Andy captured his third SAP Open title this afternoon, defeating Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-5.
Stepanek, also known as the “worm” for his post match dancing, kicked off the first set on his serve and immediately faced three break points. Andy capitalized on the first opportunity for an early 1-0 lead. Andy advanced with a steady hold for 2-0. The Czech found his footing and fought to get on the scoreboard 1-2. The two continued to trade holds and at 5-4, Andy served out the first set in a little over a half an hour. Andy surged in the first set with seven aces and only one double fault.
In the second set, Radek again started on his serve and was able to save two break points in the early games. Fans at the HP Pavilion were treated to a very competitive second set as each player fought resiliently throughout. Andy capitalized on his third break point opportunity late in the set, and after an hour and twenty minutes of play and 13 aces, he claimed his third SAP Open title 6-4, 7-5.
