An interesting article:

http://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/blog...t=As3kakQDr1So4rS86kUE6lI4v7YF?urn=ten-wp2430

They showed up at each other's tournaments, texted congratulatory messages and had a good-natured rivalry about who would win the most majors. What had first been a glorified photo op for two of IMG and Nike's biggest stars had blossomed into a friendship. Now, Roger Federer and Tiger Woods are no longer pals.

As Jon Wertheim details in this week's Sports Illustrated, Federer has distanced himself from Woods after Tiger's infamous Thanksgiving night incident in 2009. Though both men have been careful not to play up any rift, there has been a noticeable chill. Wertheim notes that Federer and his wife have socialized with Tiger's ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, and compares the freeze-out to what Barack Obama did to Jeremiah Wright during the 2008 presidential campaign.

The relationship felt forced from the outset. Whether that was because it was a friendship for the media's benefit or simply because Federer and Tiger have robotic public personas and are tough to get a read on is anyone's guess. I'd guess it was the former. The bond of being the best in their respective sports and wearing a swoosh on their shirts gave the two some common ground. Other than that, what did they really have in common?

Tiger was a womanizer. Federer seems to be a dedicated family man. One lived in Florida, the other in Switzerland. Maybe they were friends by the loose, superficial Hollywood definition of friendship, but I doubt Tiger was popping over to Roger's house on Sunday night to throw back some beers and watch "Entourage."

This is such a stupid and pointless article. It gives no evidence on how Federer has "distanced" himself. Where is this "noticeable chill" between the two? How does the writer even know they don't text eachother anymore?

He doesn't.

Apparantly lack of information mixed with false information or innuendo is considered suitable material for an SI article.

There is nothing interesting about he article as it contains no real information, except about Fed's and Tiger's careers have declined.

For the record whenever Fed has been asked about Tiger he's said Tiger has his support and is still a friend.

This is a shinning example of how the Public Relations game is tought in text book form. I think the Barrack Obama/Jeremiah Wright example of distancing ones self from the public "rotten apple" is very comprehensive. It really doesn't matter if Roger and Tiger were ever friends... the fact is: Roger will never be able to associate himself with Tiger again because the cloud over Tiger will affect the public perception of their friendship... and this will certainly not be allowed by the Roger camp (these PR mistakes cost too much :) )

Where to begin with this speculative, insubstantial reporting??

The claim that Fed has a robotic public personality is plain wrong, he puts a lot of himself out there in interviews and even sometimes on court.

BTW Fed was interviewed by some kids at Cincy '10 and asked who was the most famous celeb who's number he had on his cell, and Fed immediately anwered "Tiger Woods."

Some distancing.

It's concievable that players who don't even get along still belong in the same social ranks and are privy to one anothers phone number... this only implies that they are able to reach each other, for any reason. This doesn't mean that they collaborate for chick getting adventures. You definately won't see Roger and Tiger out together for a football game or an opening of a trendy club.

It was always Nike cross marketing. Did you notice how many times during Wimby they mentioned Nadal and that golfer rory watshisname becoming friends? I dont follow golf at all and yet I know there is some golfer named Rory.

I don't think they were ever "friends." Just some Nike-pushed fake relationship.
I wouldn't say it was fake relationship because neither of them ever claimed to be best of friends, whether it was Nike-forged or not. Their contact was always mostly about texting, e-mails and maybe occasional meeting but this article or rather the copy-paste of the garbage Jon Wertheim wrote doesn't exactly talk about anything ground-breaking. The headline would make it seem that the two had a fallout of sorts. The main body on the other hand, entirely revolves around assumptions.

My point was that Roger brought up Tiger's name that way many months after the scandal; that contradicts the article's claims that he's been publically distancing himself.

No one really knows the extent of their friendship but themselves, for all we know they might still be exchanging mails and texts, it's just too much assumption.

Yes and from what I know, Roger went to watch Tiger only once and vice-versa with Tiger coming for the USO '06 finals. Hardly something they were doing regularly which again is in contrast to what the article claims. Again, superfluous exaggeration best known to media outfits these days.

lol, poor federer. seems to be some doubt about him.

