To be honest it's interesting people are still talking about it. As I remember many Federer fans agreed that Federer's goal in Wimbledon 2019 was to beat Nadal in the semifinals, and it doesn't really matter what happens in the final. Well, so they got exactly what they wanted. Why complain now?

AO14 final is the most horrible loss Ive been through. Its soon 6 years ago and I dont feel any better about it. What is good is that there isnt many reminders of that match. That can also maybe make it harder to get over as I try to avoid it and not deal with it. Maybe being in here and a 100 40-15 reminders every day force you to get gradually over it.
Is this true? I have a hard time to imagine that even one Federer fan said it wouldn’t matter what happens in a Wimbledon final, let alone "many".

Only Coria's loss to Gaudio in the final of 2004 RG comes close but both those guys were playing in their maiden (and only) Slam final whilst Federer is an ATG with many Slams under his belt playing another ATG also with many Slams under his belt. The loss is unprecedented and will hurt and haunt him for a long time to come.
Small wonder Djokovic wasn't invited to the Laver Cup this year!

I understand, however Rafa didn't have match points in that match.
It hurts a lot less when I know my guy (usually Fed) had no chance, as opposed to having chances and squandering them.

For me that was the most crushing defeat, also Rafas reaction was the most heartbreaking of all losses. He didnt have matchpoint but it was really bad in other ways.

If I were a Nadal fan, I'd think that the AO17 loss would be the worst. Up a break in the 5th vs a guy whose heart he'd gleefully broken from 2008-14.
Although since he's assured to wind up at 30 GS titles, I don't think that Nadal fans and Fedfans can measure failures in the same way.

It wasnt, as Rafa fans used to Rafa beating Fed. Federer won that one and thats ok. They've been rivals for that long. Never seen Federer as Rafas worst rival, thats Novak. I was over that match less than 24h after the loss.

Why can't he win 5-6 more French Opens? No reason.
The tour is so titled in favor of the Clay season that his strategy is unbeatable. He skips large portions of the year and still gets seeded #2 or #3 in every Slam because of all the clay points.
He could easily do this another 5 years, there is no one to consistently challenge him on clay.
And for as bad as he has been on hard courts...he just won the US Open with the help of an extremely weak draw, and do we honestly believe this will be the last time that will happen?
I see him getting 5-7 more French titles, and 2-3 more outside of that (likely US and/or Wimbledon)

So was it worse for you when Rafa lost in straights to Djoker at AO19, than when he blew a 3-1 lead over Fed in the 5th in 2017?

It would be like Nadal wasting 2 match points on his serve in the RG 2020 final to equal the slam record of 20.
But i do foresee similar difficulties for Rafa as he approaches/overtake the 20 slam number: as you age, nerves get tighter. We actually already had a glimpse of it 2 weeks ago, although the result made for some collective amnesia.

The Novak match for me was much more frightening. But I knew Rafa was less than 2 months post surgery so I didnt have much hope. I was surprised Rafa lost in 2017, I thought it would be an easy match. But somehow I felt Federer deserved to win a match like that.
I am a person that prefer to look forward and focus on the good things. I think Rafa have a chance to win AO20 for example. I even think Rafa can beat Novak there. Things change. Nothing on tour stays the same and we never know what will happen.
AO14 final is probably the only really tough loss for me. I mean, we are here at 19. I cannot complain and I cannot expect Rafa to win everything. Losses make the wins more sweet. This is how sport is. Would be boring if one player wins everything. I started to support Rafa long time ago and I never even thought or hoped he would win this much. But, here we are.

Novak was totally blameless for that Fed choke.
He had already conceded defeat at 40-15 after these 2 aces.
He simply played these 2 points by instinct, in total resignation almost.
Which makes what ensued so crazy and mind-boggling.

It's false to say Nadal had no chances though. If Nadal was in good form and didn't get injured he would have great chances. Wawrinka is not Federer or Djokovic.
