I sympathize with the way they handle the whole deal. Being Roger Federer he could have Madonna singing the Ave Maria but instead did a very private, small wedding.
Now that Roger and Mirka are not longer living in sin, maybe God would allow him to win against Rafa on clay lol (j/k I'm not religious at all)

I get the point but you usually sing Ave Maria at funerals, not weddings ;).

Minutes after Roger and Mirka got married, Nadal was married to his long time companion, F. Lopez.

LMAO! Hahahahhahahaha! I think Verdasco and Lopez go better together though after their segment on the Tennis Channel. "Feliciano he likes..."

Brooke Shields was involved in the hollywood scene. I dont think Marriage to Mirka will be that big of a deal to Roger. Having a kid is another story however. Andre's focus went off of tennis onto a different scene for a few years there when he was with Brooke.
Was it also the drug scene or was that only true for Tatum O'Neil?

congrats to them....

I dont understand why people are saying this explains Roger falling away in the last set of the last few matches??

Just posted on his website today. Congrats Roger, hopefully it won't distract him from tennis!!!

Aw maaan, no SPOILER alert?! That's just wrong. I had it recorded, but you saved me the trouble. 'preciate it, Mansewerz. Not sure if that was intentional, but...yeah, thanks a lot, man.

Mods, could you please do something about this? At least put it in the results section?

Thanks'-),

Oh, and funny stuff up there with Raf and Feli running shirtless with the wind in their hair. What song do I hear? Is that the theme from Chariots of Fire by Vangelis or ... 'It's raining men'?

Well, congrats to the Federers! Very sweet couple....God bless them...wish them well.

THis just in....on the wedding night, Roger had her up a set and a break, was about to close it out, but fell apart in the last few minutes ;-).

Congratulations Mirka and Roger!
Knew he would do it, wouldn't expect anything different from Federer. He is afterall a gentleman. :)

Interesting observations..... it seems to me that getting married to a very attractive woman, such as Bridget Wilson (and too Brooke - she's pretty gross now), will hurt the career of a pro tennis player. Marrying a woman of more moderate aesthetic appeal such as Steffi Graf will not be so disastrous for a tennis player.

In that's the case, then Roger definitely has nothing to worry about.

Moderate?? Are you kidding?? :-?

This will either clear his head for winning two more Slams (at least) or he'll end the year at #3 or worse.

This isn't the best time for him to get married. Roger is a type of guy who will probably care about his family and baby, which in turn will definitely effect his tennis result. We can expect an even more drastic decline in Roger's career after this.

You DO realise that nothing changes when you are married right? You spend much more time on your relationship when you are dating rather than when you are married?

The only thing that could affect his game is having to cope with a new born, but it is not as if he will have to manage that on his own. I'm sure he will have hired help.

Alot of sports people have said that their desire to win became subdued when they had children which is so it should be your children should be the mot important thing to you but that doesn't mean he wont win again!

Honeymoon on hold for newly-wed Federer

World No 2 takes up wild card in Monte Carlo Masters after surprise wedding

By Paul Newman in Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo may sound like the perfect honeymoon destination, but this was probably not what Mirka Vavrinec had envisaged. Having married in Switzerland on Saturday, the bride flew here yesterday with her groom so that he could go straight back to work. Business is business, especially when your husband is the world's most famous tennis player and there is an important tournament in the offing.

Vavrinec and Roger Federer, who is playing here in this week's Monte Carlo Masters, met nine years ago at the Sydney Olympics. She has been his constant companion ever since, helping to run his business affairs and supporting him from the side of courts around the world. The couple recently announced they were expecting their first child this summer and on Saturday they married in Federer's home town of Basle.

The wedding was a closely kept secret, with Federer making a simple announcement on his official website. "Dear fans," he said. "Earlier today, in my hometown of Basle, surrounded by a small group of close friends and family, Mirka and I got married. It was a beautiful spring day and an incredibly joyous occasion. Mr and Mrs Roger Federer wish all of you a happy Easter weekend."

News of the wedding came as a surprise to almost everyone. "I had no idea it was happening," one of Federer's closest associates said here yesterday. "I texted him as soon as I heard. He texted back to say he was over the moon and that it was the best day of his life."

The wedding probably explains why Federer had initially chosen to miss this week's tournament, which is the traditional start of the European clay-court season. On Thursday last week, however, the world No 2, presumably with the blessing of his bride-to-be, successfully requested a wild card. Federer joins nine of the world's top 10 players, including Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. Those two yesterday interrupted their preparations to play an exhibition match to publicise the tournament.

That means you should be happy right? This means he won't break the record and Pete's record is once again safe.

After nine years as a couple, it is about time Mirka made an honest man out of Fed. ;o)

In addition to his slight (and inevitable) latter twenties decline, Fed will have to contend with the distractions of a wife and kid. That seems to always take a considerable toll on top players who must be extremely single minded/focused/selfish to maintain their highest level of play.

Sampras' GS record is now officially safe (unless Rafa, Murray and Joker suddenly disappear.) ;o)

LOL. Stumbled on this ancient thread, nice predictions (y)
