Rodrigo's string reviews

Thanks for all your effort, really helpful. I am looking for a less expensive substitue for pro hurricane tour. Of the strings I've played with so far B5E is too underpowered, and BHBR was too springy. Based on your experiences what string plays most like PHT? I really like the way it plays stiff, spinny, controlled, and powerful all at the same time.

I am tempted by Pro Tornado and Spiky Shark. What about Blue Gear...others? Thanks.

p.s. maybe there is not substitute and I'll just have to pay the $215 per reel, but I'd really like to get that down to $100-$150 if I can.

Where does Vokle Cyclone fit in ? maybe compared to RPM blast ?? I bought a set because a girl at TW recommended it when i called.

Hey guys.. I have been trying many different strings this summer so I decided to write down in a few sentences what I thought of each string. For me, value is very important so I gave each string a number out of 100 of what its value is IMO.

BTW, I'm a 5.0, agressive baseliner who uses a Head MG Radical.. If you guys have some questions, I'll try my best to answer them

Babolat RPM Blast
- This string is overhyped. It plays great for the first 4 hours and then loses tension FAST. Good spin, doesn’t play too stiff compared to other polys and I had high expectations coming in and was disappointed. About 80% of my friends and people who I know tried it said they were disappointed. When considering the price, this string gets an 85/100 in my book.

Kirschbaum pro line2- A pretty good string that holds tension well and has good control and pop. I like that it comes in both red and black color. When considering the price, I give this string a 90/100 in my book

Msv focus hex- Tried this string and it did not meet my expectations. It felt very plasticky and gave some good spin. The string lacked in overall performance when compared to other textured polys such as Tornado, Turbo, Blue Gear, etc. When considering the price, I give this a 91/100 in my book.

Mantis power poly- Another string that I thought played just Ok. It felt very awkward and it didn’t play like a poly. Control was poor and it had too much uncontrollable power. When considering the price, I give this an 87/100 in my book.

Polyfibre TCS- The softest poly I ever tried. Excellent spin production, holds tension ok and durability is not as good as other polys. Performance wise, this is among the best strings I ever tried. I broke this string within 6 hours but for those 6 hours, I was in heaven. If you are looking for something as soft as a syn gut but with good control and spin, try this. Considering the price, I give this a 91/100.

Polystar energy- A pretty unique co-polyester string that provided me with excellent feel and touch for a poly. This string played remarkably soft and had tons of power, maybe even a bit too much at times. Control was average and it held tension average to above-average compared to other polys. It seemed that every time the ball left my racquet, it exploded out and my opponent commented how much quicker the ball was flying than my other racquet. Spin was good and my volleys were improved with the feel of this string. Considering the price, I give this a 94/100

Signum Pro Tornado- An excellent co-poly string that really holds tension remarkably well. Spin was above average and the power was there. Overall, I really enjoyed this string but feel the price on sets is a bit overpriced. Otherwise, I Would recommend this string if you like RPM but feel it looses tension to quick. Considering price, I give this a 92/100

Poly star turbo- I read that this is the same string as the Energy but has like 16 edges or something like that. Well it does because this string provided me A LOT of spin and my balls were pretty heavy when coming of the stringbed. Control was good and power was average for a poly. It held tension pretty well and overall I was pleased with this string. I prefer the Energy over the Turbo but only by a small margin. Considering the price, I give this a 93/100.

Klip K-boom- Used this string exclusively for about 2.5 years. Great string that gave excellent control and spin. It held tension better than the Cyber Flash and power level was just average. Since I gave up on this string, I tried many other “Lux clones” and this string is overpriced and doesn’t perform nearly as well as some of the others. Considering price, this string gets an 84/100 in my book.

Tecnifibre black code- Very good string with excellent spin product. Power is good and it holds tension above average compared to other polys. Excited to try out the new Tecnifibre string that is coming out soon. Believe this was one of the first black polys that hit the market. Considering price, this string gets a 93/100 in my book.

Genesis typhoon- A string that really exceeded my expectations. Power was high, maybe a bit too much but it held tension very well and the spin was good. Would of liked a bit more control but I was very pleased with the way this string played. Considering price, I would give it a 93/100.

