RODDICK-SAP Open Champion!!!

good job Andy!!! so much for all the haters out there, quick to bash him when he does bad, but when he wins... hmmm where are they all now???:shock::shock:

here's the info for his fans:

Andy captured his third SAP Open title this afternoon, defeating Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-5.

Stepanek, also known as the “worm” for his post match dancing, kicked off the first set on his serve and immediately faced three break points. Andy capitalized on the first opportunity for an early 1-0 lead. Andy advanced with a steady hold for 2-0. The Czech found his footing and fought to get on the scoreboard 1-2. The two continued to trade holds and at 5-4, Andy served out the first set in a little over a half an hour. Andy surged in the first set with seven aces and only one double fault.

In the second set, Radek again started on his serve and was able to save two break points in the early games. Fans at the HP Pavilion were treated to a very competitive second set as each player fought resiliently throughout. Andy capitalized on his third break point opportunity late in the set, and after an hour and twenty minutes of play and 13 aces, he claimed his third SAP Open title 6-4, 7-5.

It was a great week of tennis in San Jose and a great week for Ar.com! Club Roddick members, be sure to check out the SAP Video Diaries from Andy and Team Roddick!

im a roddick fan and even though he won I was somewhat disappointed with the way he played this tournament. He played very conservative on his forehand side. His forehand is a very weak shot now which is really weird since it used to be his bread and buitter shot. To bring out some positive from this match> I liked how he got rid of his slice and used his two hander. I would still like to see him rip that forehand since this conservative play will not do well agtainst players in the top ten.

I laughed a bit when Stepanek came out in a Sharks jersey

Congrats to Andy. He's just lucky the other Andy wasn't here ;)

Exactly, what I was thinking, too! :)

Murray took out Roddick in the semis of the last two consecutive SAP Opens. The only reason Roddick managed to win this one was because Murray decided not to show up to defend his title this time but decided to stay in Europe instead. Even so, Fish should have taken out Roddick in the quarters. Had Roddick down triple-breakpoint at 4-all in the 1st set and then had a set point in tie tiebreak. Fish also outserved Roddick the whole match, with twice as many aces. Fish really should have won that match 6-4, 6-1. Roddick got really, really lucky escaping that one.

Yes, that was hilarious when Stepanek came out in the Sharks jersey. :)

Anyone know how many points he gets? (or if he moves up? :))

He is still #6, no change in his ranking. Not a lot of points for this tournament, especially since he made the semis last year. Can't really expect much reward when the highest ranked player he beat to win the tournament is 31 in the world.

Nice to see him delivering when he needs to, with no Fed in the draw. His game hasn't gone totally in the toilet yet. The question remains: will the old forehand and attitude ever return?

I was impressed with the improvement Roddick made on his backhand.

I watched the match on Fox Sports Network, and I don't know if it's because of the camera but the stadium looked so dim, nothing compared to the brightness of the US Open night events. If, in fact, the lights were fairly dim, then it definitely gives Roddick's serves a huge advantage.

Roddick has kind of quietly put up a fantastic career. At age 25 he's got 24 titles, and will probably hit 500 wins by the end of next year.

After the match Roddick said that his forehand could be a lot better and that his backhand has really improved.

Maybe he'll finally start to flatten out that forehand like the Andy of old instead of looping it over and playing defense all day.

great week for Andy

his tennis got better and better (according to him-- i didn't see the earlier rounds. just the semi and final). also, for age 24, or 25 or really any age, he is one of the best at handling interviews. i know that in the case of tennis athletes, many do not speak english as a first language, but comparing him to other US tennis and non-tennis athletes, he is one of the best. he was on the local talk radio programs about a week ago and was terrific (am 680 san francisco). yesterday, i thought the interviewer after the match was a bit awkward (not really knowing tennis, trying to be funny, etc.), but andy was very smooth and even had a quick response to some high school girls holding up some "will you marry me or take me to the prom" type posters (his answer btw was something like: i think my prom days are behind me-- i don't want to put my parents through that again. . . " specifically did NOT take the oppty to point out that he's currently dating some supermodel. i like his modesty and sense of humor.

he made some spectacular shots off of both sides, but i can kind of see what some of the detractors say about his ground strokes. for most of the match, he either doesn't seem to be hitting it cleanly, or he is playing intentionally a bit too conservatively (or both). generally his shots don't seem to carry the weight that some other players have consistently. on the other hand, his unforced errors are usually quite low and his serve is still massive.

Well, while I can't say his game is all that fun to watch, I will agree he's got one of the more interesting personalities out there. He always has a self-deprecating remark for any situation, it's hilarious. Personally, he'd be a lot more fun to watch if he got his aggressive game back and flattened out that forehand again, but when he's winning, it's hard to switch up mentalities like that. Unfortunately, when it's time to let it lose against some player, it's already too late for him to change strategies.

He said this last time when discussing his koelshriber loss. THen he goes to the sap and hits the same loopy forehand. I dont know what ius wrong with this guy. I cant wait for a top five guy to smoke him maybe this will wake up roddick.
