Roddick is an embarassment

Everything you hear in an interview is fake. Watch him on the court belittling and cursing at refs to see who he really is. After he hits a winner he curses at his opponent across the net. How old are you andy? 25? Still havent grown up yet? Youve been a spoiled punk your whole life. I blame your parents for part of that because they obviously let you get away with whatever you want. What kind of person you are in life is much more important than how how you play. Your 21 year old opponent was twice as mature as you today. You should look in the mirror, because you are an embarassment to professional athletes around the world. The key word being professional . Grow up.

On-court demenaor = less than desirable when he's mad. Especially whiny towards refs.

Demeanor in rest of life = pretty darn awesome, as far as I've seen.

Why is his "on court demeanor" somehow more real than everything else in his life? The emotions are different on court than in real life, for everybody. I don't like his whining either, but I don't see how this makes him "fake."

i was just about to make a thread exactly like this. i know, the way he acts on court is no less than unbelievable. he should've been defaulted numerous times for swearing and cursing out the all the refs as well as his opponent. the unsportsman-like conduct is ridiculous. he really brings tennis down a notch. i'll definitely be rooting for gicquel in the next round. lets see an upset!

he is terrible. espn keeps kissing his butt, saying he has momentum and confidence comming into this tournament? what confidence? just cause he came close to beating federer at shanghai and won in a exibition? yea, roddick still cant volley and set up shots at the net. why dont they give creit to blake, hes number 4!!!

Actually, P-Mac and Cliffy both called out Roddick a bit for his foul mouth and bad attitude today. I was surprised. They said it wasn't winning him any favors, and that he'd likely be appalled if they sat him down to watch himself talk to the ref that way on video.

Why is his on court demeanour the 'real' Andy and the persona he lives the rest of his entire life the 'fake' Andy?

He's a punk, plain and simple. Maybe he's a cool guy off the court, but as they say, you show your stripes when you're having trouble... he's just an ass at heart. I'm so glad James Blake has become so good, so he can be the US poster boy instead of Rod-dick.

Last I checked, tennis can be an emotional sport.

As an emotional player I agree, but not to the point where Rodick took it during this match. Talking trash across the net, this isn't basketball and he isn't Larry Bird.

Andy, talk trash to yourself, belittle yourself, swear at yourself, I don't have a problem with that. BS'g the ref is lower than we want you to go.

Great thread you started!!!!

Andy's been learning a lot from Jimbo! Whatever it takes to erase the trend...

What I found unacceptable is that he didn't have the game to back up his attitude today.

That's all I will say, no spoilers.

he is terrible.

he is a top 10 player. he cannot be terrible.

what confidence? just cause he came close to beating federer at shanghai and won in a exibition?

read what you said again, and if that isnt good momentum, i dunno what is.

why dont they give creit to blake, hes number 4!!!

because blake wasnt playing at the moment. maybe at a blake match they will give credit to blake.

I've never liked him because of his on court demeanor. It shows something of your maturity with how you act on court. He shows none, whatsoever.

You dont see 90% of the other guys act like that. Federer doesnt cuss at the umpires or opponents. Stop making excuses for him. There is NO excuse for the kind of stuff he says every match.

For those with the unrational argument "how do you know that is the real andy? The real andy is what you see off the court." Off the court he is a millionaire, and the only andy you see off the court is when he knows the camera is on him and he is focused on what will be portrayed through the TV. This is a simple truth.

And whoever said everyone has a different personality on the court, thats a copout, and that is true only for people who are hotheads when they get frustrated in life. Thats like saying mel gibson isnt racist, he only said those things when because was drunk. You always have those feelings you just don't share them when you are composed. Same thing in this case. Those defending cussing at refs and opponents you should learn what class and dignity mean. This quote nails it.

you show your stripes when you're having trouble

Ok, after watching 2 seconds of Roddick's ESPN interview, he really IS a jackass. What a chump.

EDIT: Drop the sarcasm-as-humor, do you actually make anyone laugh? It's just unnecessary... Plus, can't this guy give anyone on TV some respect and just sit in a chair instead of sprawling out leaning on a desk? Can't this little b**** sit up in a chair and have a discussion without sounding like a bratty 13 year old? He's just a disgrace.

If the ball had of been out on that call in the first set, I wouldn't of minded all that much.

The fact of the matter though is that he insulted the linesman, swore at him, argued with the umpire and made the statement that "the ball wasn't even within 3 inches of being in"

On the replays the ball was plum on the line so that's how honest a player he really is. He seems like a pretty good actor, must be all of the fake interviews that he has done over the years.