Genesis Spin X- Another great string that really complements my game really well. I love the ball-pocketing and the control I get from this string. Everything seems just right and it holds tension very well for a poly. Considering price, I give this a 92/100.

Signum pro poly plasma
- A very low-powered mutel feel that even felt a bit mushy for me. It held tension exceptionally well and provided me with excellent control. I really didn’t feel that string is a high-performance string and I expected more from this string after reading so much positive feedback. Considering price, I give this string a 92/100.

Kirschbaum Spiky Shark- A good string for spin, but nothing special. Holds tension pretty well and it is not stiff by any means. I think there are better strings than this in the same price range and this may be my favorite string from Kirschbaum. Considering price, I give this a 88/100

NOTE: This is my opinion and my thoughts from my experience. I'm sure same will share the same opinion while others will have an entirely different experience with each string.

NEW Reviews:

Poly Star Strike- A pretty good poly that holds tension better than all of the other Poly Star strings. It has pretty good spin potential but it lacked the pinpoint accuracy that I enjoyed with the energy. I also felt that it provided me with less power than the polystar energy.. Not a bad string by any means. Considering price, I give this a 90/100

Tecnifibre Red Code- Great control-oriented poly that just plays "solid" in every department. I felt that it held average and it gave pretty good spin. In regards to feel, it played softer than most of the other stiffer polys like Luxilon and kirschbaum. Considering price, I give this a 91/100

Polyfibre Hexa Blade- This string is now among the top 3 "textured" strings I have ever tried and probably top 7 among all strings I ever tried. It broke at the 15 hr mark but I was bloody impressed with the spin and feel of this string. First off, it plays and feels very soft, yet gives insane spin. It was low-powered, good control and it held tension OK. I was hitting some of the heaviest balls ever with these strings and I will consider switching to this string after my testing is complete. Considering price, I give this a 93/100.

Solinco Tour Bite- Great string for spin but average spin potential. I had pretty high expectations coming in with this string but thought it did not meet all its hype. It has a good amount of power for a poly, good durability and the feel and comfort for a poly is average. When considering price, I give it a 89/100.

Volkl Cyclone- A pretty good string with good spin potential, good control and holds tension average compared to other polys. This string lasted for about 12 hours before breaking. Power is average, feel and comfort is also average. Considering the price, there really should not be a reason one wont try it. When considering price, this string is a 93/100 in my book.

Genesis Hexonic- A very nice spin-oriented co-poly that is low-powered and has great control. Holds tension pretty good and I was amazed how much control this string gave me for a shaped poly. It felt stiffer than some of the other strings I have tried but since both Poly Star and Polyfibre are pretty darn soft, I would still say this one is "soft" when compared to the luxilons and kirschbaums. When you consider the price (especially in reels), this string is a 91/100 in my book.

Luxilon Adrenaline- This string has been out for a while but I haven't been able to get a chance to give you shot yet. This string felt similar to Kirschbaum competition but I havent used that one in about 2 years. The adrenaline is nice and soft, has good control, mediocre spin, holds tension better than some of the other Lux strings but is nothing special. If this string was $100 per reel, I may consider it but this string is like a cyber flash but priced 2x higher. It has a fair amount of poly, decent comfort and feel and broke in about 8 hours for me. Considering price, I give this a 88/100 in my book.

Pro Supex Blue Gear Ultra Spin-
Stringing: Easier than the regular blue gear as it is softer. Still not as easy as syn guts but not that bad. Took me a few min longer than the typical stringjob.

Spin: Very comparable to Blue Gear. I think this string produces as much spin 10 hours in as it does during the first 1 hour. The original blue gear "ridges" sort of wear off after like 6-7 hours or so.. I'd give it a 9/10

Durability: On about 14 hours and its great so far. Would give it a 9/10

Control: Better than the original as I can actually control my balls. Not as good pinpoint accuracy as regular round strings but still pretty good. 8.5/10

Power: This string has some pop with is and would consider the power level to be average. I'd give it a 8/10

Comfort: This is after all a textured poly but it doesnt play as stiff as some Kirschbaums and Luxilons. I'd give it a 8/10 for comfort and feel

This string is great if you have an aggressive baseline game and not recommended for serve and volleyers. My slice serves out-wide were amazing as I had about 8 aces in my match when I typically average about 2-3.