Or, that the writer has never talked to, spent time with, or even met Roger, and has been mentioned, the article is full of pure speculation and rumour mongering. Perhaps this writer spends too much time watching tabloid television.

To me that whole relationship seemed like a PR thing put together by their mutual sponsor Nike. It was good Nike marketing for the two best in their respective sport to hang out.
Who knows if they were ever really friends or not or to what extent their friendship went and if they are currently still friendly. If I were Roger I would distance myself from that imbecile Tiger too.

As to the posters on this thread who suggest maybe Roger is not as pure as he seems, who knows. Most world class athletes are not exactly angels in that area. Nothing would surprise me if it came out down the road. In fact with superstar athletes I sort of expect it almost. Nobody could be dumber and as careless as Tiger was. He was just asking to get caught.

The thing is, if you're Roger Federer, it would be extremely difficult to cheat and get away with it for long. In today's environment, a hooker could turn a $300 quickie into a $50,000 expose' in the National Enquirer easily.

Reading an article about Mrs. Federer, it seems she is extremely supportive of her husband, tends to his needs while taking care of the kids. Not a lot of reason to cheat IMO. Plus Roger doesn't seem the sketchy sort, and he's had to sit up and take notice of what happened to Tiger.

Nothing like a good reliable friend, fits his personality anyways LOL

Yeah, last time Roger was asked about Tiger he said, "He's still a good friend of mine and it doesn't matter what happened . . . I really hope he gets back to winning ways . . . It would be wonderful to see him dominate the game of golf again."

I'm sure Tiger was crying about those distant, non-supportive statements.

Then he should have 100% no problem showing up to an event right?

You ever wonder who wrote that article? it's Chris Chase. i read alot of people think he writes useless articles on Yahoo.

So here is the question: Did Fed and/or Woods show Chris Chase their monthly text logs? is that how Mr Chase found out about the chilly relationship between the 2 men?

Were they prostitutes? Are you sure?
I had no idea this subject was in debate. I haven't followed the Tiger Woods story closely, but the impression I had was that at least some of the women were call girls. Certainly, based on photos, I'd wager none of them were accountants.

Are you kidding, the whole Tiger thing must have scared the sh-t out of Roger!

I agree with you that in this day and age with all of the technology it would be more difficult to cheat and get away with it, but I am sure there are ways to do it. Tiger could not have been more stupid and careless. If you are a famous person maybe the higher ups in the agency and sponsors that you deal with can get companionship for you. Often confidentiality agreements are signed, etc. I am just saying if a famous person who is smart wants to cheat there are ways to be careful about it.

Hopefully we won't read about any scandal concerning Roger down the road either because he does not cheat or if he does he is cautious about it.

You got that right. The women Tiger was with were prostitutes (or as close to prostitues as one can get) and basically low class women. It was a waitress who worked in a diner that was the one who was the main person responsible for his downfall according to this program I watched on the whole Tiger Woods scenario.

What's the big deal with Tiger Woods' private life? It's his own personal business. What I don't like are these companies pushing sportspeople forward as the "perfect role model with wife and kids" etc when it's a completely fake image. I'd rather sportspeople be themselves.

This is a paraphrased conversation between an editor and a writer. It is not actualy transcribed, but it is a composite of many similar conversations.

Editor/manager] Hey so, I need you to write 500 to 1000 words on a tennis player distancing himself from Tiger Woods.

Writer] Who Federer? More Federer/Woods stuff?

Editor] Yes.

writer] Aww man. Okay. Do you have details? ANything real?

Editor] Yeah, I'll email you what the Nike guys sent me...plus the stuff from the past. And mention Elin Nordegren and the Federer family have been seen together of late.

Writer] Okey. But, you know I can do much more than this kind of story, right? This is basically a crap story based upon a planted story about a PR friendship.

Editor] It's called follow-through. Look it up.

Writer] Okay, but you owe me.

Editor] My inbox by Wednesday morning, early, so we can massage it and put it out nice and edgy like by Wednesday night.

Exactly. Why people think such articles are "interesting" is beyond me. But, I guess, the tabloid industry is proof that there are suckers amongst us. :(

Rather pathetic article, really. The tabloid industry seems to be eating up other suppossedly more serious publications...

Don't think Mirka would appreciate Federer hanging out with Tiger after all the sex scandals...
