cry For Me"--Andy Roddick

by Dan Markowitz

Does anyone in any sport give a more sardonic interview than Roddick? I don’t think so. One commentator called him “almost-British” in his sense of humor. It struck me after his loss to Lu that he made a remark to the effect of, “If you lost your job, you’d wake up feeling pretty ****ty the next day.”

It seems to me this is a remark I’ve heard Roddick make before. Maybe interviewers are asking Roddick if he really hurts badly enough after such a horrific loss? Like maybe reporters don’t believe whether Roddick really wants it bad enough, and the innuendo there is that if you had as hot a wife as Roddick, would you care if you lost a tennis match or not? And Roddick, because he’s been through this line of questioning many times before, always seems to feel he has to defend himself here by essentially saying, “I bleed just like you bleed when your stabbed.”

I mean I think it’s pretty obvious Roddick wants it bad enough, he’s just not good enough to win another slam unless he gets another magical double-down like Nalbandian giving up a two-sets-to-love-lead in the semis of a Slam and then Andre losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero. It’s nice to face JCF in hard court Slam finals as opposed to Roger Federer.

But it’s interesting that Roddick continually goes through this head-wringing with the press. Almost like he puts himself up on the cross, looks plenty sorrow-full in front of the mob, so that the American tennis fans will really believe that Andy is fully putting out. Look, Andy, we’ll believe you as long as you don’t make any more of those trips right before the French Open to visit your wife while she’s filming a movie in Hawaii.

Can any player play as long as he has, still be playing and not want to win anymore? I don't know, he could retire and come back in 2 years if he'd rather spend time with his wife for now. By then he will have fattened her up with 2 kids and home time won't be so fun anymore.

Probably. But he'd still whup the whole lot of us if you gave him only one fault per serve, and it has to be his 2nd serve.