Overall I'd give this string a 90/100

OK, rodrigo. If you took the PRICE out of the equation and consideration, what would be your top 3 string from this review ? thanks

Thanks for all your effort, really helpful. I am looking for a less expensive substitue for pro hurricane tour. Of the strings I've played with so far B5E is too underpowered, and BHBR was too springy.

Hybrid them. I used B5E17/BHBR17 and plays very well. The B5E provides the bite and the BHBR adds softness and pop.

Also if you think B5E is too underpowered, just string it at a lower tension.

Torres,,,is Vokle Cyclone any good ?

2 New String Reviews

Still in Black Select: So I have completed testing the Still in Black Select string. Stringing this string was like any other poly. As this is not a textured or shaped poly, it was a lot easier to string than some of the crazy twisted strings out there which made me enjoy stringing up this string. The color which they say is a dark blue looks awesome in my racquet and is not a color I have seen before in a poly which is nice.
My overall impressions of this string is that I would rate this among the top 3 polys I have tried to date and I have tried probably about 25 or so of them. What I liked most about it the tension stability and good blend of comfort and control for a poly. This string held tension pretty good (broke it after about 20 hours) and is fairly low-powered string with very good feel and comfort for a poly. It offered good control, decent spin and played very nicely. I was able to play some of my best tennis in a long time with this string and the only thing that would make this string better would be spin, but you can’t get everything with a string, lol. If you like control poly’s with
decent power and comfort, this may be a good string to consider trying out.

Tourna Big Hitter Blue Rough: This string was average to string up as it is textured and is not your ordinary round poly. The color, blue looks nice in most racquets and can’t complain about that. I enjoyed this string overall but felt it played just average overall IMO, nothing outstanding. From a spin perspective, it was good, for power, it was average for a poly and it held tension average as well. Overall, this string was just average. I felt as though it did not offer great control and from a durability perspective, it broke after about 12 hours.

Wow, so Still in Black comes out of the gate hot. Good to see this thread again.

Yea, it's a very nice string but I know you have a sensitive arm (or at least I assume that based on your posts) so stay away from it! Definately not the softest of strings out there!!

Great job with your very informative threads and posts!

Yeah, my arm is sensitive in the cooler weather. I'll be back into polys come Spring. Thanks for letting me know about the softness, I'll have to take a pass on this one.

I can't wait to try some of the strings you really liked if you felt BHBR was just average. For me, it was hard to imagine a string could be better, but I am pretty new to polys and have a lot to learn.

Give the TF ProRedcode a try.

Average is not such a bad thing.
BHBR does many things well and has few faults at a great price.
You have to give to get.
Most strings that give superior performance in one aspect have to sacrifice something else.

I'd like to. I am kind of gradually working my way back into playing, and right now I'm only playing when I go to Florida every month or two. One thing I liked about the BHBR is that it didn't seem to go dead sitting in my racquet for several weeks without hitting. I understand that some polys will go dead over time, even if not hit, so that could be an issue for me.

I tried WC Scorpion and thought it was ok. B5E seemed way underpowered in a full bed, even at 42#. I loved the combination of spin and pop in the BHBR. I am playing exclusively on hartru, and it produces a heavy ball, plus I can control the trajectory.

Sorry for not updating this thread but I have been busy with everything but tennis of late but finally got around to testing many new strings over the past 6 months and here are some of the feedbacks:

Signum firestorm: Tested this as a full bed strung at 56 lbs on a Head Radical Pro racquet and was fairly easy to string. No crazy shapes or textures made this a breeze compared to other strings.. Hit with it for about 12 hours before cutting it out. Overall, string was pretty good. TONS of power, poor control, good tension stability was noted.. Spin was just OK and the feel was very, very good for a poly.. For me personally, too much power and not enough control but for a player seeking feel, comfort, touch in a poly (very hard to find), it is definately worth taking a look at... Have a friend who tried in a hybrid with gut and it played VERY NICE.. Worth a shot in my book

Genesis True Grit This is the latest string I tested and was lucky enough to win it for free from the Genesis Facebook page. String is twisted which made it slightly more difficult to string than others but overall wasn't too bad.. I really LIKED this string overall and had it strung for about 9 hours before breaking it.. It just has a very unique blend of power and control which suits my game very well, holds tension better than most other polys and still plays kinda soft which was a surprise after the difficulty stringing. I played some of my best tennis in a while with it and was hitting some great drop shots and volleys with it as well.. Overall, very positive experience and definately worth a shot in my book as well..

