Roger Federer 2nd highest paid athlete in the world

Highest paid athlete per diem is Judge Judy (if gavel pounding were a sport). She apparently tapes all her shows for the year in about 50 days and earned 45 million dollars last year.

When he retires, he will not make half of what he makes as an active player. That's why he won't retire anytime soon. Federer is a huge spender so he kind of needs to stay active.

BTW, Tiger Woods would be blowing Federer out of the water in terms of money. But Woods lost a ton of endorsements after his incident with his wife a few years back.

Federer's endorsement deals is the reason he's the highest paid. In terms of actual accumulated income from tennis alone over 14 years, he's earned $77 million.
Mike Tyson in his prime days made more than that in just 1 year.

I'd like to see what players outside of the top 4 are earning in terms of endorsements and tennis earnings.

^You just posted 6 times in a row...LOL.

Federer earned $71 million in the last year, that is HUGE.

It's what you earn outside of your sport. Federer is squeaky clean! Void of controversy! :) Plus he speaks great English which is important.

Wow, Federer's endorsement deals is worth $65 million.
while Nadal's endorsement deals is worth only $21 million.
I wonder how much more Fed's Nike endorsement is compared to Nadal's.

Nadal is more popular than Federer with women of 37 years of age and up. :)

Forbes methedology is stupid. Counting earnings between June 2012 and June 2013 seems so random. You can basically pick any month from a previous year to start counting to skew your results that way.

You should go by earnings or projected earnings within a calander year. That's what Sports Illustrated does, and that's why Floyd Mayweather remains the highest paid athlete in the world, and will end 2013 that way, like he did 2012. His second fight this year with Saul "Caneleo" Alvarez is expected to be a megafight that could earn him in excess of 50 million dollars. Even without endorsements, no athlete is going to make more money than Mayweather this year

I notice tennis players get paid the lowest, in terms of Salary/Winnings.
Football players get paid the most.

Sharapova is listed at #22 with 29 million, ahead of Nole(#28 ) and Nadal(#30). She makes more in endorsement than Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Alex Rodriguez and Tony Romo, combined !

Serena is way down the list at #68 and Li Na is at #85.

Really? I did not know that.

Can you give some examples?

that's because tennis players only get paid 12% of the pot. Other sports may their athletes a lot more. NFL for example pays 50%.

And that's the reason for him dragging himself on courts and spoiling a reputation

Also people need to remember Federer, lives in Switzerland which is a tax haven for the rich. A lot of tennis players from Europe especially the French tennis players such as Monfils, Gasquet, Bartoli, ect. live in Switzerland because they don't pay taxes.
So since Federer lives in Switzerland he gets to keep almost all his money.

People say Federer makes a lot of money because he speaks English well but that's only a part of it. The other important parts is Federer is handsome, he isn't drop dead gorgeous like Tommy Haas but he's decent looking.
Federer has also kept a very clean image, the public doesn't know much about him he's very private. All people know is he's married to Mirka and he has two twin daughters and two loving parents.

So Federer's squeaky clean image of being the good Swiss family man is very attractive to advertisers.

Also, since Federer is multilingual and he can speak Swiss German, and French along with English he can reach more demographic markets.

Off the top of my head... Federer endorsements are:
Nike, Wilson, Rolex, Gillette, Audi, Lindor balls.

Just this week my 8 year-old daughter saw Sharapova for the first time, and her first comment was, "Is she known for her beauty?" I don't really agree, but she clearly has a big appeal.

I personally think that roger will make the same or even more moneybafter he retires. Why? Rolex will keep him in their list and make him a legend, as nike will do, the RF brand will stay, as air jordan. And he will be fully available to promote products

Definitely, Rolex is after all marketed for the middle aged well off guy who needs a fast car and an expensive watch to compensate for his declining testosterone.

He's the greatest athlete of his generation, anything he gets paid is well deserved. Tennis players in comparison to other sports are underpaid, look at where Nadal and Djokovic are, and they are all time greats.

I am still waiting for you to give some examples to backup your statement that Federer is a big spender.

Meanwhile you go down further in the ranking and you got guys making NOTHING.

Is there a discrepancy in pay in this sport or what?

No wonder so many of these guys ***** and complain

At least in other sports even the guys that don't play a lot of minutes (basketball, football, baseball etc) make a great living

And Fed was still whining about Money in Basel just last year if I remember correctly.

The most impressive on the list is money mayweather. He earns all his money without endorsements. If he fights twice a year he is the highest paid athlete. If the list only included prize money/contract money he would crush everybody.

So Fed earned almost $200,000 per day, every single day of the last year. Not bad considering a lot of people don't even earn that in total for the whole year.

I remember hearing somewhere that people who are around the 100-300 in the world (and below) mark are severely underpaid.

I doubt the accuracy of the numbers, because I think Federer and some of the other top names are paid under the table guarantees to show up at tournaments -- especially now that Federer has no obligations anymore, I believe the numbers are actually higher than what Forbes has posted.

I'm sure Federer has earned three quarters of a billion since he turned pro and his investments have undoubtedly turned that into a much higher number. I didn't think he was in Tiger's league, but that's obviously wrong.

It hadn't occurred to me until i Read the Forbes article that a major motivation for Federer to be at the back end of tournaments these days is to keep himself on the public's radar and thus keep that money train rolling for as long as possible.
