Roddick calls on Queens to be 500

See his twitter feed. 8 of the top 11 to play . . . why isn't it 500? With Roddick at 8 and sitting out most of the clay season, plus big numbers at FO and W to defend, he's got to worry about sticking in the top 10.

Roddick has had an extremely good start to the season, he has little to worry about dropping out of the top ten. But Roddick's point isn't really valid. Look at Doha and how many big names were there this year and last...it's only a 250 event.

wWas just going to post this, though I doubt he’s concerned about ranking points in his argument. Queens has a better field than most if not all the 500s so far this year. I love Hamburg and think it should not have lost its Masters status, but its odd that a lead up to Wimbledon tourney with 8 top 11 players is a 250 while a clay tourney in July is a 500…

Doha's practically an exhibition. I've seen some of those matches . . . not a whole lot of effort, imo. But why should they make Queen's a 500? They've already got 8 of the top 11!!!!!!

Not a whole lot of effort??? Err, looked to me like Davy put in a considerable amount of effort after getting bagelled by Nadal.

Last year it had four, both times including the number 1 and 2 players in the world. Point is, strength of draw isn't really that significant. Last year Queens had four of the top ten, but included Monfils and Simon...not exactly incredible threats on grass. I think it's possible Queen's could make a good grass master's event, but using the draw as a reason why is specious at best. It's not like every year they have incredible draws.

LMAO at this twitfight.. doesn't Roddick get thousands of fan responses all day, good and bad? Why the hell is he giving this clown the time of day?

How Belgrade, with its 28 man draw and 1 top tenner, can be equivelant to Queen's with its 56 man draw and 7 top tenners is beyond me.

Roddick never cared until he collapsed in the Wimbledon final's tiebreak. He predictably agonized in a self-pitying loss. He'll give marathon matches to the crowd, with poor effort until the year he retires.
At least he surrounds himself with people who match his 'intellectual' level
when he leaves the court.

Queens should definitely be a 500. The field is always strong and very competitive, more so than a 250. Barcelona should be downgraded and Queens upgraded.

Does the quality of the field matter at all? I thought it was all based on prize money and facility size.

But, I generally agree with him. It's a big spot on the calendar, just because here are so few grasscourt tournaments. It has presitige seemingly more than the points of its assigned tier. And, a player has to go throgh a stellar field to win it.

If it was a Masters event, Federer wouldn't be ranked in the top 3 (Halle & Estoril are treated well like Queens Club).
Too little, too late to cry over spilt milk, Roddick. Then again, he was just happy to be in the top 10 in the years 2004 through 2009.

Federer doesn't play Queens because he's scared of Nadal.

I'm pretty sure he was playing Halle before Nadal was a force on grass. Even though I tend to agree with you on some issues, you really don't need to be an over the top troll. It really kinda...well it doesn't help.

BTW, where's Lleyton Hewitt's name on that players list? He's played Queens every year from 1998 to 2009.

I wish the grass season were longer. As much as the RG - Wimby 6-week stretch is awesome, it would be nice for there to be a few more grass tourneys. A 500 and a Masters would be great. "Grass season" doesn't really work to describe a four week stretch with one 250 and Wimbledon.

this year it has an incredible draw, almost arguably better than Monte Carlo, and making it a 500 would encourage more consistency in draw depth. it's an old and well attended tournament in one of the most tennis-rich cities in the world. past champs include Roddick, Hewitt, Sampras, Llendl, McEnroe, etc. there are no grass 500s. these all seem like reasons to at least push it up to 500 status.

Quit whining Roddick. He can't just play grass and HC tournaments; it's lame. Clay courts are a big part of tennis, he should embrace them instead of avoid them.

Whether Queens should be 500 points is irrelevant really, he just doesn't want to drop out of the top 10.

Baby.

I am all for a grass Masters, but 3000 points seems too much for one single city.

What about Halle instead? Then Germany would get back a Masters. It is Roger's undisputed turf only because most of the top guys prefer the logistics of settling in London for its two tournaments.

Queens should be made a masters or something... the grass season is a joke right now, I mean, just some 250 events and then Wimby? No wonder we don't have any good grass court players. If they extended the grass season by making Queens a masters, and adding in say, another week of tournaments, that'd be a lot better already. As it is though, nobody can take the grass season seriously...

I agree with Roddick, there should be more
points available on grass.

Clay has too many points available in such a short amount of time, get rid of one of the clay masters and add a grass masters.