I would love to see you say this to his face...

Yeah Roddick shouldn't have said that but it was in the heat of the moment. We don't know what the deal was on how stupid the umpire was so I can't really comment if it was deserving or not of those comments.

I would love to see you say this to his face...

Why?.. Because being a tennis player and on tv makes you tougher than anyone else mate?..

In the neighbourhood I grew up in, they would say Andy who? And he would get slapped from pillar to post for even looking the wrong way..

He is a tennis player, not a K-1 demi-god..... He gets payed alot of money to do what he does.. The people that officiate these tournaments mostly dont get paid, and do it for the love of the sport. I think you have your "who respect who" views a little messed up?

Everyone is entitled to make a mistake. They are not entitled to be abused by a pompous ass because he is having a little trouble winning a few points.. Think about it..

You're a tool.

Roddick behaves like he does on court BECAUSE HE CARES. Most of these guys are happy to go out there, and win or lose, collect a pay check. And off the court, he gives the best interview on the tour-funny, intelligent, self-deprecating, a bit mischevous at times...I mean, he's not Norman Mailer or anything, but for a TENNIS PLAYER? Head and shoulders above the rest of the cliche huggers who are as wooden as your typical dead tree.

ok i thought about it.

and heres what i came up with:

read that guys post, and tell me if that sounded mature? his post itself takes any credibility about what he says about roddick, his reaction is also unnaceptable.

as for you, you sound like youre playing too many video games, chill out on the mortal combat.

i just want to see him say it to the guys face. i dont think he would do it.

Last I checked, tennis can be an emotional sport.

Nobody is arguing this but it is how you show and deal with your emotions that differs. For a top player and somebody who has been in the tour for these years, I really expect him to deal with this better by now. That's why I will never like Roddick. My biggest gripe with him from ever since is how he lets some bad calls and such affect him in a way that he carries on. Yet I have never heard the commentators mention it until now.

your head would get served at 155 mph LOL

So you think that's how Roddick would deal with someone telling him that he's a jackass?

That would be great to see, Roddick finally being himself and showing the fans the real him. Not everyone is fooled by his acting off court.

lol. i couldnt agree more.

Not true. Chair umpires at the Slam/ATP/WTA tour level do get paid, and they earn a decent wage. There is someone on this forum who can be more specific about that, but I'm not sure if he's around much anymore.

I agree. The kids here on TW are like the ones on MTF: they just aren't sophisticated enough to understand how to differentiate between player's behavior that's done during competitive, heat-of-the-moment matches, and their normal every day off-court behavior.

Andy's off court behavior has always been exemplarary so I'd hardly call him "fake."

Their friendly handshake after the match shows that Tsonga is smart enough not to take such things personally. Most professional players don't.

huh?.. Asking to respect the people that stand in the sun all day for free to make sure that we the fans, and they the players actually have a tournament to play and watch is no mature?

But doing the Na-na-na-nana routine and telling someone to say something to his face is?

As I said, he is just a tennis player.. So what if the kid did tell it as it is to his face?. Still doesnt make him wrong.. Roddick is out of line "anytime" when he abuses anyone. Let alone someone just doing there job voluntarily..

um, im sorry it went right over your head, but it was a figure of speech, of course.

I will agree he is a great interview, the comment of the 200lb tennis player was a good example. The older I get the more cliche's I have learned to ignore(insert New England Patriots).
Many of our athletes have programmed responses to questions already for the media. The other day I was listening to an interview, the question that was asked was never answered and the media person never asked a follow up. At least Chris Fowler stays with the interview and asks the next question instead of just going along.
I think the issue here is belittleing of oppenents and officials. Our society has allowed these actions to continue and then when it happens to our athletes, like in Davis Cup we, the American media gets all up in arms becasue our poor boys are getting berrated and yelled at.

Just act with deportment and sportsmanship, that is all we are asking!!!

I am talking about ball kids and line umpires.. Not Umpires and match referees..

Still doesnt excuse the fact.. No one has the right to abuse anyone.. Dissagree if you like, but have some respect..

Linespeople don't work for free at Slams and ATP tour events. Pretty sure they get paid something at Challenger events too. Drivers, on the other hand...

From what I've heard from fans who've met Roddick for an autograph for whatever, he's been nothing but great. Sure, I've also heard more than one bad story, but Roddick seems to be nicer off court a lot more than he is nasty. And with no cameras pointed at him, either.

take his recent charital events in december here in florida for example...

