Roger Federer Feels He Plays Better Now Than When Was...

These threads only remind me that people here don't watch matches.

A day or two ago @MichaelNadal posted a 2013 Nadal video and I was baffled to see his movement and FH. Don't think he explodes into his shots like he used to then.

Two three months ago I watched 2015 and 2007 WB F side by side, I think I made a thread here about it as well. 2015 Federer was a level below 2007.

From Federer perspective, it's about both marketing and Self motivation. If a athelete keeps saying he played better before and not now, how would he believe he can won again?
So he is a liar?

So he is a liar?
Yes as much a liar as a young Djokovic saying playing Rafael on RG was easy and he was in control of their match despite being 0-2 down(spoiler he will get smacked around for next 5 matches they have there).

Atheletes if they stop believing that they are ready to win/do the impossible, they won't remain competitive

How can someone say oh I used to play ten times better a decade ago, and still have the positive attitude to win titles and Matches.

A still competitive athelete will never admit to himself that he lacks something that might stop him from winning

Maybe he simply adapted his game to the new style, while Rafa and Djoker had 6 year head starts.
Thus means Fed was greatest in his era and then completely changed his game to be second or third in another era.

Man he is good.
Lol, you must be some politician... Rafa and Novak had 6 years head start? Heard this first time man, it's opposite man... Fed had to adapt his game because they were first real opposition he played, not some pigeons... And he failed, because overally he was destroyed in this matchups... He continued to dominate others, so it proves nothing is wrong with his style, but Rafole are just better players...

Who the eff cares

They broke the sport and nothing even matters anymore

The only comments for the next 50 years are going to be closed tennis titles this and that.

Roger should be glad he was the last greatest champion before statist shutdowns.

Thats all there is left to say

In terms of skill, yeah, he has almost 20 years' experience over his 20 y/o version. You could say the same with Nadal and Djokovic too.

The problem is that tennis is a physical sport and no amount of improved skills can adequately compensate for clearly declined athleticism that comes with age.

So anyone wishing to use this as ammo to push some sort of baffling agenda that this is some iteration of Peak Federer(TM) who's been lingering around the tour like a stale fart in a broken lift in need of maintenance these past few years, is better off moving onto watching something like competitive checkers.

Young Djok was an inexperienced kid in the big western world of lies and deceit while 40 yo Fedr isn't a kid but (as many claim) the GOAT. And a liar!
But 40 year old Federer is an old man with his best behind him with expectations of the biggest casual tennis fanbase on his back. You expect him to grin and accept that?He is no GOAT.

Just like a young Djokovic would say he was in control to not appear overwhelmed, an old Federer would stuff like this to himself and others to convince that he still belongs on the final sunday with the trophy.

I think you plainly get what I am saying and you yourself agree to an extent.

There was no need to make a comparison with Djok in your initial answer to me. It is called deflection. What you should have done instead is argue the statement made by Fedr ONLY. Focus on Fedr's words and reasons why is he saying something like that instead of throwing in Djok immediately for obvious reasons. I do get what you are saying but it does not diminish the fact Fedr uses lies to create a certain perception for pure marketing reasons. Especially if someone considers him the GOAT. (I do not and never will).

What? That was simply the art of using another example to illustrate the point. It's common, normal and not a problem. It broadens the point beyond the single data source and helps to show a consistent behavioural pattern.

Yeaaaah. From all of other examples you coincidentally have pulled Djok's name out of nowhere. Gimme a break, will ya?

Well, he wasn't particularly near his peak aged 20, so this isn't too controversial a statement.
Fed at 20 was basically top 10-20 player, which is perhaps where Fed is now but it's unclear. So no not super controversial but Fed always neglects to talk about what's he's lost in these statements (which is understandable), such as his youthful athleticism and explosiveness.

Yeah but no, yeah?

We all know what Fedr meant by saying 20 y.o. don't we?

The Swiss star spoke about how his game changed had over the past two decades. He said, “I’m a more balanced player. Over time I have been able to adjust the details in my style of play, my footwork and the technology of my rackets that make me able to play better now than when I was 20 years old.”

To those who want to be picky to wiggle their way out (for Fedr) one more time - over the past two decades!

Destroyed in matchups? Your boy tied old man Fed even though Fed dominated him at WC19. He crushed Djoker at ATP finals and has not lost to Rafa off clay in 6 years.

This is all after he evolved his game to match the evolution of tennis.

Man Fed is spectacular.

Anyone else realize that if Fed is 40 and still able to compete at the ATP level, maybe someone like me, at 26, could pick up tennis and by 37, you know if the stars align, have.... a chance?

The elephant in the room is that Nadal was also past his physical prime and things were evened out, while Djokovic was at his peak (except Wimbledon 2019) and his best surfaces are hard and grass, unlike in Nadal's case. So, there you have it why the Fedal and Fedovic rivalries have taken different directions in the last 6 years or so.

my cable provider has 5 sports channels, none of them is bothering to show live clay matches so far this year

i have no hope that they will bother to show french open 2021 at all

one of them however braod casted live AO this year and it is showing replay of old grand slam matches but still no live clay series tournaments

You are telling me age isn't that important but other things you mentioned?
Well, we agree... That's what am telling... ;)

There are multiple factors.Add Djokovic's superior mental strenght if you want because their slam h2h has also been decided by a couple of points.3 match points going on the other side and Fed, in theory, would be leading the rivalry now.

Agree, there are many factors, but Fed fan(atics) often say just age, lol... I must react to that nonsense...

Someone who hasn't played competitive sports cannot understand this psychology. Even if you are down 0-40 in a returning game, the player believes he can win the game even if the odds are stacked against him. If the player in question is "lying", then he is lying to himself to keep him motivated. Hence the ridiculous statement that Federer plays better now than ever. Players of that calibre are routinely grilled with these questions to induce an error to make headlines in their news website.

Oh so you are using h2h v Nadal when Fed was younger but don't use the same metric with Djoko. We can see the djokofanatic in you when you refuse to divulge the detail that until Dubai 2015, Federer had a winning record against Djoko. So what was Djoko doing until 2015. His prime was supposedly 2011 but got burnt by Fed in RG of all places lol. He had a walkover to prepare for the game and was dreaming of a CYGS as he had developed some steam over Rafa. Why do you still have the Fed photo in your avatar. Your obsession with Fed knows no bounds. Djokovic will never be as famous as Federer. Deal with it 8-B

You are so confused, lol... I count every match...
I say that Fed in later age have better h2h against Nadal, while against Novak (who is about the same age as Nadal) its opposite.
So, age is not the crucial factor of their h2h dynamics, and age is just an excuse...

Lol at being famous argument...

Actually it is, Djoker was not relevant when Rafa started winning slams. Hence why his level fell off a bit quicker.

Call me when Djoker gets beat by someone great younger than him... Oh wait, younger great players don't exist.

But I would give it my best shot. 110%. Honestly, I really don’t think there is any way I don’t make it. Just my opinion. But enough about me. Who else is gonna try and make it now that Fed has cleared our lane?

If age is not an excuse, then Evans beating Djoko in straight sets means that Evans is an ATG. Since h2h matters a lot to you, what was novak's excuse for having a losing record against Roger till 2015. Admit it you have an unhealthy obsession with Roger. You can type lol all you want but Roger's popularity eats at your being. Get help

Yeah that too. Winning in W19 with tiebreaks is not destruction. This guy must be a teenager or he still has that mentality

Fed couldn't turn around the Djokovic match-up after 2016 (when Nole's prime ended) because Nole made sure to dodge a resurgent Fed in 2017 and finally met Fed again in a low period of the latter's in late 2018.