Tourna Big Hitter Black 7
This is another shaped poly, not twisted though so fairly easy to string except for that black color which has gotten tiring for me, lol.. String plays the same as the Topspin Max Rotation which is priced slightly cheaper than this one.. Good spin, good control, average durability (lasted only 5 hours) but I prefer to save $ so for my folks that like 7 sided polys, I'll just stick with the copy cat topspin max rotation...String works best for the agressive baseliner as it lacks feel and touch needed for the net player.. Good price/performance ratio makes it a string to put on your wish-list but if you like soft polys with feel, go with signum hyperion or genesis black magic instead

Prince Tour XS
Had this string in my racquet for just 2 hours and really disliked it.. Just not my cup of tea and did not get any pop that I like.. Luckily, got a set for free from a fellow stringer and friend but at $13 or so, I'll take a pass on this in the future.. Did nothing spectacular and due to lack of adequate playtesting, cannot comment any further

These are MY opinions but I'll do my best to answer any questions... Did test another 4-5 strings and will post my take on those in the coming days or week..

Nice to hear about the True Grit. I'll have to give it a whirl. Can't wait for the next batch of reviews. Don't wait a 2 years this time! :)

I received my test sample of true grit and I strung it few days ago...I will play test it tomorrow and post a review soon..my initial impressions were that it did feel muted and very comfy for a poly but this was just light hitting against a wall I did not want to kill the string bed till tomorrow since i tend to notch strings very quickly I was kind of babying it...

I usually could care less about looks but it does look amazing in pure drive though since the type of blue they used matches exactly blue accents of 2012 pure drive

Was that the string forum test?

haha, I won't let you down this time with a 2 yr lapse in reviews.. keep up the good work with your review threads!

No I was just trying to stir up some heated arguments on the forum LOL... personally I got a reel of Energy and never looked back, tried out some more strings for fun recently and got tired really quick and had to return to it

Great job by the way, very nice assessment, didn't get overly complicated

No more PolyStar available, eh?

comparison

This thread was a great read. Thanks so much. I have a comparison question for you. How would you compare Tour Bite, Tornado and Typhoon?

This thread was a great read. Thanks so much. I have a comparison question for you. How would you compare Tour Bite, Tornado and Typhoon?

Tour bite is the stiffest, with the best spin potential, but dies fast. Control is amazing, perhaps my favorite.

Tornado is medium stiffness, decent spin, and great tension stability. Does everything pretty good, with no single standout quality or downside, aside from playing very consistent over time.

Typhoon is the softest of the three (still medium stiffness compared to "soft" polys), good spin and between the two in tension loss. Best in terms of all-court feel.

If you want spin and control: tour bite
If you want feel and power: typhoon
If you want long lasting tension stability: tornado

This thread was a great read. Thanks so much. I have a comparison question for you. How would you compare Tour Bite, Tornado and Typhoon?

Your welcome amigo.

They are all similar but different strings.. similarity as that all are polys that are textured and/or shaped.. All are durable. Typhoon is the softest of the 3 followed by tornado and tour bite.. Tour bite gives good spin but is stiff and loses tension quick.. Tornado is in between the 2 with good feel, spin, control and holds tension good.. Typhoon is soft, amazing pop and power and also holds tension... All 3 are worth a shot and when you factor in price, Typhoon is the best bang for buck.. Tornado sells at almost $15 a set, ouch!!

Anyone try Wilson Spin Cycle? Curious how it compares to strings like Twisted Razor (similar construction), or any of the polys being mentioned.

The price on spin cycle in a reel is tough to pass up.

Thank you JT_2eighty and rodrigoamaral. I really appreciate the feedback. I've been using a full bed of Tour Bite in my Youtek IG Prestige Pro strung at 52lbs. for the past two years. I'd like to try something similar but a little softer and with a tad bit more power as the Tour Bite is starting to wreck my shoulder if I play to often. I think I'll try both the Tornado and Typhoon to see which one works best for me. Do you think I should string the Tornado and Typhoon at the same tension?

how about trying the soft version of Tour Bite? Sounds like it's exactly what you're looking for.