There are people in this forum, I'd bet even some in this thread, who get just as worked up as Andy does during their USTA league matches. So unless you TRULY act exactly the same way on court as you do at the office, then perhaps you'll excuse yourself from this discussion...

That being said, as mouthy as Andy gets during some of his matches, today was one of the worst. My problem with him was that most of it was completely unnecessary. You can't ask a chair umpire to overrule close calls on the baseline and it only hurt Andy to keep jawing off during the changeovers. So Andy, shut up and play tennis. All this yammering doesn't help you, it just makes your matches longer.

I think Safin is funnier and more natural in interviews and on the spot comments than Roddick.

Well when I did, it, we even had to pay for our own uniform, and that was big tournament leading up to the Australian open. Although that was a few years ago..

Anyway, I think you are missing the point. The fact is. Celebrity or Sportsman or not. Nobody has the right to just abuse someone because things arent going your way.. If that was the case, then maybe we should allow linesmen to give it back.. But "that" would be indeed immature and not in the spirit of the game.

I dont think players would be so quick if they knew that the linesmen would give it back.. Its just amazing that their hasnt been one in the history of tennis that has just said to himself "you know what, why should I take this crap from this guy" and given a player a serve back?

I think Safin is funnier and more natural in interviews and on the spot comments than Roddick.

it doesnt matter who is the funniest, point is, roddick is cool on interviews.

btw, watch for tursonov, he seems like he would give a good interview as well.

take his recent charital events in december here in florida for example...
But power play, those are for "fake" charities, such as Roddicks-in-Need, Hands Across Roddick, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. And for that matter, he only gives them brightly colored monopoly money.

I'm on to you, Roddick! I know your wit and general cordiality is due solely to that earpiece feeding you lines written by Bruce Vilanch . . .

Ok, after watching 2 seconds of Roddick's ESPN interview, he really IS a jackass. What a chump.
It's an embarrassment that he's American - I wonder if Canada would trade us a few bags of old hockey pucks for him?

YES! For the guy who said Roddick was cool... Safin is so much more "cool" than Roddick. Safin knows how to be defiant without whining. He doesn't like the press much, but he handles it so much better than Roddick.

Agreed, Fee. (And also props to Phil, above.)

How much do you think it mattered that there wasn't shot-spot on Vodaphone today? I felt like he would have shut up a lot more if it had been there.

On the other hand, Tsonga was talking smack today, too. Not to the umpires, but to Andy and to himself. I'm certain that got him more worked up than usual.

As for charities.. My mother worked full time until she was 65. Every couple of weekends she would go and help out at the old peoples home my grandma was in, and do it for free.. She would then help kids with their reading at the primary school that I went to as a kid. For free.. She is now 70 and still does it..

So with the money these guys make, surely a few charity events are nice. But dont put them in the human of the year awards.. Sheesh

He's okay, but it seems like a good percentage of what people think is funny from Safin are his malapropisms and quaint foreign-like phrasings, as a non-native speaker. Roddick, as an American, obviously wouldn't get away with pulling off a fake Russian accent.

YES! For the guy who said Roddick was cool... Safin is so much more "cool" than Roddick. Safin knows how to be defiant without whining.
No he doesn't! Safin's got a terrible attitude on the court. Incredibly whiny. The difference is that he rarely (if ever) takes it out on the chair.

And I say this as a fan of BOTH of them. I like personality. They both seem passionate and real to me, both on and off the court.

Safin and Roddick both give great interviews.

I wouldn't say that ball was smack on the line. If it caught the line it caught the back of the line. With the camera angles it was difficult to tell whether the ball was indeed on the line. The vantage point from where we sit and where he stands is different.

I don't mean it to sound like I'm defending Andy because the fact is he was a jerk. Whether the ball was out or not became irrelevant after he went up and talked to the ump and he wouldn't overrule. He said his peace and should have left it at that. He shouldn't have kept harping on the same call and berating the chair the entire match. I'm not sure that Jimmy would be much help in him growing up in this area.

On the other hand, Tsonga was talking smack today, too. Not to the umpires, but to Andy and to himself. I'm certain that got him more worked up than usual.
Are you sure or just taking Roddick's word for it? I thought Tsonga was just pumping himself up - which is ok - and if that does bother Roddick then that's his problem. IMHO Roddick was just grumpy because he was hoping for a workout and got a match.

for a set and a half, yes. for the rest, tsonga died out there. the score speaks for itself. all roddick had to do was get the ball back by the end of the game.
