Roddick ---the savior of serve amd volley

uhhh roddick sucks? such a boring final he has no aggressive plays. as as example, his first match point, 34 strokes, waiting for berdych to make a mistake, and he made nothing happen. im glad he won it though, better than berdych holding up that trophy.
Have to agree about that rally. Andy always tightens up on big points. Hence, last years Wimbledon final. However, saying a top 10 former world #1 sucks from behind a computer screen is hilarious.

I would agree with him being clearly the 2nd best, but not on par with Federer. Ask Roddick if he would trade results with Federer so-far this year. To ask that question is to answer it. That alone will tell you who is having the better year.

If we're talking purely based on points you can argue that Roddick is having a better year. Roddick would gladly trade his year right now for that AO title, I'm sure of it, but overall Roddick has outperformed Federer at nearly every tournament so far.

Good Job Commando! I agree with you 100%. I have been guilty of bashing Roddick myself, so I am not getting on my soapbox. Now people aren't satisfied that he WON, they criticize the WAY he won. Let's just settle down and put this into perspective. Roddick won a Master's Series Tournament and beat an in form Nadal in the semis. Last week he lost a final to an inspired Ljubicic at Indian Wells, who was serving out of his head. Roddick does not have the smoothest or most beautiful flowing game in the world. You can always find issues with his strokes or movement and its easy to criticize his strategy, but he is winning. Lets give him a break.
In bold is my favorite analysis of the situation yet. It truly speaks volumes. Well said, sir

I totally agree!!
Oh, you! :)

Yeah man. There are some people here just full of hate. No matter what Roddick does will never be good enough, they'll always make excuses. Hell, he can go undefeated the rest of the year, and everyone will just be saying that everyone else had a bad year.. Whatevers!!

Whatever hate many of you have, and whatever excuse or comment to try and belittle what his accomplishment was... I only got one thing to say SONY-ERICCSON CHAMP! And I'm sure he's all smiles when he receives that check.
Yup, sometimes there are just people whose minds will never be swayed no matter what happens. This, of course, includes more than just tennis.

In any case, Roddick's the man and will be relevant for years to come. The haters will just have to deal with it. I'm sure Roddick is enjoying his win. All his fans are doing the same, so it really doesn't matter what the haters say

People change and evolve.

Andy really never gives up.

He has been in four grand slam finals with Fed but he just keeps on trying.

In any other era Andy would be a multiple grand slam winner and one of the greatest of all time.

The fact that he just keeps on trying is amazing. He has changed his game once again......to a more Murray style of game or on other days a serve and volley game.

I think this time he is going to do it. He will definitely win eithe the USO or the AO.

i think roddicks tactic was to play conservative against berdman.

against federer it was a diff story - he had to take more risk, and he did..he just missed the bh volley in the TB and missed a second serve return at 15-40 after being too aggressive.

Ljubicic for number1

Ljubicic is clearly the best player of 2010 and owned Roddick last week. Lucky for Roddick, Ljubi got injured this week or Ljubi would be making his run to number 1 now:twisted:

Agree completely. Roddick is one of my favorite players and I pull for him because of all the reasons you listed.

I've been watching Roddick his whole career and I could name half a dozen instances where he gagged at the moment of truth. He just over-thinks the critical moments. There were perfect examples in the Indian Wells final.

So Roddick decided to blast his forehand and go out of his comfort zone for 4-5 years in the pros, then revert back to it randomly, not a coach's decision?
whats your point? he has a big serve, and (had) a big forehand, but still an overall defensive game, he is no natural serve and volleyer, even if he has limited success as of late, so him being a saviour of serve and volley; far from it.

So basically Roddick will never catch a break, whats even more funny is at the moment if the race rankings still existed he would be number 1 with 2450 ahead of Federer at 2225. Sure Federer is doing his usual tank jobs at the masters but some sort of credit should be given. Complain all you want but currently his game is currently winning. He played a match against Berdych to win, sorry you all were upset. Whats more funny is half of you praise longer points and longer rallies yet you get them and you complain? So do we mindless ball bashing power fests..if that is the case line up Gulbis with Davydenko and have them just smack the ball in straight lines back and forth all night. Seriously cut the guy some slack, he is playing some of the best tennis he has since what 2006..I hope he wins a slam this year just to watch this forum implode.

He has worked on his volleys big time! Much much impoved. And to beat Nadal serve and volleying really gives this style of at some legitamacy.

He didn't serve and volley against Nadal though. He served...and he volleyed...but he didn't serve and volley. Let me break this down. It's very simple.

serve and volley = serve and come into the net right away

what roddick did was:
serve and blast a forehand or two, then come into the net if necessary.

saying he's the savior of S&V is ridiculous at best!

Yes he did. He came RIGHT in on his second serve.

NT TIMES:

He (Roddick) also started to follow his second serve to the net and put away volleys. While many tour players have difficulty with Roddick’s second serve — not to mention his first — Nadal is not one of them. So Roddick ran in after his second serve five times in the third set, and won four of those points.

Asked what it was like to charge the net against Nadal, Roddick compared it to “driving into head-on traffic.”

Ljublucky will never benefit from another choke fom Roddick. At least your Ljub will remember his wins & choked matches against Federer (his daddy).

How much of the match did you watch?? Roddick played serve-and-volley numerous times, especially on his second serve, and with surprising success. Notably, he saved the first break point he faced with a daring second - serve serve-and-volley play, and played multiple serve-and-volley points to dig out a couple of his crucial holds in the third set. "Savior of serve and volley" may be going too far, but your post is equally far off (though in the opposite direction).

Yeah it's a bit too far. But surprisingly he used it more in that match than anyone else in the top 10....plus I also think it was the key to beating Nadal.

Besides these days I'll settle for a serve, aproach & volley any day !

although roddick did serve and volley many points immediately as you say....I do not agree that is th proper definition of the word.

McEnroe clearly was a serve amd volleyer. He did not come In immediately after every point. In many instances he would hit an approach shot in no mans land and then charge the net .