Yes, try them at the same tension as they are pretty close in softness..

Awesome Thread!

I am always trying out new polys, and this thread has a great list.
A lot of strings that I was on the fence about buying are on here, and this helped my decision a lot.

Definitely worth a Sticky - Ill be back!

Should I string Tornado and Typhoon a tad bit tighter then Tour Bite since these two strings are a little softer? Or should I string them the same as I've been stringing Tour Bite? For what it's worth I'm playing a polarized Youtek IG Prestige Pro with a full bed of Solinco Tour Bite 16L at 52lbs. and it's been wrecking my shoulder as of late.

I would probably string at the same tension so you can properly compare them side by side. Both Tornado and Typhoon are softer and more livelier than Tour Bite so an increase in tension may work but I'd go with the same tension and then go from there..

Well I've tried both the Typhoon and Tornado for almost two weeks now. I feel that the Typhoon was a lot stiffer then the Tornado. It felt just like the Tour Bite I was using. Stiff with very little power. And the texture wore away in a couple of hours. To me the Typhoon is just another cheap discount string. As they say... you get what you pay for. The Tornado on the other hand was great. At least for the first few hours anyhow. To me the Tornado was softer and held it's tension longer then the Typhoon. I felt the Tornado also had a bit more pop as well. Overall the Tornado blows Typhoon away in all categories. But like the Typhoon it wears very quickly and just becomes a round poly in a matter of a few hours. And after about 4 times out hitting with it I lost a lot of control and my balls started to scatter. It's very disappointing to me that I found exactly what I was looking for in the Tornado but the durability was horrendous. And considering the price of this string. I can't imagine restringing my racket every week or two. Any suggestions on another string on the market that plays like the Tornado but has more durability and doesn't cost as much? Has anyone compared the Tornado to the Topspin Cyber Flash?

Silverstring is great for control, feel, comfort and pop. But it lacks in spin esp. for a poly.

I didn't read the whole thread, but I'd like to ask if you are stringing your own racquets? You don't have to sweat the price tag of a set of string if you don't have to pay for labor.

Other than that, I haven't tried Tornado but I really like Cyber Flash. It has good power, comfort, and spin. And it costs mid-range for a poly. I hybrid mine with Dunlop Hexy Fiber and it's a great combination.

I string my own racquets. I play two to three times a week. And that's all Tornado is worth. So I'd have to restring every week with it. I just can't bring myself to doing that. There has to be something out there just as good that lasts longer. I'm going to give Silverstring a try in the 1.20 version. I know some people say that Silverstring isn't great at providing spin. But to me, with good technique and an opened string pattern racket "16 x 19" one should have no problem at all achieving lots of spin with this string.

rodrigoamaral,

Have you ever played a full bed of Silverstring? Any input on that one?

I did and thought it played pretty well overall.. Soft, comfortable, good feel and power.. IMO, plays very similar to Pro Supex Big Ace Micro which is cheaper between the 2 strings...

Recently got a chance to playtest the new signum pro firestorm string.. here is my review:

String was strung on Head YouTek Radical Pro at 57 lbs.

Stringing: This is definitely easier to string than most other textured/shaped polys and was a please to string compared to some other
Ground Strokes: This string played relatively soft and surprised me quite a bit. Nice blend of power and held up well for the groundies.
Volleys: Textured strings typically do not aid in volleys but my volleys were still pretty good. Pretty good feel with these bad boys..
Serves: Served not as good as usual but don’t think I can use the string excuse for this one. Have been having some shoulder pain of late

Power: 9/10 Average.
Spin: 8/10
Durability: 8/10 Broke after 7 hours
Control: 8.5/10 Pretty good control
Comfort/Feel- 9/10
Tension Stability- 8/10 Felt like this could have been a bit better
Price Performance- 6/10 way too expensive.. should be $130 a reel at most IMO

Just recently tried the genesis trionic, one strings carbon nrg, double ar diablo and kirschbaum max power... will be posting my reviews in the coming days for those still following my thread :)

I haven't tried any of those, so I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts.
